Lenovo Prices the IdeaPad Vibe Against Apple’s $699 Neo

Lenovo priced the IdeaPad Vibe at $699.99, matching Apple’s MacBook Neo after a $100 memory-driven hike. The 14-inch and 15-inch Windows laptops were shown at Lenovo Innovation World ahead of IFA, in seven Pantone colors, with AMD or Snapdragon chips.

AMD versions let the owner add RAM later. Snapdragon versions do not. That split is the purchase, once the colors fade.

Lenovo Aimed the Vibe at Apple’s $699 Neo

The Vibe is a 14.9 mm machine that starts at 2.87 pounds (1.3 kg). Apple’s Neo is a 13-inch laptop, 12.7 mm thick (0.50 inch) and 2.7 pounds (1.23 kg), so Lenovo is thicker and a touch heavier at the lightest spec. Plastic and metal lids are both planned. Lenovo has not said which colors or chips get which shell.

Screens run 14-inch or 15-inch, with OLED on some trims and a 120Hz IPS panel on others. Moody Blue and Lowkey Grey get OLED with full DCI-P3 coverage, 1200p on the 14-inch and 2.1K on the 15-inch. The IPS option is listed at 100% sRGB. Touch is optional on the 15-inch size only. A 5MP webcam sits behind a physical privacy cover, with an IR camera for Windows Hello.

Lenovo is selling two computers under one name. AMD Ryzen AI 400 models are due in October 2026. Qualcomm Snapdragon X models follow in November 2026. Both start at $699.99. An Intel version is promised later, with no date.

The Neo still wins on thickness, weight, and a single aluminum body. The Vibe wins on screen size, ports, and a path off the 8GB floor, if you pick the AMD SKU and pay for the RAM.

The Memory Crunch That Reset Cheap Laptops

Apple put the Neo on sale on March 11, 2026 at $599, then raised it to $699 on June 25, 2026. The 512GB model with Touch ID moved to $799. Apple blamed a memory-chip shortage driven by AI data-center demand, and said it had held prices as long as it could.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage. We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly.

TrendForce’s DRAM survey is the number behind that sentence. In the first quarter of 2026, DRAM contract prices jumped 93 to 98 percent quarter over quarter, and industry revenue rose 81 percent to $97 billion. The same note put a further 58 to 63 percent rise on conventional DRAM contracts for the second quarter. PC makers have been shipping 8GB machines again because the chips cost too much to stack higher at the floor price.

Lenovo’s $699.99 tag is not a discount against the old Neo. It is a match against the new one. After August leaks, the live worry was whether a Windows laptop this colorful could print that number at all. The company did. The remaining question is which RAM count wears it.

Why the $699 Config Still Starts at 8GB

Specification sheets that circulated in August listed 8GB and 16GB as single-channel LPDDR5X, then 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB as dual-channel. The 8GB floor is the SKU with a chance of matching Neo money during a RAM crunch. Lenovo has not published a US configurator yet, so the $699.99 laptop you can actually click may land above 8GB, or it may not.

AMD models support up to 32GB, and Lenovo says the owner can upgrade that RAM. Snapdragon models top out at 24GB, and that RAM is not user-upgradable, though storage still is. Both lines offer up to 1TB and a spare SSD slot. Those two facts are easy to mash into one talking point. They are not the same machine.

The August sheets also draw a hard line at 16GB for Microsoft Copilot+ features. Less than 16GB is a regular Windows 11 PC. Anyone who buys 8GB to hit the headline price does not get the Copilot+ stack, which is the AI pitch these chips were built to carry. Ryzen AI 400 chips already in IdeaPad laptops from the CES cycle sit in thicker or more expensive chassis. The Vibe uses the lower rungs of that family, chips such as the Ryzen AI 7 445 and Ryzen AI 5 435, at up to 30W, not the HX parts AMD puts in heavier machines.

A RAM slot only helps if you can open the laptop and find a module later. Lenovo’s published self-repair guides already cover IdeaPad models, which is the documentation buyers will want when the AMD Vibe ships. Snapdragon owners will not get that second chance on memory. They get a soldered board, the way every Neo ships.

