News 12 App Rebuild Meets Newsroom Cuts Head On

News 12’s rebuilt app launched as the network cut dozens of journalists and consolidated hyperlocal newscasts, shifting weight to mobile alerts and streaming.

News 12 rolled out its rebuilt mobile app in mid-July 2026, just days from sweeping newsroom cuts that eliminated dozens of journalists and folded several hyperlocal newscasts into a single regional feed. The company calls the app faster and cleaner. The same week it said local journalism is changing and the network is evolving with it.

Version 10.0 hit the stores around July 13. Official notices urged viewers to update before the prior build retires, or risk missing breaking news, weather alerts and school closings.

What the Rebuild Ships

News 12 says it rebuilt the experience from the ground up. The pitch is speed, a refreshed design, easier live streaming of the channel, live radar tracking, and quicker access to neighborhood stories.

Core features listed on the stores stay familiar: local breaking news pushed to the device, weather forecasts and storm coverage, daily videos and articles across the tri-state, and topic-based push alerts. The app remains free.

  • Version 10.0 dated July 13 on both major stores, described as performance improvements and bug fixes
  • iOS rating 4.8 stars from roughly 66,000 ratings
  • Android about 4.5 stars and more than 1 million downloads
  • Developer listed as NEWS 12 INTERACTIVE or Optimum Communications

One recent Android review noted the location screen went blank under Android 16, blocking region choice for Hudson Valley, Long Island and the rest. Older reviews, some from earlier redesigns, complained that weather radar, traffic and live features vanished or became hard to reach after updates, while ads lengthened.

The News 12 Mobile version 10.0 on the App Store and the Play listing both emphasize the same local package that has defined the brand for years.

Why the Timing Matches the Cuts

On July 15 the New York Post reported that News 12 laid off at least three dozen people across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester and Connecticut operations. An employee described standalone newsrooms being dismantled and replaced by one shared regional newscast with only brief local inserts. Long Island and New Jersey kept separate broadcasts because of stronger ratings.

Connecticut lost 11 editorial staff including longtime anchors. Remaining reporters in some bureaus are expected to shoot their own stories. Staff raised safety worries about single-person crews at crime scenes.

A spokesperson for parent Altice USA (now under the Optimum banner) said: “Local journalism is changing, and News 12 is evolving with it.” The company added it is taking steps so the network stays strong and sustainable as audiences move across platforms.

Region Impact reported
Bronx & Brooklyn Heavy cuts, 26 on one layoff call
Westchester At least six cut, operations folded
Connecticut 11 editorial including veterans; seven left in Norwalk
Long Island & New Jersey Separate newscasts retained

Earlier rounds hit in 2017 (about 70 jobs after the Altice purchase of Cablevision) and 2023 (30-40 more). The latest round goes further by changing how several channels actually operate.

Who Feels the Shift First

Viewers who relied on neighborhood-specific crews now get more regional packaging on linear TV. The app becomes the main remaining pipe for personalized alerts and on-demand local video.

Remaining staff face thinner resources and solo reporting. Laid-off veterans described hopelessness and some said they are leaving the industry. Optimum continues to lose video subscribers; one 2025 full-year figure showed 252,000 residential video customer losses.

Cord-cutters who already left cable still get the free app and expanding free streaming outlets (Pluto, Tubi, Roku and others carry News 12 New York). That expands reach while the costly multi-newsroom model contracts.

From 1986 Pioneer to Platform Pressure

News 12 Long Island launched December 15, 1986, as the first 24-hour regional cable news service in the United States. Cablevision expanded it into seven channels covering Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester, the Bronx, Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley.

For years the network stayed cable-exclusive, even using the slogan “Only on Cable. Never on FiOS. Never on satellite.” Altice ended that stance after buying Cablevision in 2016. News 12 moved onto FiOS, over-the-air morning slots and multiple free ad-supported streaming platforms.

  1. December 15, 1986, News 12 Long Island debuts as first U.S. 24-hour regional cable news channel
  2. 1995-2005, Additional regional channels launch across the tri-state
  3. 2016, Altice acquires Cablevision; later rounds of cuts begin
  4. 2019 onward, Exclusivity ends; carriage expands to FiOS and free streaming
  5. July 2026, App version 10.0 ships; multi-newsroom restructuring and layoffs land days later

The brand that once sold itself as the cable-only neighborhood window is now fighting for attention on the same phones that carry national aggregators.

How to Move to the New Build

The company says updating is straightforward and automatic updates may have already done the job.

  • iPhone and iPad: open the App Store, search “News 12,” tap Update (or Get if new)
  • Android: open Google Play, search “News 12,” select Update or Install
  • Confirm automatic updates are on if you want future versions without manual steps

The 1M-plus downloads listed on Google Play show the installed base is already large. Users who skip the update will eventually lose the old client when it retires.

Data practices remain typical for a free ad-supported news app. The developer discloses identifiers and usage data that may be used for tracking, advertising and analytics; full details sit in the developer privacy practices for the app.

A Leaner Model on Phones and Streams

The refreshed app is the public-facing half of the same strategy the spokesperson described. Linear hyperlocal production is being pared back in weaker-rated zones. Digital and streaming get the investment that remains.

Local journalism is changing, and News 12 is evolving with it.

That line came from the Altice USA spokesperson after the July cuts. Employees had earlier complained that management’s digital push felt inconsistent even while staff tried to embrace it.

Similar pressures hit other traditional outlets that now lean on apps and social distribution. Some governments are even writing rules pushing traditional news into digital feeds to keep them visible. News 12 is making the same bet with its own client: keep the brand on the lock screen even if the newsroom behind it is smaller.

Whether the faster app and regional newscasts can still deliver the street-level coverage that built the franchise since 1986 is the open question the next storm season will test. For now the company is telling every viewer the same thing: update, or the alerts stop.
