Samsung’s Brighter Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Launches Amid a Shipment Slide

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 adds 5,000 nits of brightness and a bigger battery, launching as Counterpoint data show Samsung’s smartwatch shipments sliding against Apple.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 went official at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, and the number doing the talking is 5,000. That is the peak brightness, in nits, of its new display, up from the 3,000 nits on both its own predecessor and Apple’s rival Ultra watch. A bigger battery, a new Qualcomm chip and a thinner titanium case round out the pitch.

None of that arrives in a vacuum. Counterpoint Research’s most recent tracker shows Samsung’s global smartwatch shipments falling sharply even as Apple’s grew, which means Samsung is making its loudest hardware statement in years from a weaker market position than it has held in more than a decade.

A Screen Built to Beat Direct Sunlight

The headline spec is legibility. Samsung’s own announcement describes the Ultra2 as built for demanding outdoor use, with an 800 mAh battery, the new chipset and a 5,000 nit display designed to stay readable in harsh, direct light. That is the exact complaint hands on impressions have flagged for years: older watches wash out in full sun and force users to shield the screen with a hand to read it.

The case itself changed too. The 47mm titanium shell is 12 percent thinner than the original Ultra, with a case depth of 10.7mm and a weight of 61.5 grams without the strap, according to specs confirmed at launch. Inside sits Qualcomm’s new 3nm Snapdragon Wear Elite platform (model SDW6100), replacing the Exynos W1000 chip that powered the first two years of the Ultra line.

Pricing moved too, though modestly. The LTE model lists at $699 in the US, about $50 above the 2024 original’s $649 launch price. Preorders opened alongside the announcement, with general retail availability set for August 7.

Spec Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) Galaxy Watch Ultra2 (2026) Apple Watch Ultra 3
Peak brightness 3,000 nits 5,000 nits 3,000 nits
Battery 590 mAh 800 mAh Up to 42 hours (72 in Low Power Mode)
Chipset Exynos W1000 Snapdragon Wear Elite Apple S10
Case size 47mm titanium 47mm titanium, 12% thinner 49mm titanium
US launch price $649 $699 $799

Read plainly, Samsung wins on brightness and undercuts Apple by $100 on price. Apple still leads on stated battery endurance and case size, though mAh and hours are not directly comparable measurements, so the real world gap will need independent testing to settle.

Samsung Health Adds an FDA-Cleared Feature

The other half of Samsung’s pitch is software. The company says its updated Samsung Health app centralizes daily metrics in ways that are meant to be faster to read and act on, addressing a common complaint that Samsung’s health data was scattered across too many screens.

  • Vitals – a single daily snapshot pulling together core health metrics.
  • Heart Health Score – one number meant to summarize cardiovascular condition at a glance.
  • Fitness Index and Daily Cardio Load – training metrics tracking exertion over time rather than a single workout.
  • FDA-authorized Sleep Apnea detection – a clinically cleared feature carried over into the refreshed Health suite.

The Ultra2 also gets two features tailored to its rugged positioning: Trail Run tracking for elevation and terrain impact, and a Nutrition Alert upgrade that calculates hydration recommendations from sweat loss during longer sessions. A deeper diving app co-developed with the equipment brand Mares is coming later this year, adding real time ascent and descent rates plus safety decompression time on top of the watch’s automatic dive detection to 40 meters.

The Battery Complaint That Took Two Years to Fix

Context matters here. The original Galaxy Watch Ultra launched in 2024 to real enthusiasm, but one complaint stuck: battery life. A day of real world use from a $649 watch felt thin next to Garmin devices lasting two weeks at similar prices. Notebookcheck and SamMobile reported ahead of this launch that last year’s Ultra refresh kept the same 590 mAh cell and the same Exynos W1000 chip as the 2024 original, a repeat that PhoneArena said struggled to justify its own existence.

Samsung used the same London keynote to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, the foldable half of Samsung’s two-phone bet against Apple entering its next generation alongside the watches.

