Galaxy Z Flip 8 Launches at $1,199, Samsung’s Smallest Foldable Bet
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 launched exactly as leaked, but confirmed production numbers and a price hike show it’s the company’s lowest-priority foldable of 2026.
Samsung confirmed the Galaxy Z Flip 8 in London on July 22, and almost nothing about it surprised anyone who had spent the summer reading leaks. The phone starts at $1,199, a $100 jump from last year’s model, and ships in Cream, Graphite and Pink. What didn’t leak ahead of time sat inside Samsung’s own supply chain paperwork.
Samsung has now confirmed nearly every detail leakers reported for months, from the regional chipset split to the color names. A supply chain report that surfaced right before the keynote adds a number Samsung never put onstage: the Flip 8 has the smallest production run of the three new foldables the company just launched.
Samsung Confirms the Galaxy Z Flip 8 in London
Samsung’s summer Unpacked event took place in London on July 22, 2026, the setting for a lineup that included the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 alongside the Flip. The Flip 8 starts at $1,199 for the 256GB model, $100 more than the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s $1,099 launch price a year earlier.
Samsung’s own account had teased the date weeks ahead of time in a post confirming the July 22 Unpacked date. Preorders opened the same day as the keynote, with retail availability set for August 7. The price increase mirrors a pattern showing up across the rest of Samsung’s phone lineup this year: Samsung’s midrange Galaxy A27 price jump traces back to the same memory chip shortage now squeezing costs from the budget tier up through the foldables.
Samsung leaned hard on artificial intelligence in its pitch for the new lineup.
As AI becomes more agentic, mobile devices will become the most personal entry point to experiences that understand and adapt to each user.
TM Roh, who leads Samsung’s Device eXperience division, said that in the company’s official announcement of the lineup. The Flip 8’s cover screen, which Samsung calls FlexWindow, now handles more tasks without requiring the phone to open, a feature built around that same AI push.

Samsung’s Own Supply Chain Ranks the Flip Last
Korean outlet ET News reported this month that Samsung set 2026 production targets of roughly 2.8 million panels for the new wide Galaxy Z Fold 8, 2 million for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and 1.5 million for the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The figures were independently corroborated by outlets including GSMArena, 9to5Google and Tom’s Guide in the days before launch.
| Model | 2026 Production Target | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) | ~2.8 million units | $1,899 |
| Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra | ~2 million units | $2,099 |
| Galaxy Z Flip 8 | ~1.5 million units | $1,199 |
Those are panel orders, not finished sales, and Samsung has adjusted production targets mid-cycle before when demand ran hot or cold. Still, the gap is wide. Samsung had originally planned to build the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra in equal numbers before shifting more capacity toward the wider model, according to SamMobile.
Samsung’s total foldable output for the year is expected to land between 5.5 million and 6 million units, roughly flat against the nearly 6 million foldables the company shipped last year behind a strong Galaxy Z Fold 7. The lineup isn’t growing so much as it’s being rearranged. The smallest slice goes to the phone Samsung has released every year since 2020.
What Changed From the Z Flip 7
Samsung’s marketing describes the Flip 8 as thinner and lighter rather than reinvented, and the spec sheet backs that up. Confirmed changes over last year’s model include:
- Thickness – 6.1mm when unfolded, down from 6.5mm on the Z Flip 7
- Weight – 180 grams, with a redesigned hinge built from a new high-strength material
- Chipset – Exynos 2600 on a 2nm process for global markets, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the United States
- Memory – 12GB of RAM with 256GB or 512GB of storage
- Battery – 4,300mAh with 25W wired charging and wireless support
- Cameras – the same 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide sensors as the Z Flip 7, carried over rather than upgraded
Gemini AI support and an expanded FlexWindow round out the software side. Samsung is positioning those additions as this generation’s headline upgrades rather than any change to the phone’s basic shape or camera hardware.
Three Colors Onstage, One Held Back for Samsung.com
The Flip 8 launches in Cream, Graphite and Pink, matching the colorway names that leaked through Android Headlines’ renders weeks before the event. The pink shade reads lighter and more pastel than the Coral Red option Samsung sold on the Z Flip 7.
A fourth color, Mint, is available as a Samsung.com exclusive, following the same online-only pattern the company used with last year’s lineup. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 gets its own exclusive shade, Pistachio, sold the same way.
A Foldable Market That’s Moving Away From Flip Phones
Counterpoint Research, the market intelligence firm, forecasts that global foldable phone shipments will grow 21 percent year over year in 2026, with book-style devices like the Fold driving most of that growth. Samsung is still expected to lead the category this year, but its share of it is shrinking.
