The SB Nation App Reaches Canada for Raptors Fans
Nine days after its U.S. launch, the SB Nation app is available in Canada, the first foreign test of Penske’s bet on owned sports comments.
Raptors HQ told Canadian readers on September 10 that the SB Nation app is available north of the border, nine days after the U.S. launch. The free iPhone and Android client stacks 200-plus team blogs, a personalized feed, and a Game Chat tab on one home screen.
Penske Media bought SB Nation on June 18 with the leftover Vox brands. Eighty-four days later, the first foreign storefront is a hockey country whose NBA talk already lives on Reddit, X, and the official Toronto Raptors app.
The App Is Live in Canada
Team blogs inside the network started telling Canadian fans the storefront was open on the night of September 9, timed to an NFL kickoff. Raptors HQ followed on September 10 with the same download note that U.S. sites ran on September 1, adding that Canadian users can now search SB Nation in the Apple and Android stores.
Field Gulls, the Seattle Seahawks blog in the same network, posted the Canada notice with a screen recording of live Game Chat and store links. That is the product the Toronto post is selling: not a new Raptors newsroom, a phone client for blogs that already exist.

The U.S. public push was September 1. Version 1.0 had already been sitting on Apple’s store since August 27, so the Canada day is a geo unlock on a build that has been in the wild for two weeks, not a separate Canadian app.
THE ROAD TO A CANADA STOREFRONT
- August 5, 2025: SB Nation relaunches its sites with The Feed and fewer ads for logged-in readers, after Ryan Pauley, then Vox Media’s president of revenue and growth, described the work as a hedge against fading search clicks.
- June 18, 2026: Penske Media buys SB Nation, The Verge, Eater, and the other leftover Vox brands, and folds them into a new subsidiary called PMX.
- August 27, 2026: Version 1.0 of the SB Nation iPhone app lands on the App Store.
- September 1, 2026: U.S. team sites publish the download posts and say the app is U.S.-only for now.
- September 9, 2026: Network blogs tell Canadian users the app is live, and Google Play logs an update.
- September 10, 2026: Raptors HQ publishes the Canada download note for Toronto readers.
The official Toronto Raptors app from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment still handles scores, shot charts, and ticket-adjacent fan access. SB Nation is not trying to replace that client. It is trying to pull the comment thread off the mobile web.
Penske’s First Product After the Vox Leftovers Deal
The Canada unlock is a small store setting with a large owner behind it. Penske’s June purchase of SB Nation closed after James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems paid more than $300 million in May for New York magazine, Vox.com, and the Vox podcast network. Penske had already put $100 million into Vox and was the largest shareholder. Financial terms of the leftover-brands deal were not disclosed. Existing Vox shareholders kept a minority stake in PMX, a subsidiary of more than 25 titles that the companies said reach hundreds of millions of people a month and stage more than 300 live events a year.
Ryan Pauley, who had been Vox Media’s president, became president of PMX and reports to Jay Penske and PMC president Craig Perreault. Jay Penske said the company had “long admired these unique brands and companies.” Pauley said the digital titles bring “highly engaged audiences” into the live-events machine.
John Ness, SB Nation’s head of network, put a sharper point on the app itself. He said fans are tired of toxic social threads and tired of feeling that AI is crawling into those same threads, and that people who already go straight to a team blog are the readers who still matter if search stops sending clicks.
We are lucky to have been building our moat for over a decade at this point. If Google decides to only serve AI tomorrow, we feel like we’re in a really strong place.
John Ness, head of network, SB Nation
The company said its sites see more than 1 million comments a month, and that the figure is up nearly 20% this year. That is the asset Penske bought. The app is the box it now wants those comments to live in, on a home screen Google does not control.
Game Chat, The Feed, and Swipeable Team Sites
Ricky O’Donnell, SB Nation’s associate director of programming, wrote that the client “still feels like SB Nation, but also feels like the best parts of Reddit, all rolled into one.” The store copy is blunter. This is not a scores app and not a generic sports social network. It is a wrapper for the blogs and the people who already argue in them.

The Feed, launched on the websites on August 5, 2025, is the user-post layer that replaced older Fanposts. The app adds a first-class Game Chat tab for the live thread those sites have run for two decades, covering football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, plus UFC, boxing, and WWE nights. Sean Rueter, a Cageside Seats staffer, said he sat in a Rebel Heart Dynamite live blog and then jumped into the NFL Feed’s 1,000-plus comment thread for the season opener, which is the behavior the client is built to keep on-platform.
Along with the app, the network opened NFC East Mixtape, a single community for the Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants. O’Donnell also noted that teams without a full blog still get a Feed on the app, using the Chicago Bulls as the example, so the comment graph is no longer limited to sites that have their own domain.
WHAT THE APP PUTS ON THE HOME SCREEN
- Personalized feed: Posts from the team blogs a user follows, in one scrolling list.
