Gemini for Windows Cannot Act on Gmail or Drive

Google’s Gemini app for Windows cannot delete a Gmail message or sort Drive files by size. The free desktop client went live for Windows 10 and 11 on September 10, 2026, with an Alt + Space overlay.

ChatGPT’s Windows app already clicks, types, and moves files on the same PC. Google’s own launch post still points Windows users at Spark, Gmail, and Drive.

What the Gemini Windows App Can Do on Day One

Erin Pettigrew, director of product management for the Gemini app, said the Windows client is meant to sit beside the tools you already have open. Google listed three ways you can use the Gemini app on a PC, and the first is the shortcut.

Press Alt + Space and Gemini opens over the active window. You can fact-check a document, ask for title ideas, then drop back into the file. Without a Google sign-in, that overlay is a chatbot and little else.

Sign in and the app adds stored chats plus tabs for images, video, and a library of saved media. Connect a Workspace account and it can surface a daily brief of important mail. Google also said you can generate images with Nano Banana and direct video with Gemini Omni from the same window, with a paid Google AI plan required for Spark and Omni, and with a floor of 18 years old.

The company’s own account posted the pitch the same day, selling the overlay rather than any new control over Windows itself.

The Gemini app is now available for Windows.

Google said the app is lightweight and will not slow the PC, and that more native desktop features will arrive later. The download lives at gemini.google/desktop, and the post did not walk through a computer-use demo on Windows the way OpenAI now does for ChatGPT.

GOOGLE’S THREE PITCHES FOR WINDOWS

• The shortcut: Alt + Space opens Gemini over whatever you are already doing on the PC.
• The workspace: Signed-in users get chats, media tabs, a daily mail brief, and a promised handoff to Spark plus pulls from Gmail and Drive.
• The studio: Image generation with Nano Banana and video with Gemini Omni sit in the same app, with Omni behind a Google AI subscription.

Those three items are a browser Gemini with a hotkey. The unpaid Windows test never reached Spark, and the chatbot still could not finish the two Workspace jobs that would have justified a dedicated client.

Gmail and Drive Still Will Not Take Orders

The obvious Windows job for a Google assistant is inbox and Drive hygiene, because Google already holds both. Asked to delete Social-tab mail older than 60 days, Gemini refused and sent the user back into Gmail.

I found emails from your Gmail search, but I am unable to permanently delete them for you. I do not have access to an API function that performs email deletions or modifies category tabs. To clear or manage your ‘Social’ tab, you will need to open Gmail, navigate to the Social tab (or search category:social older_than:60d), select the messages, and delete them manually.

Asked for the largest file in Google Drive, it refused again. Gemini said it did not have direct visibility into file metadata such as exact storage size in MBs or GBs, and had no way to sort all Drive files by size.

Pettigrew’s post had just told Windows users they could draft a project summary by pulling from Gmail and Drive. Pull is not delete, and it is not a size sort either. Connecting Gemini to those apps is the same Workspace glue that keeps people in Gmail, and it still will not let this Windows client finish the cleanup.

A video prompt for a bunny and a squirrel playing tennis vanished after a tab change. The saved-media library then showed itself as unavailable. That is a thin desktop shell around a cloud chatbot that still cannot execute the two Google jobs sitting behind the sign-in screen.

Spark Needs a Paid Google AI Plan

The Windows post sells Gemini Spark as the 24/7 personal agent you hand multi-step work to. A footnote on that same page says a Google AI subscription is required, availability varies, and users must be 18 or older.

Google announced Spark on May 19, 2026, as a cloud agent on Gemini 3.5 and the Antigravity harness, and put the first public beta on the $100 AI Ultra plan in the United States. It also cut the top Ultra tier to $200 from $250. Google’s current plans page lists Access to Gemini Spark on AI Pro, which also includes 5 TB of storage.

A Windows run that was not on a paid Google AI plan did not show Spark as a feature or even as an upsell. Settings offered Scheduled Actions instead, with samples such as a weekend recipe and a morning motivational quote. That is a reminder list, not an agent that works the inbox.

The agent Google will actually let a Pro or Ultra subscriber loose on a PC is sitting in Chrome. The same plans page describes Chrome auto browse, which can research hotels and flights across dates, and it is listed for Google AI Pro and Ultra users in the US. The new Windows app is the overlay. The task-doing path is still the browser.

