Kempsville beat Midlothian 2-0 on June 12 in the VHSL Class 5 girls soccer state semifinal at John Champe High School in Aldie. Maddie Udoh and Bella Delacruz scored, and Morgan Fentner kept a clean sheet in the heat. The win booked Saturday against Kellam, a Beach District rival that had already shut the Chiefs out three times.

Kellam then won 3-0 on June 13 at 1 p.m. on the same field, finished 23-0, and took the Class 5 title. Midlothian’s season ended at 16-4-2. Kempsville closed 17-5, with four of those five losses coming to the Knights.

Kempsville Blanks Midlothian 2-0 at John Champe

The Chiefs entered Friday at 16-4. Midlothian came in at 16-3-2, ranked No. 19 in Virginia on MaxPreps, six spots ahead of Kempsville’s No. 24. The Trojans had allowed 13 goals in 21 games. Kempsville had allowed 18 in 20, while scoring 89 to Midlothian’s 70.

None of that showed on the scoreboard in Loudoun County. Udoh finished a second-half chance. Delacruz, wearing No. 14, put away the other. Jayla Teasley, the No. 8 forward, drew the one assist logged in the 2-0 box score from John Champe. Fentner’s shutout was the Chiefs’ answer to a Trojan side that had averaged 3.3 goals a game.

Midlothian still had a late corner. It did not change the 0-0, 0-2 line. Lila Prisco, a sophomore forward in the No. 8 shirt, and Alexandra Miller spent the afternoon chasing Udoh. Freshman Briella Ansell, who had headed in the Region 5C semifinal winner against James River, ran into Savannah Lambert. The heat sat on the Spring Jubilee site the whole match.

Marc Davis, sports director at WTKR News 3, put the next step in one line after the whistle.

Meanwhile, in girls soccer, Kempsville tops Midlothian, 2-0. The Chiefs will face Kellam in an all-757 state title game tomorrow.

Who Scored When Kempsville Beat Midlothian?

Udoh and Delacruz scored one each, Teasley had the assist, and Fentner posted the shutout in a 2-0 Class 5 state semifinal on June 12 at John Champe. Udoh’s goal came in the second half. MaxPreps logged two goals and one assist, with the second finish unassisted in the file.

THE CHIEFS WHO FINISHED FRIDAY

  • Maddie Udoh: Scored once in the second half after a two-goal night in the 6-1 quarterfinal at Todd Stadium.
  • Bella Delacruz: No. 14, one goal and two points in the box, the other name on the 2-0.
  • Jayla Teasley: No. 8, the assist on June 12, 35 goals for the spring, and a hat trick in the 6-1 win over Menchville on June 9.
  • Morgan Fentner: Goalkeeper, clean sheet against a team that had scored 70 times before Friday.

Teasley, Kegan Cartwright, and Lambert later made the Class 5 first team as juniors. Cartwright, a midfielder with 6 assists in the MaxPreps leaders file, had scored in that 6-1 quarterfinal alongside Teasley’s three and Udoh’s two. Menchville’s only goal came from Maddie Leach.

Kempsville’s scoring average of 4.5 did not show up as a flood on Friday. Two were enough. Midlothian never found the 3.3 it had been putting up.

Midlothian’s June Path Ends in Loudoun County

The Trojans were Region 5C runners-up. They beat James River 1-0 on June 2 on Ansell’s header from an Alex Bullis corner, then lost 0-1 to Mills Godwin on June 5 in the region final. A 3-2 state quarterfinal win over Briar Woods on June 9 put them on the Aldie field. The numbers that framed a Class 5 semifinal preview still had Midlothian at 16-3-2, 12-1-1 in region play, with a.810 win rate once ties counted as half.

THE JUNE BRACKET TO ALDIE

  1. June 2, 2026: Midlothian beats James River 1-0 in the Region 5C semifinals; Kempsville beats Ocean Lakes 6-1 in Region A.
  2. June 5, 2026: Godwin beats Midlothian 1-0 for the Region 5C title; Kellam beats Kempsville 2-0 for the Region A title, 1-1 by half at Kempsville High.
  3. June 9, 2026: Midlothian beats Briar Woods 3-2 in the state quarterfinals; Kempsville beats Menchville 6-1 at Todd Stadium.
  4. June 12, 2026: Kempsville beats Midlothian 2-0 at John Champe; Kellam beats Godwin 5-2 in the other Class 5 semi.
  5. June 13, 2026: Kellam beats Kempsville 3-0 in the Class 5 final at 1 p.m. at John Champe.

The VHSL girls soccer postseason schedule had the Midlothian-Kempsville semi in the Friday afternoon window at Aldie, with the title game the next day on the same grass. Midlothian’s last four went 1-0, 0-1, 3-2, 0-2. Two of those three losses were 1-0 or 2-0 games in which the Trojans never scored. The Deep Run 4-0 on May 20 was the other blowout on the ledger, a non-region night that did not follow them into June.

National rank 240 and a 9-0-1 road mark did not travel to Loudoun. After Friday, Midlothian sat 16-4-2. Region record stayed 12-1-1, second in 5C.

The Friday Win Lined Up Kellam at 1 p.m.