Apple has not been immune to the same slow cadence. Reviewing the Apple Watch Ultra 3 last year, AppleInsider called it the line’s first true update in two years, meaning both companies let their flagship rugged watch sit largely unchanged for a full product cycle before making a real move. The difference is what happened to each company’s sales while they waited.

Counterpoint’s Numbers Complicate the Pitch

This is where the spec sheet runs into the market. Counterpoint Research’s tracker for the first quarter of 2026 shows Apple’s global smartwatch shipment share climbing to 23 percent, up from 20 percent a year earlier, while Samsung posted the steepest decline of any major vendor.

  • 23% – Apple’s global smartwatch shipment share in Q1 2026, up from 20% in Q1 2025, per Counterpoint Research.
  • 28% – the year over year drop in Samsung’s smartwatch shipments over the same quarter.
  • 5th place – Samsung’s rank among global smartwatch vendors in Q1 2026, with roughly 5% share.
  • 17% – Huawei’s share in second place, more than triple Samsung’s.

Apple’s unit growth ran at 21 percent year over year in the quarter, the fastest of any top ten brand, driven by the Apple Watch Series 11 and the budget SE 3. For full year 2025, Counterpoint had Samsung roughly tied with the children’s watch brand Imoo at around 7 percent share each, behind Huawei’s 17 percent and Xiaomi’s 9 percent. Falling from there to 5th place in a single quarter is a steep drop for a company that used to run second to Apple worldwide.

What the Spec Sheet Leaves Out

No Satellite, No Rotating Bezel

Two features that pre-launch leaks floated for the Ultra2 did not show up on stage. A rotating physical bezel, a fan request since Samsung dropped it from the line, remains absent. So does satellite messaging, a feature Apple has offered on its own Ultra since 2022 and expanded with stronger antennas on the Ultra 3. For now, off grid emergency messaging stays an Apple exclusive between these two watches.

Apple’s Clinical Backing

Apple also carries a data point Samsung cannot yet match: independent clinical validation. A meta-analysis published in JACC: Advances in January 2025 measured Apple Watch ECG performance at 94.8 percent sensitivity and 95 percent specificity across 4,241 participants. Samsung’s FDA authorization for sleep apnea detection is real and notable, but it has not yet accumulated the same volume of independent, peer reviewed scrutiny across its wider health feature set.

Is Apple Due for a Response?

Apple’s Ultra 3 is nearly a year old and its next update is not expected until Apple’s usual September slot, with analysts at MacRumors cautioning it may bring only minor changes. That timing means Samsung’s brighter, cheaper watch gets roughly six weeks on shelves before Apple gets a chance to answer directly.

The Ultra 3 already has a two year old design behind it, a 49mm titanium case, an LTPO3 display capped at 3,000 nits, and Apple’s S10 chip. It starts at $799 and Apple advertises up to 42 hours of normal use, stretching to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Whatever Apple ships next will be the first watch built specifically to answer 5,000 nits rather than react to a rumor of it.

Apple’s next Ultra is expected around its usual September slot, about six weeks after Samsung’s watch reaches shelves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 work with an iPhone?

No. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch line pairs through the Samsung Health and Wearable apps, which require an Android phone. iPhone owners cannot pair the Ultra2 the way they would an Apple Watch Ultra 3.

What happened to satellite messaging on the Ultra2?

It did not make the final announcement. Rumors before launch suggested Samsung might add satellite connectivity to close the gap with Apple, but the July 22 reveal left it out, along with a rumored rotating bezel.

What band options come with the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?

Samsung refreshed its band lineup alongside the watch, including Marine, PeakForm and Trail bands, each sold separately from the watch itself rather than bundled in the box.

Does the Ultra2 replace the Galaxy Watch 9?

No, they launched as siblings. The Watch9 targets everyday all day wear with a smaller 390 mAh or 445 mAh battery depending on case size and starts around $380, while the Ultra2 targets rugged and diving use starting at $699.

When can you actually buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?

Preorders opened July 22, 2026, the same day as the Unpacked announcement, with general retail availability beginning August 7, 2026 in the US and other launch markets.