WHAT WE KNOW

• The client: The Gemini app is live globally for Windows 10 and 11, with Alt + Space as the call-up.
• The refusals: In an unpaid Windows test, Gemini would not permanently delete Gmail mail and would not sort Drive files by size.
• The gate: Spark and Omni carry a Google AI subscription requirement on the launch post, with availability that varies.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• Paid Spark in the Windows UI: Google’s post says you can hand work to Spark inside the app; an unpaid client did not show that surface.
• Local file control on Windows: Google documented PDF sorting on the Mac Spark client and did not show the same desktop-file demo for Windows.

Windows users asking what Gemini does better than other agents before they install are asking the right question. A reply under Google’s own launch post skipped the desktop client entirely and asked when Gemini 3.5 Pro or 4.0 Pro would ship. The wrapper is not the draw.

ChatGPT Already Clicks Through the Same Desktop

OpenAI spent July 9, 2026, turning the ChatGPT desktop app into a work agent. Chat, Work, and Codex sit in that app on every plan, including Free, on Windows and Mac. Work runs on GPT-5.6. OpenAI said more than 5 million people use Codex every week, and more than 1 million of them use it for work outside software.

On desktop, Computer Use lets ChatGPT operate the PC through clicking, typing, and moving files across apps, tools, and the browser. That can be a one-off job or a Scheduled Task. Plugins reach Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, mail, and calendars. The built-in browser can open and refine files from Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 inside ChatGPT.

Gemini’s Windows client can talk about Gmail. ChatGPT’s Windows client can move a file. That is the gap the shortcut does not close.

WHO CAN ACT ON YOUR PC

Google still owns the inbox those Windows users live in. OpenAI is the one offering to operate the desktop those inboxes sit on.

The Settings Menu Imports Your Other Chatbot

The useful controls in the Windows app are buried under Settings, and they are about memory, not mouse control. A Personal Intelligence tab turns Gemini’s memory about you on or off. A separate Import memory to Gemini tab asks another chatbot to summarize what it knows about you, then feeds that summary into Gemini.

Google described that switch path on March 26, 2026. You copy a suggested prompt into the other app, paste the summary back, and Gemini stores the facts it extracts. Claude offers a similar handoff. It is a clever way to drain context out of a rival, and it does not delete the Social tab.

Scheduled Actions, sitting in the same Settings stack, were the closest the unpaid Windows client came to an agent, and the samples were a weekend recipe and a morning quote. Personal Intelligence can make replies feel more familiar. It cannot grant an API function Gemini said it does not have.

Mac Users Got Desktop Spark in June

Google shipped Gemini for macOS months before this Windows client, and the Mac app is where Spark first left the chat window. On June 30, 2026, Adam Coimbra, director of product management for the Gemini app, and Srinivasan Venkatachary, vice president of engineering at Google DeepMind, said Spark on the Mac could sort all the PDFs in your Downloads into folders, and could build a budget sheet from invoices saved on the computer, on a schedule, with access limited to files the user allows.

That June post also added Google Tasks and Google Keep, plus Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals, and it promised remote jobs from a phone onto a Mac left at home. None of that desktop-file demo appears in the September 10 Windows announcement, which instead promises more native desktop features later.

HOW THE DESKTOP AGENT RACE RAN

1. March 26, 2026: Google starts rolling out memory import so Gemini can absorb another assistant’s summary of you.
2. May 19, 2026: Spark debuts as a 24/7 cloud agent, first gated to the $100 AI Ultra plan in the US.
3. June 30, 2026: Spark reaches the Gemini macOS app and can sort local PDFs and build sheets from files on the Mac.
4. July 9, 2026: ChatGPT Work and Computer Use land in the ChatGPT desktop app on Windows and Mac, including on the Free plan.
5. September 10, 2026: Gemini for Windows ships as an Alt + Space overlay that still cannot delete Gmail or sort Drive by size.

Windows is the operating system Google does not own, and it is the one where a Google agent that could actually run Gmail would have mattered most. Mac already had the file-sorting demo. Windows got the hotkey.

Google Says More Desktop Features Come Later

Pettigrew closed the Windows post by calling the app the beginning, with more native desktop features to roll out over time. Until an API that deletes mail or reads Drive size shows up in that client, Alt + Space still opens a chatbot that sends you back to Gmail to finish the job.

Install it if you want Gemini over every window without a browser tab. Do not install it to clean an inbox Google already hosts.