HDMI, USB-A, and a microSD Slot Come Standard

Every Vibe layout Lenovo showed carries two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, HDMI 1.4, a microSD reader, and a headphone jack. That is the daily kit a $699 Windows buyer still uses: a flash drive, a monitor cable, a camera card, a charger. Apple’s Neo puts 8GB of unified memory next to two USB-C ports that are not equal. One is USB 3 at 10Gb/s with DisplayPort. The other is USB 2 at 480Mb/s. Both can charge. Only the faster port drives a 4K 60Hz display. There is a headphone jack and no HDMI, no USB-A, and no card reader.

HDMI 1.4 is the cheap version of that win. It is enough for a 4K panel at 30Hz, not 60Hz, so a living-room TV is fine and a sharp monitor is a USB-C job. August sheets also listed those USB-C ports at 5Gb/s with DisplayPort and Power Delivery, which is slower than the Neo’s good port. You still avoid a dongle for the old plugs. You do not get Thunderbolt.

The 65W USB-C adapter is in the box on the AMD sheets, with Rapid Charge Boost rated at 15 minutes for 2 hours of use. AMD 14-inch models get a 50Wh pack. AMD 15-inch models get 65Wh. Snapdragon models keep the 50Wh pack on both sizes. The Neo’s 36.5Wh cell is smaller, and Apple rates it at up to 16 hours of video streaming and 11 hours of wireless web. Lenovo is only saying “all-day” so far. Until the Vibe is in a lab, that is a claim, not a number.

Seven Pantone Colors and Swap-In Keycaps

Lenovo worked with Pantone on seven named finishes, which is the part of the brief that copies Apple’s colorful cheap Mac. The Neo ships in Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. The Vibe adds a longer paint rack and a keyboard you can restyle. Interchangeable keycaps are sold separately, so the fun colors on the keys are an extra SKU, not a free party in the box.

• Dreamy Violet: Muted violet, grouped with the five “trendy” paints that ship out of the box.
• Spicy Gold: Warm golden yellow on the metal samples Lenovo showed.

Color is doing real work here. Windows laptops at this price have looked like rental-office tools for a decade, while Apple used paint to make a cheap Mac feel like a gift. Lenovo is answering that, then charging extra for keycaps. The OLED pairing on Moody Blue and Lowkey Grey is the quieter tell: the sober colors get the better panel, which is the reverse of how most brands assign gold and coral to the show unit on the stand.

Where the Spec Sheet Gives Ground

The opening 8GB option, when it exists, is single-channel memory, which cuts bandwidth on AMD’s integrated graphics. Keyboard backlight is optional, so some $699.99 units will ship dark keys. The base IPS panel on the August sheets is 60Hz with 45% NTSC, a clear step down from the 120Hz 100% sRGB panel and from the Neo’s 500-nit Liquid Retina. Higher-capacity SSDs on those sheets are QLC, not TLC. That is not a surprise at this price. All of it is easy to miss in a seven-color photo.

Build details are still thin. Lenovo showed metal and plastic and did not publish which SKU is which, or how the 14.9 mm figure moves once a 65Wh battery and an OLED stack go in. Starting weight is 2.87 pounds. Heavier IPS packs on the August sheets were listed around 3.06 to 3.15 pounds. The Neo stays at 2.7 pounds in one aluminum shell, with 60% recycled content by Apple’s own environmental report, including 90% recycled aluminum. The Vibe has no matching materials sheet yet.

IFA hands-on notes also treated the processors as entry silicon, which matches the SKU list. A Ryzen AI 5 430 in a thin 14-inch chassis will not behave like a Ryzen AI 9 HX in a 16-inch laptop. Snapdragon X should help idle battery on the 50Wh pack, and it is the line that locks RAM. People who want Arm on Windows for battery life are picking the soldered machine. People who want a RAM slot are picking x86 and a bigger 15-inch cell.

The IdeaCentre AIO I Lands in November

Lenovo is running the same color idea on a desk. The IdeaCentre AIO I is an all-in-one with a 24-inch or 27-inch display, paints in the Vibe family, and a starting price of $939. It is due in November 2026, the same month as the Snapdragon Vibe. It is a sibling, not a substitute. If the laptop’s pitch is ports plus a RAM door at Neo money, the AIO’s pitch is a matching lid for a kitchen counter.

AMD IdeaPad Vibe units are the ones to watch in October 2026, because that is when the upgrade story can be checked in a store, not on a slide. Snapdragon units in November 2026 will tell you whether Arm battery life is worth a soldered 24GB ceiling. Intel still has no month on the calendar.

The $699.99 number is real, and it sits on the same shelf Apple created when it added $100 to the Neo. The RAM count behind that number is the part the configurator still has to show.
