WhatsApp Web’s Free Calling Update Takes Aim at Zoom
WhatsApp Web now hosts free, unlimited group video calls with Waiting Rooms and screen sharing, undercutting Zoom’s 40 minute and Meet’s 60 minute free limits.
WhatsApp Web can now run full audio and video calls without installing any desktop app, Meta’s messaging unit said Tuesday, adding call transfer between devices, a Zoom style waiting room for group call links, and video that reaches HD quality within seconds of connecting instead of ramping up gradually. The update also brings screen sharing, in call reactions and a dedicated Calls tab to the browser version for the first time.
It costs nothing extra and carries no time limit. That combination, free group video calls with no clock running, lands directly on ground Zoom and Google Meet have spent years fencing off with free tier limits of their own.
What’s New in the WhatsApp Web Calling Update
WhatsApp confirmed the rollout in a company blog post on Tuesday: browser calling brings features that already worked on mobile and the standalone desktop app to web.whatsapp.com for the first time. Calls made this way stay end to end encrypted, WhatsApp says, with no time limit and no additional cost.
The headline addition is Call Transfer. It lets someone move an ongoing group call between devices without hanging up first. WhatsApp’s own example: a call started on a phone while traveling can be handed to the browser or desktop app once the user gets home, then handed back to the phone when they need to step away. WhatsApp says the feature lets people swap active calls between phone, tablet and browser without hanging up or rejoining the room.
Waiting Room works through call links. Anyone creating a link can turn on a Require approval to join option; participants who open the link then sit in a virtual lobby until the host lets them in, the same gatekeeping model Zoom built its reputation on for large meetings years ago. QuickHD targets the first few seconds of a call, when video traditionally starts blurry and sharpens gradually; WhatsApp says the update pushes calls to HD resolution from the opening frame instead. A separate Noise Suppression feature filters background sound, aimed at people calling from noisy rooms, cafes or open offices.
Screen sharing, in call reactions and a dedicated Calls tab showing call history and favorite contacts round out the update. All three already existed on mobile; the browser was the one place still missing them.
| Feature | What It Does | Previously Available On |
|---|---|---|
| Call Transfer | Moves an active group call between phone, tablet, desktop app and browser without disconnecting | Not previously available on any device |
| Waiting Room | Places call link participants in a lobby until the host approves entry | New across every WhatsApp platform |
| QuickHD | Delivers HD video from the first seconds of a call instead of ramping up gradually | New across every WhatsApp platform |
| Noise Suppression | Filters background sound to isolate a caller’s voice | New across every WhatsApp platform |
| Screen Sharing and Reactions | Lets callers share a screen or send live reactions mid call | Mobile app |
| Calls Tab | Shows call history and favorite contacts in one place | Mobile and desktop app |
The common thread is that web.whatsapp.com no longer trails the rest of the app. Five of those six additions had already shipped somewhere else in WhatsApp before Tuesday; only Call Transfer and Waiting Room are new everywhere at once, browser included.
Built on a 2023 Foundation
Browser calling did not appear out of nowhere. In March 2023, WhatsApp rebuilt its Windows client and added faster, improved calling built for the desktop app, along with multi device sync that let an account keep working even when the linked phone was switched off. That update also raised desktop group calls to eight participants on video and 32 on voice, matching the mobile app’s limits at the time.
That multi device system is what makes Tuesday’s update possible. A browser tab has no SIM card and no persistent connection of its own; it has to lean on the same account level infrastructure the 2023 desktop rebuild introduced. Three years later, WhatsApp is extending that plumbing to the one client that never got it: a plain browser tab, nothing installed.
Where WhatsApp Web Calling Squeezes Zoom and Meet
Zoom’s free Basic plan still cuts group meetings off at 40 minutes. Google Meet’s free tier stops group calls at 60 minutes and warns users five minutes before the cutoff. WhatsApp calls, on desktop, mobile or now the open web, carry no such limit and no paid tier required to remove one.
WhatsApp is not chasing Zoom’s webinar tools or Meet’s calendar integration, and its group call caps still sit below what either rival offers on a paid plan. But for an everyday group call, a family catch up that runs long, a study group that loses track of time, a small business call that turns into a longer negotiation, WhatsApp Web now removes the one constraint both rivals still charge to fix: the clock.
Meta is not shy about the scale behind that offer. The company has said WhatsApp counts more than 3 billion monthly users worldwide, a base neither Zoom nor Google Meet can match for a free, no download option.
Who Gains the Most From Skipping the Install?
Anyone on a computer they do not fully control benefits most: a work laptop locked down by IT, a shared library terminal, a college computer lab, or a relative’s PC during a visit. Those devices often block new software installs outright, which used to mean WhatsApp calls were simply off the table on desktop, no matter how good the connection was.
- Shared or public computers, library terminals and internet cafes, where installing software is not allowed or not practical
- Locked down work laptops managed by corporate IT, where new app approvals can take weeks
- Chromebooks and other lightweight devices that cannot run WhatsApp’s native desktop client at all
- Small businesses and freelancers who want a free video call option without adding another app to every teammate’s machine
That last group sits inside a bigger shift already underway at WhatsApp, which has spent July pushing further into paid business tools alongside the free consumer features.
A Pattern of Fast, Overlapping Feature Drops
Tuesday’s calling update is the latest in a run of WhatsApp releases packed into a single month. In the same stretch, WhatsApp shipped a dedicated Android Auto and CarPlay app for hands free messaging in cars, and expanded its business focused AI agent’s rollout in India with a new usage based pricing meter. Rounded message bubbles landed on iOS. A revamped CarPlay experience with in chat PDF editing arrived days before that. Two step verification is reportedly being tested as a full password.
That cadence is a change on its own. WhatsApp used to ship a headline feature once or twice a quarter. This month it shipped several, calling included, in the space of a few weeks.
What We Know, What’s Still Unconfirmed
WhatsApp said the new calling features are rolling out gradually and will reach all users soon, without giving a completion date or a region by region schedule.
What We Know
- WhatsApp Web calling is free, end to end encrypted and has no time limit, matching the rest of the app
- Call Transfer moves a live group call between phone, tablet, desktop app and browser without disconnecting
- Waiting Room, QuickHD and Noise Suppression are new to every WhatsApp platform, not just the browser
What’s Still Unconfirmed
- Whether browser calls carry the same eight video, 32 voice participant caps set with the 2023 desktop update
- An exact date for full global availability, beyond WhatsApp’s own gradual rollout language
- Which browsers and operating systems receive the feature first
For now, the rollout is limited and widening by the week. WhatsApp says every user will get it soon; until then, the fastest way to check is opening web.whatsapp.com and looking for the new Calls tab.