- Game Chat: Live, threaded game-day talk billed as a faster version of the old open thread.
- Community pages: Articles and user posts for a team, sorted by newest, most discussed, or most recommended.
- Discover: A way to add other leagues and blogs without leaving the client.
- Reply alerts: Push notifications when someone replies or recs a post, the same hook the web rebuild promised a year ago.
Raptors HQ sits inside that stack as “A Toronto Raptors Community” at raptorshq.com, one name in SB Nation’s own directory of 200-plus team sites. Canadian users who download for the Raptors also get every other blog they swipe onto, which is the point of shipping one network app instead of 200 white-label clients.
Why the Listings Still Say Vox Media
The ownership change is three months old on paper and barely visible in the stores. Apple lists the developer as Vox Media, Inc. Google Play lists Vox Media Engineering, rates the Android build Mature 17+, and puts a 2026 copyright line for VM Publishing, LLC. The Apple privacy nutrition label points readers to a privacy policy now sitting on PMC, which is the one place the new parent’s initials show up in the install flow.
Apple says usage data may be used to track people across apps and websites owned by other companies. Data linked to the user includes email address, user ID, device ID, and photos or videos. Advertising data sits in the not-linked-to-you bucket for third-party ads. The parent company changed. The tracking copy still reads like a Vox Media product because, in the stores, it still is one.
That lag is not a scandal. It is a tell. PMX can put SB Nation next to Sportico in a corporate deck, and the phone in a Toronto pocket still installs a Vox-labelled binary. The bet is that fans will not care what the developer line says if Game Chat is faster than the mobile web they already hate.
A 4.6 Rating on 25 Reviews
The early store math is the weakest part of the pitch. Apple shows a 4.6 rating from 25 iPhone reviews for a free client listed as iPhone-only. Google Play shows 1,000-plus downloads for an Android listing that still contains ads, last updated September 9. Those are not the same metric as a million web comments a month, and they should not be read as one.
EARLY APP STORE TALLY
| Store | Signal | Ads flag | Latest mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | 4.6 from 25 ratings | Not labelled “contains ads” | Version 1.0.4 |
| Google Play | 1,000-plus downloads | Contains ads | Updated September 9, 2026 |
Reviewers who like the app keep saying the same thing in plainer words than the marketing posts: the mobile website was miserable, and a native client that jumps between blogs is the fix they wanted after they quit social feeds. One named reviewer asked for In-5, the network’s daily trivia game, and said they would switch fully if it landed in the client. The developer account replied that In-5 is coming later this year and is getting extra work so it functions well.
A staff account left a five-star review and disclosed the job, which is honest and also a reminder that the rating pool is still small enough for insiders to move it. Public posts about the app are still almost all from SB Nation blogs themselves. The argument has not really left the building.
Raptors HQ Shipped a Phone App in 2011
Toronto readers have seen this movie. On August 26, 2011, Raptors HQ posted that an SB Nation iPhone app was in the App Store, free, with breaking news, comments, and a custom list of blogs, and that an Android build was supposed to follow. That client did not become the way a generation of Raptors fans talked during games. Reddit, Twitter, and later X did.
The 2026 app is a second try with a different fear behind it. In 2011 the threat was that desktop blogs would miss the smartphone. In 2026 the threat is that search and social both stop being reliable doors, and that the only readers left are the ones who already know the URL. Ness’s moat line is the 2026 version of that fear. Canada is a test of whether those readers will put a second sports app on a phone that already holds the official Raptors client, League Pass, TSN, and Sportsnet.
Raptors HQ’s own 2025 site rebuild already promised fewer ads for logged-in people: video players that stop chasing the scroll, and no full-page pop-ups over comments. The app repeats that promise and adds swipeable blogs. The unproven part is whether Toronto users who live in group chats and Reddit game threads will rec a post inside a PMX binary when the same joke is already on X.
The Trivia Game That Still Lives on the Website
The Canada storefront does not change what the product is. It changes who is allowed to install it. A Raptors reader in Toronto can now get the same Game Chat a Lakers reader in Los Angeles got on September 1, inside a network Penske has owned since June 18. That is the whole foreign-market move.
THE GAPS THE PITCH DOES NOT CLOSE
- Install base: 1,000-plus Android downloads and 25 iPhone ratings against 1 million web comments a month.
- Ads copy: Team blogs still sell “fewer ads” while Google Play still marks the Android build as containing ads.
- Habit loop: In-5, the daily trivia that keeps people opening the website, is not in the app yet.
- Developer name: Stores still ship a Vox Media binary after a Penske deal whose price was never disclosed.
The developer’s own reply is the cleanest next date on the calendar. In-5 is due later this year, which means the daily reason to open SB Nation still sits in a browser, not in the client Canada just received. Until that game moves, the app is a faster comment page with a maple-leaf storefront, and the bet is that this is enough for people who already rec posts at raptorshq.com.
