IllFonic Cuts Halloween’s Closet Power-Up Before Launch

IllFonic pulled Halloween: The Game’s closet power-up after Loomis, an endgame reinforcement, could join it, then blamed a pairing bug the crash notes never named.

IllFonic pulled the Two-Person Power-Up from Halloween: The Game in a September 5 hotfix, then called the cut a major oversight. Deluxe Edition buyers had only been in Haddonfield since September 4, when a clip of psychiatrist Samuel Loomis in a closet with 17-year-old Lynda van der Klok tore through the player base.

The studio later said endgame reinforcement characters could join the minigame, which it never listed in the crash patch. The September 8 launch on consoles and PC is still on.

A Closet Buff With No Guest List

Halloween: The Game is a 1v4 slasher sandbox set on Halloween night, 1978. Four civilians try to keep Haddonfield alive while one player wears the mask as Michael Myers. Loomis is a hero civilian in that mix, built on deceased actor Donald Pleasence’s likeness, and the film teens are playable too, including Lynda, Laurie Strode, Annie Brackett, and Bob Simms.

The minigame sat on top of a hide prompt. If you climbed into a closet that already held another player, the game asked whether you wanted to ask them out. There is no sex animation. The camera shakes, the pair grunt, and both people mash a moving bar.

HOW THE CLOSET WORKED

  • The hide: Two civilians share one closet during a match.
  • The ask: The second player gets a prompt to ask the first one out, which the other player can accept.
  • The mash: Both keep a moving line in a marked part of a bar long enough to fill a heart.
  • The payout: Success grants both characters the Stronger Together buff.

That is a slasher-movie gag with a score attached, the same dumb hookup that gets people knifed in these films. Anyone who could hide could get the prompt. The game did not check age, role, or how that second body had entered the match.

Loomis and the Cops Walked Straight In

IllFonic’s own explanation never named Loomis. It named “endgame reinforcement characters.” In the multiplayer loop, civilians who go down do not stay out. Late in a match, players can force a much harder finish by drawing in police and Dr. Loomis to help detain Myers, a sequence the studio walked through at PAX East as the elaborate way to end a hunt without simply fleeing.

Those reinforcements are still playable people in the same sandbox. They can hide. They can take a closet prompt. The viral clip is Loomis, a man the game places in his fifties, stepping into a closet already holding Lynda, who is 17 in this story. The pairing the internet screenshotted is the pairing the hotfix language describes.

Players checking Lynda after the patch found her related trait gone as well. In the 1978 film she is the one who ducks into a closet with Bob. The trait read as a nod to that scene. It left with the minigame.

The September 5 Notes Never Mentioned It

IllFonic posted the September 5 Early Access hotfix notes at 1:48 p.m. PDT and framed the build as crash work. The list covers challenges that were not tracking, offline play getting caught in the login queue, a missing prompt for Myers to get up after being downed, and a Performance Mode render bug on Xbox Series S. The Two-Person Power-Up is not on it.

The official Halloween: The Game account spent September 6 on other fires. It told Xbox players the hotfix had been submitted and was still waiting to deploy. It said a Day One patch on 9/8/2026 would bring more fixes. It also said crossplay parties were breaking matchmaking, a miss that already dogged the studio’s Killer Klowns launch. The closet never appeared in those posts.

On the official channels, the live complaint is still the Xbox build, the login queue, and party matchmaking. The minigame is the thing that left without a patch-note line.

Why the Studio Deleted the Whole Thing

IllFonic confirmed the removal on September 6, about 21:30 GMT, on its studio account. It did not promise the closet would return, and it did not say Loomis would be blocked if it did.

Players may have noticed that our latest hotfix removed the Two-Person Power-Up minigame. This was due to an unintended issue that allowed endgame reinforcement characters to engage with the minigame, a major oversight on our part.

The second half of that post says more minigames are coming, “but our current focus is on immediate game needs.” That leaves a clean design fork the studio did not take. It could have stopped reinforcements from seeing the ask-out prompt. It pulled the Stronger Together loop for everyone instead.

