Starlink and Airtel Put Phones on Satellites in the DRC

Airtel Africa and Starlink switched on commercial satellite-to-phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 14 August 2026, the first such deployment anywhere in Africa. Compatible Android smartphones now link straight to Starlink satellites for SMS and light data apps such as WhatsApp wherever Airtel’s terrestrial towers stop.

No dish required. The move turns low-Earth orbit into a backup layer for one of the continent’s hardest-to-cover markets and forces rivals to accelerate their own satellite deals.

Africa’s First Live Satellite-to-Phone Link

The companies describe the DRC activation as the continent’s first commercial Starlink Mobile service. It follows a December 2025 partnership announcement and successful Kenya tests of messaging and light data in March 2026 in spots with no Airtel ground signal.

Starlink already operates in roughly 28 African countries and territories after its Nigeria debut in early 2023. The DRC version uses about 650 satellites built for direct phone connections. Future generations of those birds are slated to carry faster data.

Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa chief executive, called it “a significant milestone for Airtel Africa through our partnership with SpaceX.” He added that the companies are “extending essential connectivity beyond the limits of conventional mobile infrastructure.”

Phones Talk Straight to Orbit

Eligible LTE Android handsets treat the satellites as cell towers in space. Users need a clear view of the sky. Support for Apple devices is planned later. After the free month, access continues through standard eligible data bundles. Airtel has not yet published special satellite pricing.

The service deliberately stops short of unrestricted broadband, video streaming or full mobile-network parity. That keeps it simple and spectrum-light while the constellation densifies.

The contrast is sharp with Starlink’s smaller V5 user terminal, which still needs physical hardware even as it shrinks. Direct-to-cell removes that barrier for basic messaging.

In the United States the same technology underpins T-Mobile’s service, which already delivers direct-to-cell satellite messaging and apps including WhatsApp voice chat and location sharing on most recent phones. Africa’s version starts narrower but shares the core architecture.

From Rebel Ban to Commercial First

DRC authorities banned Starlink terminals in March 2024. Military officials feared the service could help armed groups, especially the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels active in the east. The Congolese Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority reversed course on 2 May 2025 and issued a full licence to Starlink DRC SA.

Conventional dish-based Starlink broadband followed. Six months after the licence the company also joined the country’s $400 million nationwide mobile expansion plan. The Airtel direct-to-phone layer is a different product: no extra kit, no fixed installation.

Thierry Diasonama, Airtel DRC chief executive, pointed to the country’s sheer size, forests, difficult terrain and dispersed communities. Building and maintaining towers there is extremely expensive. The satellite layer, he said, keeps customers “reachable, informed and connected even in areas where terrestrial coverage is unavailable.”

Mining Crews and Medics Get the First Edge

The companies list clear early users: mining firms, transport and logistics operators, farmers, health workers and humanitarian groups working far from fibre or towers. The same link can restore basic contact during natural disasters, conflicts or temporary ground-network outages.

Airtel Moves First in a Crowded LEO Race

Airtel serves customers across Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Niger, Chad, Gabon, Seychelles, Madagascar, the Republic of Congo and the DRC. That is Airtel Africa’s 14-country footprint. The operator reported 183.5 million total customers as of 31 March 2026. Experience from DRC is meant to guide gradual rollouts elsewhere once each regulator signs off.

Competitors are not standing still. Vodacom has its own Starlink partnership covering several African markets. Amazon’s Leo service (formerly Project Kuiper) aims to launch consumer broadband in South Africa in 2027 through local partner Herotel. Starlink itself remains blocked from commercial service in South Africa by local-ownership rules that the company has so far declined to meet via equity stakes.

The DRC first-mover status gives Airtel a marketing and operational edge against MTN and Vodacom in the hybrid coverage story. It also pressures pure terrestrial operators to accelerate their own low-Earth-orbit deals or risk looking incomplete in rural tenders.

What Still Caps the Reach

Only about 30 percent of the DRC population used the internet in 2023 according to ITU figures that also appear in World Bank series on individuals using the Internet in the DRC. That gap is among the largest on the continent. Large landmass, forests and security challenges keep tower economics brutal.

Direct-to-phone satellite coverage lets Airtel claim an extra layer without immediately pouring concrete. Yet the initial service is messaging-first. Full high-speed data waits on denser and more powerful satellites. Pricing after the free trial is unannounced. Apple support is still pending. Regulatory approvals must still clear in each of the other 13 markets.

On X, Starlink itself posted that the service is “providing connectivity via apps and messaging to millions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo” and called it the first African activation. The post drew tens of thousands of views within hours. Replies quickly asked when iPhones would join and when unrestricted data would arrive. Those questions mirror the practical limits on the ground.