- 32%: Samsung’s projected 2026 foldable market share, down from 40 percent in 2025, as Apple enters the category
- 25%: Apple’s projected share in its first year selling a foldable iPhone
- 65%: Share of global foldable shipments expected to come from book-style devices like the Fold, up from 52 percent in 2025
Huawei is projected to slide to 24 percent from 30 percent, while Motorola falls to 8 percent from 12 percent and Honor to 3 percent from 7 percent, according to Counterpoint’s 2026 forecast. Gerrit Schneemann, a Counterpoint analyst who tracks the smartphone market, told CNN Business that Apple’s entry could give the whole category “a little bit of (a) stamp of approval once Apple does it well.”
Samsung’s own two-model bet on the Fold line, splitting a wide model from the Ultra, mirrors a two-phone wager against Apple’s looming foldable iPhone that leakers had flagged months before launch. The wider Fold 8 adopts a shorter, wider redesign with a trimmed camera array, a shape aimed squarely at the passport-sized foldable Apple is rumored to ship in September.
Is the Z Flip 8 Really the Last One?
No one, including Samsung, has confirmed the Galaxy Z Flip line is ending. But two separate leakers have now made close to the same claim months apart, and Samsung’s own production numbers happen to line up with the theory without the company saying a word about it.
The claim originated on X from @fireuniverse8’s post about ending the clamshell lineup, which said Samsung plans to discontinue the Z Flip series to concentrate on the Fold family. Longtime Samsung leaker Ice Universe later posted on X that “the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 is likely to be Samsung’s last small folding product.” SamMobile, which flagged the discontinuation report to its followers, noted that if true, the Flip would become the second major Samsung phone lineup discontinued, after the Galaxy Note.
- What we know: Samsung gave the Flip 8 the smallest 2026 production allocation of its three foldables, and the company has not commented on its product roadmap beyond confirming the July 22 lineup.
- What we know: Samsung has released a new Z Flip every year since 2020, and the Flip 8 arrived on that same annual schedule.
- What’s unconfirmed: Whether Samsung will actually stop building Z Flip phones after this generation, or simply pause the line before a redesigned successor.
- What’s unconfirmed: Exact timing, since the claim echoes an earlier, similarly unverified report from May.
GSMArena, reviewing the same leaks, urged some caution, writing that “we might see a pause of the Flip8 series instead of a full-on discontinuation.” PhoneArena’s coverage, by contrast, treated the Flip 8 as a continuation of an ongoing yearly cadence rather than a farewell entry.
Motorola Is Watching Closely
If Samsung does step back from clamshells, Motorola is the obvious beneficiary. Earlier this year, IDC found Motorola held about half of the U.S. foldable market, competing almost entirely with flip-style phones, before its book-style Razr Fold had even launched.
In North America specifically, Counterpoint put Samsung’s 2025 foldable share at 51 percent with Motorola close behind at 44 percent, a gap driven largely by the Razr lineup. Abhinav Anand, SammyGuru’s news editor, put it plainly in an analysis of the rumors.
“Ironically, Motorola seems more committed to the clamshell form factor today than Samsung does,” Anand wrote.
Even Motorola isn’t fully committed to one shape anymore. Its Razr Fold, a book-style device the company introduced this year, shows the rival benefiting most from a Samsung retreat is already hedging toward the format Samsung just built 2.8 million panels around.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Does the Galaxy Z Flip 8 Ship, and What Comes With Preordering?
Retail availability begins August 7, 2026, though preorders opened the same day as the July 22 keynote through Samsung.com, Samsung retail stores, Amazon, Best Buy and carriers including T-Mobile and Verizon. Preorder perks include trade-in credit worth up to $600 or a flat $200 Samsung credit for buyers skipping a trade-in, plus bundled trials for services like Google AI Pro and Adobe Lightroom.
Will There Be a Galaxy Z Flip 8 FE?
No FE model appears likely this year. Android Central reported in June that no Flip 8 FE model number showed up in any regulatory certification database, unlike the standard Flip 8 and both Fold 8 models, which had already cleared filings.
Does the Z Flip 8 Get the Same Hinge Tech as the Fold 8?
Not entirely. Samsung’s own materials describe a stronger hinge built from a new high-strength material and a thinner closed profile, but at least one supply chain report circulating before launch suggested the Flip wouldn’t receive the same titanium-reinforced display substrate Samsung built for the Fold lineup’s crease reduction.
What Does the Galaxy Z Flip 8 Cost Outside the US?
In the United Kingdom, the Flip 8 starts at £1,149, compared with £1,699 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and £1,899 for the Fold 8 Ultra. That mirrors the U.S. spread of $1,199, $1,899 and $2,099 across the same three phones.
