Gemini’s App Glue Stops the Proton Switch for Many

Proton apps match Google basics and Lumo adds private AI, yet Gemini’s multistep control of Keep, Tasks, Photos and Maps still locks power users into Google.

Parth spent weeks running Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive and Pass as daily replacements for their Google counterparts and found the individual apps polished enough. The switch still failed for one reason: Gemini’s ability to treat Keep, Tasks, Docs, Photos, Maps and Messages as a single controllable system.

That gap is no longer about missing features in any one privacy app. It is about the second layer of AI orchestration that now sits on top of Google’s stack and quietly raises the cost of leaving.

Proton Apps Cleared the Basic Bar

The experiment started with low expectations. Proton has long covered encrypted email and VPN. In 2026 the suite feels more complete. Proton Mail handles everyday mail cleanly. Calendar covers scheduling. Drive stores and shares files, including password-protected links. Proton Pass manages passwords without drama.

The Android apps share a consistent design language, so the setup reads as one ecosystem rather than a bag of separate tools. Parth wrote that the individual replacements “were good enough for the way I use those services.” The problem only appeared when the apps had to work together through an assistant.

Gemini Turned Separate Apps Into One Command Surface

Gemini no longer sits beside Google’s apps. On Android it can act inside them. With permission it pulls from Gmail threads, creates or updates Google Keep notes, adds items to Tasks, searches Drive documents, finds photos by description, starts Maps navigation, and hands content to Messages or WhatsApp.

Google’s own help pages describe the model clearly: users toggle apps in Connected Apps settings and supported actions, then issue natural-language requests that cross those boundaries. The assistant becomes the starting point rather than a side chatbot.

That changes daily habits. Instead of opening Keep, finding a note, copying text, switching to Messages and pasting, the user tells Gemini to locate the note and send it. The same pattern works for restaurant names saved in Keep that should open in Maps, or photo searches that feed a message.

Multistep Requests Are Where the Habit Forms

Single integrations are useful. Chaining them is what locks the workflow. Google keeps expanding the surface. Workspace updates continue to deepen Gemini inside Docs, Drive and Gmail. On the consumer side the Connected Apps list already covers the productivity core plus media and messaging. Recent Gemini model pricing moves for agents point toward even more automated loops.

Lumo Covers Privacy but Not the Full Orchestration Layer

Proton’s answer is Lumo. The company launched it as a zero-access encrypted assistant and has pushed hard. Lumo 2.0, detailed in Proton’s June 2026 announcement, brings advanced reasoning modes, image generation and editing, deeper web search with citations, long-term memory that the user controls, Projects as encrypted workspaces, and Custom Lumos for repeated tasks.

More than 10 million people have started using Lumo. Benchmarks cited by Proton show large gains over the prior version: Lumo 2.0 Max scores 240 percent higher on an independent intelligence index, and everyday responses run up to 76 percent faster. It links to Proton Drive so users can add Proton Drive files to knowledge base for a given chat or Project. Files stay under zero-access encryption; Proton itself cannot read the content.

That is a strong privacy story. It is still not the same command surface. Lumo can reason over the files you explicitly add. It does not yet create a Keep-style note inside another Proton app, start navigation from a saved location, or push a summary into a message thread the way Gemini does across Google services. The Android and iOS apps exist, but the agent layer stops at Drive context rather than full ecosystem actions.

Privacy-focused users on X often praise exactly this trade-off. They call Lumo a data-sovereignty tool and a vault for sensitive work. Others note that capability still trails the biggest frontier models on complex agent loops, and that missing deep app handoffs remains the practical friction.

Proton Already Knows the Integration Gap Exists

The company is not ignoring the problem. Its spring and summer 2026 roadmaps state the issue in plain language: people leaving Big Tech ecosystems lose the fluid connections they had before. Proton is therefore “investigating how we can build closer integration between our tools for faster workflows” and promises new integration features in the coming months.

Drive performance has already improved sharply. Shared-file downloads run 70 percent faster thanks to SDK work. Calendar is being rewritten for offline mode and better defaults. Mail is adding category views and easier Gmail bridging so users can send from their old address while they migrate. Lumo itself is getting a desktop app meant to act as a hub across email, browser and chat, plus an API for other platforms.

Those steps matter. They also confirm that the second-order problem is real: individual encrypted apps can reach feature parity, yet the AI orchestration layer still has to be rebuilt from scratch under a different privacy model. That takes time.

The same roadmap language about closer integration between Proton tools shows the company understands why some testers bounce after a few weeks.

Who Feels the Lock-In Most

Casual users who mainly check mail and store a few files can switch with little pain. Power users who already treat Gemini as the front door to Keep, Tasks, Photos and Maps notice the missing handoffs immediately. The friction is highest for people who built multistep habits during driving, travel or rapid note-taking.

Privacy remains the clear Proton win. Zero-access encryption, Swiss jurisdiction, open-source components and a no-training-on-user-data stance are structural differences Google does not match. For anyone whose threat model includes large platforms or government requests, that difference can outweigh convenience.

The practical result is a split audience. Some will keep both ecosystems and route sensitive work to Proton while leaving daily orchestration on Google. Others will wait for Lumo’s next integration wave. A smaller group will accept the manual steps because the privacy gain is non-negotiable.

Phone-to-phone moves themselves have grown simpler in other corners of the market. Tools that enable easier phone data transfers without extra apps show how hardware makers reduce one class of switching cost. Software ecosystems are moving in the opposite direction when AI agents deepen the glue.

The Agent Layer Is Becoming the New Moat

Five years ago the moat was data gravity and network effects inside mail or photos. In 2026 the moat is the assistant that can act across those services without the user opening each one. Gemini’s Connected Apps model turned that into a daily habit for many Android users. Proton’s Lumo 2.0 advanced reasoning and memory closes the pure chat gap and protects the data, yet it has not yet rebuilt the cross-service action surface.

Parth’s test is one data point, but the pattern matches what the products themselves advertise. Google keeps listing more apps and more multistep examples. Proton keeps shipping stronger encrypted building blocks and explicit plans for tighter internal links. Until those links support the same class of natural-language handoffs, the privacy-first suite will win on principle and still lose some users on workflow.

The next meaningful test arrives when Lumo or a Proton desktop hub can take a note, a calendar hold and a contact and finish the chain the way Gemini already does. Until then the single hardest app to replace is not Mail or Drive. It is the AI that treats the whole set as one system.