On the game’s subreddit, players asked for the closet back, some of them fine with a Loomis ban if that was the problem. Replies under the studio post reached for Friday the 13th: The Game, where counselor challenges already went further on nudity and sex, and treated this cut as a step backward from a licensed slasher the same team had already shipped.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The cut: The Two-Person Power-Up is gone on the patched PC build, and IllFonic has confirmed it meant to remove it.
  • The stated bug: Endgame reinforcements could enter the minigame, which the studio called a major oversight.
  • The clip: Loomis, who arrives as that kind of reinforcement, could complete the closet sequence with Lynda.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A return date: IllFonic has not said the closet minigame will come back with a guest list, or at all.
  • Estate contact: There is no public statement from the Pleasence estate, or from Compass, about the clip.

Gating the prompt would have kept the joke for Bob and Lynda and locked out the psychiatrist and the cops. Deleting it is faster, and it is also how a license holder stops a dead actor’s face from starring in the first viral clip of a launch weekend.

Sexual Themes Were Already on the Box

This is not a teen-rated game that accidentally grew an adult joke. The Xbox store rates Halloween: The Game Mature 17+, with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Nudity, Use of Drugs, and Sexual Themes on the Xbox listing. IllFonic’s own Steam content note says players can drink beer and smoke marijuana from their inventory, and that some nudity occurs in the single-player story.

The July 7 physical-edition announcement already carried Mature 17+ in the July press release. Digital copies are $39.99. A Limited Collector’s Edition is $149.99, with boxed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X copies due October 6 through Nighthawk Interactive. Compass International Pictures, which still manages the 1978 film and Michael Myers, is named as a partner in that release, alongside Further Front and co-publisher Gun Interactive.

WHERE THE GAME CAN SELL

Market Rating or block Digital on September 8
United States Mature 17+ Yes
Australia Refused classification over a controlled substance No
New Zealand Digital-only after OFLC guidance Digital only

Australia’s block, which IllFonic tied to a controlled substance rather than Myers or the kills, already took the marijuana inventory onto a ratings board docket. Japan’s PlayStation 5 SKU was pulled after the studio said it could not get a CERO rating for the violence and nudity and would not strip the film’s tone to pass. The closet was one more adult system in a game that had already been arguing with censors. It is the one they could not leave un-gated, because the guest list included a licensed likeness.

The Last Slasher License Ended in Court

IllFonic has shipped this genre before. It developed Friday the 13th: The Game, released in 2017 with Gun. On June 11, 2018, Gun and IllFonic halted all new maps, Jasons, and counselors after a rights fight over the films made fresh content unworkable. The game later left storefronts when the license ran out at the end of 2023.

Gun’s account of the Friday the 13th license says the publisher paid Horror, Inc. more than $18 million in royalties, then watched the same rights fight choke off the updates players wanted. IllFonic’s Halloween partners are different companies, Compass and Trancas rather than Horror, Inc., and the 1978 film’s chain of title is its own mess. The pattern the studio already lived through is simpler than that paperwork: a playable likeness is not a sandbox prop, and an unscripted social toy will find the face you cannot put in that joke.

Loomis is the face they paid to put in Haddonfield. The closet did not care.

Day One Still Has to Clear Xbox

Full launch is September 8, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, four days after Deluxe buyers walked in. As of September 6, the studio was still waiting on Xbox to deploy the same hotfix PC already had, and it was still chasing a crossplay party bug. The Day One patch it flagged for 9/8/2026 is for fixes and improvements, not a dated return for Stronger Together.

THE WEEKEND BEFORE LAUNCH

  1. September 4, 2026: Deluxe early access opens and a clip of Loomis completing the closet sequence with Lynda spreads.
  2. September 5, 2026: Hotfix 1 lands on PC at 1:48 p.m. PDT with crash fixes; the Two-Person Power-Up is gone and unlisted.
  3. September 6, 2026: IllFonic names the endgame-reinforcement bug, while @HalloweenTVG says the Xbox hotfix is still waiting and a Day One patch is due September 8.
  4. September 8, 2026: The game launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox without the closet buff in the patched build.

IllFonic told players to watch its socials for more minigames. The cops and Loomis still drop into Haddonfield on that September 8 build. The ask-out prompt does not.
