Chip Allocation Sidelines the Base iPhone 18 This Fall

Scarce DRAM is why the base iPhone 18 is expected to miss Apple’s September 9 event and wait until early 2027.

Apple is expected to keep the standard iPhone 18 off the September 9 stage and put its DRAM into Pro phones and a foldable instead. The company has billed a special Apple Event on 9/9 at 10 a.m. PT, under the line Surprise and shine, with a stream on its site and the Apple TV app.

John Ternus, five days into the chief executive job, will be the one standing there. The phone most people actually buy is the one that may not appear.

Wednesday’s Stage Has No Base iPhone

Every September since 2019, Apple has put the regular iPhone next to the Pro models. That pairing is the break this year. Supply-chain reporting, lens-maker comments, and assembler guidance now describe the same split: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable in the fall, with the standard iPhone 18 held into 2027.

Nabila Popal, a senior director of data and analytics at IDC, has been working from that three-model fall. “Our assumption is that they’re going to be launching three models in the fall, the premium side of the models of the 18 series,” she said. “Then the mid/budget devices will be launched in the spring.”

Popal frames that as a way to spread a strong holiday quarter into a weaker spring. The people who actually pack the boxes describe a tighter constraint. Pegatron, one of Apple’s iPhone assemblers, told investors on its second-quarter 2026 call that customers are changing shipment plans because memory and other chips are short, and that higher-margin Pro phones are getting the scarce parts first.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The date: Apple has set the event for September 9 at 10 a.m. PT, with Ternus already in the CEO chair as of September 1.
  • The fall phones: Multiple supplier channels point to iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a first foldable as the September set.
  • The held phone: Pegatron and Largan Precision both point to the first quarter of 2027 for the delayed model.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The foldable’s name: Leaks still split between iPhone Ultra and iPhone Fold, and Apple has not said which it will print on the box.
  • Ship timing: Some supply notes say the foldable could be shown in September and reach stores later, even in December.
  • The sticker: Analysts disagree on how large a Pro price rise Apple will post, so that number waits for the keynote.

A code list in an iOS 27 beta has already named six unreleased iPhone models, which fits a lineup too large for a single fall dump. The regular iPhone 18, an iPhone 18e, and a second iPhone Air are the names attached to the later wave.

Pegatron Says Scarce Chips Went to the Pros

Pegatron’s version is blunt. Bottlenecks in chip making and a structural shortage of key parts are forcing “strategic decisions about how to allocate scarce components.” In that telling, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max stay on a normal September path, and the standard iPhone 18 slips to the first quarter of 2027.

Lin En-ping, chairman of camera-lens supplier Largan Precision, told shareholders that a major U.S. customer had pushed a new product into the first quarter of 2027. He did not name Apple. Largan is Apple’s main iPhone lens supplier, and the timing matches Pegatron’s.

Semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan has described a related jam at TSMC: finished A20 Pro silicon sitting with nowhere to go because the mobile DRAM that has to be packaged with it has not arrived, a backlog on the order of $1 billion. Apple’s A20 Pro design ties the processor and its memory together at the packaging step, so a DRAM delay strands finished chips instead of slowing a later assembly line.

Tim Cook, on his last earnings call as chief executive on July 30, did not treat this as a routine cycle.

We’re in what I would characterize as a 100-year flood on memory pricing with exponential increases in memory prices.

Tim Cook, then CEO, July 30 earnings call

He had already told investors in June that price increases were unavoidable, and that he had not seen a memory market like this in more than 40 years. Apple raised Mac and iPad prices that month and left the then-current iPhone 17 line alone. The September phones are the ones that walk into the new bill.

Chief financial officer Kevan Parekh told analysts that adjusted gross margin fell from 49.3% in March to 48.1% in June, and guided September to 46.5%. Memory, he indicated, accounted for more than the entire drop. Apple still posted a June quarter of $109.4 billion in revenue, with iPhone up nearly 22%, and it reported inventories of $11.09 billion after a large parts buy. Selling more phones and keeping less of each dollar is the pattern Ternus inherits.

Memory Now Takes 27% of the Pro Phone

TechInsights puts the squeeze in dollars. Memory and storage were about 9% of the build cost on a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro and are estimated near 27% on the iPhone 18 Pro. That is the hidden stakeholder in a different form: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which still make the bulk of the world’s DRAM, have been steering wafers toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, where the margin is better.

IPHONE 18 PRO BUILD COST, TECHINSIGHTS ESTIMATES

Part iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 18 Pro estimate Change
12GB LPDDR5X DRAM $39 $145 +272%
256GB NAND flash $13 $51 +292%
All other parts about $530 about $530 unchanged
Total build cost about $582 about $726 +25%

TrendForce’s public board now tracks mobile DRAM contract prices for a further 8% to 13% quarter-on-quarter rise in the third quarter, after conventional DRAM contracts jumped 58% to 63% in the second. Phone makers are bidding for the same wafers as data centers, and they are losing. A gigabyte of HBM eats roughly three to four times the wafer capacity of the low-power DRAM in a handset, which is why the conversion is sticky.

