Xiaomi HyperOS 4 Turns Glass Looks Into an Agentic Ecosystem Bet

HyperOS 4 beta opens in China with Soft Light Glass UI, 17.5% faster app loads after nine hours.

Xiaomi opened the HyperOS 4 China beta on August 14 for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, 17 series flagships, Redmi K90 Pro Max models and Pad 8 tablets, pairing a Soft Light Glass interface with Super XiaoAi 2.0 driven by the company’s MiMo large language model. The company claims up to 18 percent faster app loading after nine hours of use versus HyperOS 3, plus realistic refraction effects across system surfaces.

The glass look draws immediate comparisons to Apple’s design language, yet the deeper change sits in how HyperOS now predicts memory needs, reduces instruction overhead and turns the assistant into a multi-step agent that can reach PCs, Macs and smart-home gear under the same Xiaomi account.

Three Beta Waves Start in China Today

Xiaomi split the initial HyperOS 4 beta into three waves limited to the China ROM. Global timing remains unannounced. Recruitment for the first group is live now through the official HyperOS portal for the beta.

HyperOS version numbers have long floated free of strict Android numbering. Xiaomi recently shipped Android 17 code under HyperOS 3.3 on some models while still offering Android 16 builds under the same major HyperOS label. Early reports and the Android 17 developer preview on select Xiaomi models place HyperOS 4 on the Android 17 base for the newest flagships, including the Xiaomi 17 series that already carries the interim update covered in our earlier note on the HyperOS 3.3 Android 17 interim update.

Soft Light Glass Makes the Surface Breathe

Xiaomi calls the new visual system Life Aesthetics and the core material Soft Light Glass. It is a software render that applies translucent surfaces, soft reflections, layered cards, adaptive transparency and interaction-driven lighting rather than a fixed blur or static glass overlay.

Lock screens gain flexible clock placement, stacked notifications that free space for wallpaper, and one-stop customization. Home screens support widget stacking (multiple widgets share one slot and switch), resizable folders and refreshed system icons. Floating windows now rotate with the app orientation and portrait-to-landscape handoffs feel smoother.

Early demos circulating on X show refraction that catches ambient light in the Control Center and lock-screen cards. The effect is not universal. Posts tracking the codebase note Soft Light Glass appears gated to Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9500-class and Xiaomi XRing high-end silicon; other eligible phones keep advanced blur textures closer to HyperOS 3.

Xiaomi Measures Speed After Nine Hours of Use

Lab numbers focus on sustained performance rather than cold-boot peaks. HyperCore adds precise workload calculation that Xiaomi says cuts total instructions by 14.4 percent versus HyperOS 3. AI-driven memory preloading predicts the next task, frees less-needed RAM and holds resources ready.

A new application runtime and desktop optimizations target everyday animations and frequently used apps. The company frames the goal as staying quick at the end of a long day rather than winning short synthetic runs. Real-world results will vary by storage health, installed apps and RAM capacity.

Super XiaoAi 2.0 Runs on Xiaomi MiMo

The assistant upgrade is Super XiaoAi 2.0 (also called Super AI Assistant 2.0 in English coverage). It is powered by Xiaomi’s in-house MiMo models, with references to MiMo V2.5 in the China materials. Expert Mode, available on selected devices with Super XiaoAi 8.1 or later, shifts the assistant from single answers toward multi-step task completion across apps, schedules, documents and connected devices.

Capabilities listed by Xiaomi include voice transcription and note organisation, photo search, travel planning that pulls from saved items and calendars, smart-home and smart-car control, and generation of research reports, PowerPoint decks, simple websites and videos. Generated content still needs user review; Xiaomi notes that outputs can contain errors.

The new Inspiration Ball surfaces contextual actions from on-screen content. Point at an address for navigation, a product for matching listings, a chat time and place to add a calendar entry, or a photo for edits such as object removal. It arrives via a later OTA expected in September, starts disabled, and is enabled under system navigation settings. HyperIsland expands live-activity style islands that keep navigation, deliveries or transactions visible while the user stays in another app; more than 130 services already plug into the Super Island ecosystem as of late July.

MiMo itself is no lightweight add-on. Xiaomi’s MiMo-V2-Pro agent benchmarks and 1M context position the flagship model as a trillion-parameter-class system (42B active) ranked high on global agent and coding indexes, with public API access and partnerships for developer frameworks. That foundation is what lets Super XiaoAi claim multi-app and multi-device orchestration rather than simple chat.

Super XiaoAi 2.0 is fully integrated into the Hyper Island and brings Expert Mode for complex requests that once required jumping between apps.

That summary from high-engagement X feature threads matches the official China materials and underscores how the assistant is meant to sit inside the system rather than float as a separate app.

The Phone Starts Talking to the Mac and the Car

HyperOS 4 refreshes the Fusion Device Center for phones, tablets, computers, wearables, smart-home products and vehicles. Users can pin frequent devices and switch between multiple homes. Dual-phone holding syncs calls and verification codes between two Xiaomi handsets on the same account.

HyperConnect expands rather than replaces existing cross-device paths: camera sharing, connectivity tethering, phone control from a PC, screen casting with picture-in-picture, and drawing from a Pad into desktop apps. Xiaomi explicitly lists support for connecting to iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows devices under the right service versions.

Super XiaoAi Expert Mode functions can hand off conversations, retrieve remote files and run on Xiaomi PCs (Book Pro 14, REDMI Book Pro 14/16 2026 with PC Manager 5.8.1+) and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12+ with Interconnectivity Services 4.0+). The devices must share a Xiaomi account, be nearby for first pairing and sit on the same network. This is the practical expression of the second-order move: the glass is pretty, the agent layer is what makes leaving the Xiaomi account more expensive.

Privacy framing includes an end-cloud privacy computing approach that limits data use to the requested task, plus explicit confirmation before Expert Mode can modify or delete sensitive items. China-first AI services and some input-method tools will not appear on Global, EEA or India ROMs in the same form.

Hardware Gates and the September Foldable Push

Soft Light Glass and the fullest Expert Mode features concentrate on the newest high-end silicon. Mid-range and older eligible devices still receive HyperOS 4 but with the lighter visual treatment and a thinner AI surface. That split is already visible in early codebase notes shared on X and matches how other makers stage advanced materials.

Xiaomi used the HyperOS 4 demos to show an unannounced wider foldable, aligning with separate leaks of a September launch window for the next Mix Fold or similar. The Mix Flip 2 sits in the third beta wave. Foldable-specific optimisations for the Soft Light Glass layers and floating windows are part of the pitch.

The design language arrives while rivals push their own glass and agentic directions. Xiaomi is not inventing the glass trend; it is pairing a competitive surface with an in-house model that already has public agent credentials and deep ties into its own hardware stack.

China beta testers will stress the sustained-performance claims and the Inspiration Ball once it lands. Global users wait for a schedule and for confirmation of which AI pieces survive localisation. The Soft Light Glass panels will be the first thing most people notice. The multi-device agent that stays after the wallpaper is set is the piece that can change how long they stay inside Xiaomi’s account.