Kempsville’s reward was not a new opponent. It was Kellam, 22-0 when Friday ended and 23-0 when Saturday ended, ranked No. 2 in Virginia and No. 15 in the country. The Knights had already beaten the Chiefs on April 20 (2-0), May 15 (3-0), and June 5 (2-0). Saturday made it four, all blanks, 10-0 on the year.

KEMPSVILLE VS KELLAM IN 2026

Date Round Score Site
April 20 Beach District Kellam 2-0 Kempsville
May 15 Beach District Kellam 3-0 Kellam
June 5 Class 5 Region A final Kellam 2-0 Kempsville High
June 13 Class 5 state final Kellam 3-0 John Champe, Aldie

Four of Kempsville’s five losses came in that column. The Chiefs scored 91 times in the spring once Udoh and Delacruz had finished Friday, and zero of those 91 landed on Kellam. The school post on June 12 called it an all-Virginia Beach state championship showdown at 1 p.m. in Loudoun County. It was also a fourth look at a team that had not conceded to them in district, region, or state play.

Kellam’s other semi was a 5-2 win over Godwin, the same Eagles who had edged Midlothian 1-0 in Region 5C. Class 5 funneled two Beach District sides and two Richmond-area sides into one Aldie gymnasium hallway, then sent the two Beach sides through. The VHSL soccer state brackets listed John Champe as the Class 5 girls site for both the semis and the final.

Kellam Finishes 23-0 on a Fourth Shutout

Gabriella Stewart and Adelyn Breaux scored in the second half of the 3-0 final. Kellam had 110 goals scored and 5 allowed across 23 games, with a 15-0 home mark, 7-0 away, and 1-0 on a neutral field. The Knights turned a 2025 overtime loss in the state final into a second title in three seasons.

CLASS 5 TITLE WEEKEND

  • Kellam: 23-0, 110 goals for, 5 against, No. 15 nationally, No. 2 in Virginia, Class 5 champion.
  • Kempsville: 17-5, state runner-up, 9-3 in region play, first state tournament in almost two decades.
  • Midlothian: 16-4-2, state semifinalist, 12-1-1 and second in Region 5C.

Floyd Kellam’s boys also won Class 5 that day, 3-2 over Lightridge at John Champe, so the same school left Aldie with both soccer trophies. Independence took Class 6 girls. Atlee took Class 4 girls. The Spring Jubilee spread those finals across Loudoun and beyond; Class 5 girls stayed in Aldie from Friday’s 5-2 and 2-0 semis through Saturday’s 3-0.

Kempsville had no answer for a group that had already posted 2-0, 3-0, and 2-0 against it. The 3-0 on June 13 was the same game in a new round. Fentner’s shutout on Friday did not carry 24 hours. Udoh’s second-half finish did not get a sequel.

Camryn Terry’s First State Final in Almost Two Decades

Camryn Terry was named VHSL Class 5 Coach of the Year after the 17-5 runner-up finish. The Chiefs are 37-15-2 in three years under her, and the 2026 trip was the program’s first state tournament in almost two decades. MaxPreps lists her as C. Terry, head coach, with A. Hanger as statistician. M. McCall entered the 2-0 final.

KEMPSVILLE’S CLASS 5 FIRST TEAM

  • Jayla Teasley: Junior forward, 35 goals, hat trick in the 6-1 quarterfinal, assist in the 2-0 semi, All-Class first team.
  • Kegan Cartwright: Junior midfielder, 6 assists in the leaders file, a goal against Menchville, first team.
  • Savannah Lambert: Junior defender, first team, on Ansell in the semi and on the back line that held Midlothian to zero.

Mills Godwin senior central midfielder London Serafim was Class 5 Player of the Year after the Region C title and the state semi. Kellam placed Raegan Thompson, Mayson Ritchie, Breaux, and goalkeeper Molly Beaudin on the first team. Menchville’s Leach made it too. The June 29 honors closed a spring in which Kempsville’s only state final was also its fourth blank against the same neighbor.

Both Friday sides finished at.773 once the math caught up, Midlothian at 16-4-2 and Kempsville at 17-5. The difference was one more June date in Aldie, and the identity of the team that date was against.

Frequently Asked Questions

Other 2026 girls finals sat at Independence in Ashburn (Class 6), Woodgrove in Purcellville (Class 4), Emory and Henry (Class 3), and Roanoke College (Class 2).

Who Was VHSL Class 5 Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2026?

Mills Godwin senior central midfielder London Serafim was named Class 5 Player of the Year after she led the Eagles to the Region 5C championship and a state semifinal, where Kellam beat Godwin 5-2 on June 12 at John Champe.

How Does VHSL Assign Home Teams in Soccer State Brackets?

MaxPreps, the official brackets provider for the VHSL, lists the top of each bracket as the home team, and it flips that tag to the region champion when a region runner-up sits in the top slot against a region champion. Quarterfinals are local; semifinals and finals move to the Spring Jubilee sites.

On June 29 the league named Terry coach of the year and put three Kempsville juniors on the Class 5 first team. Those juniors still have another spring. Kellam’s 23-0 file does not.