Omdia has already measured what that does at the bottom of the market, where memory can be 60% of the build cost on phones under $400. Apple’s Pro phones can still swallow a larger memory bill. A $799-class iPhone cannot do it as quietly, which is why that slot is the one that can wait. The same squeeze is already feeding iPhone price pressure in India and other markets Apple has tried to shield for as long as it can.

What Ternus Will Show on September 9

Hardware chief for years, Ternus is the first Apple CEO in 15 years who did not come up through operations. Apple’s April 20 notice that John Ternus to become Apple CEO set his first day as September 1, after 25 years inside the company, and moved Cook to executive chairman. His opening event is built around the phones that still have memory tickets.

THE TWO iPHONE WAVES

  • Fall 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable, with new Apple Watch models expected to fill the rest of the hour.
  • Early 2027: the standard iPhone 18, an iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air, the set Pegatron now times to the first quarter.
  • The holdover: iPhone 17 stays the default non-Pro phone through the winter, stretching a model that would usually be discounted the moment its successor lands.

The Pro phones are described as close cousins of iPhone 17 Pro, with a smaller Dynamic Island, an A20 Pro chip on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process, and a variable-aperture wide camera on at least one model. Sizes in the rumor mill stay at about 6.3 inches for Pro and 6.9 inches for Pro Max. Dark Cherry is the color name that keeps coming up. That is not a new shape. It is a more expensive way to buy last year’s silhouette, with the parts mix steered toward the phones that can carry it.

Anyone whose upgrade cycle lands in September either pays that Pro money or waits. People who already treat an iPhone as a two-year device lose less; the iPhone 17 was a strong regular phone, and a lot of buyers never came in every fall. The stranded group is the one that has always used September as the cheap-new-iPhone window and will not cross into Pro pricing.

The Foldable Gets the DRAM the Regular Phone Doesn’t

Apple has been circling a book-style foldable for years. The version now expected on stage is a wide 4:3 device, about 5.5 inches closed and about 7.8 inches open, thin enough that Face ID is expected to give way to Touch ID in the side button. Titanium, a crease Apple has spent years trying to bury, two rear cameras instead of a Pro’s three, and a price around $2,000 are the working details in the leak pile.

That is more memory, more display, and more hinge than a slab phone, in a year when those parts are the expensive ones. Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy Z range, Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and Motorola’s Razr 2026 models already came in higher. Apple is arriving late and dear, which is a strange look next to a skipped $799 slot, until you follow the wafers. The foldable can post a price that covers the DRAM. The regular iPhone 18 cannot do that without teaching the whole mid-tier that “cheap” has moved.

Cost-cutting notes on the delayed regular model run the other way: shared parts with iPhone 18e, a possible dimmer display, even talk of a smaller GPU in the A-series chip. Analysts still split on RAM, with Ming-Chi Kuo at 9GB and Jeff Pu at 12GB. If the lower figure holds, two on-device Apple Intelligence features that need 12GB would stay off the regular phone. The spring iPhone is being designed as the phone that can miss a few things.

Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the Global Electronics Association, still argues that tech prices eventually fall as factories catch up. “Throughout the history of time, the deflationary pressures of technology have always flowed to the consumer,” he said. Pegatron is less lyrical. It told investors the memory shortage could last, with supply and demand perhaps not back in balance until 2028.

Apple Upgrade Turns a Higher Sticker Into Rent

On July 28 Apple launched Apple Upgrade in the United States, a Klarna-backed lease that replaced the old iPhone Upgrade Program. iPhone and Apple Watch leases run 12 or 24 months. Mac and iPad run 24 or 36. iPhone leases started at $17.99 a month for iPhone 17e, with iPhone 17 Pro at $31.99 a month for 24 months on a $1,099 256GB unit. At the end of the term, the customer can upgrade, buy the device, or hand it back.

That product arrived weeks after the Mac and iPad price rises, and just ahead of a fall slate that is all premium. A higher Pro sticker is easier to sell as a monthly bill than as a four-digit checkout number, which is the point. It also keeps the hardware on Apple’s loop: trade-in, lease, next lease. Ownership advocates already dislike that loop. For a company steering scarce DRAM toward $1,000-plus phones, it is the cleanest way to keep unit demand from falling off a cliff.

Carriers feel the other edge. A fall without a new regular iPhone means fewer $799-ish activations and more customers sitting on iPhone 17, or walking into Pro financing they did not plan to carry. Apple still gets mix. The people who move phones for a living get a thinner September.

The Regular iPhone 18 Lands in Early 2027

HOW THE CALENDAR GOT SPLIT

  1. April 20, 2026: Apple names Ternus as incoming CEO and Cook as executive chairman, with the handoff set for September 1.
  2. June 2026: Cook says memory-driven price rises are unavoidable; Apple lifts Mac and iPad prices and leaves the iPhone 17 line in place.
  3. July 28, 2026: Apple Upgrade launches in the U.S. with Klarna, and the old iPhone Upgrade Program is wound down.
  4. July 30, 2026: On his last call as CEO, Cook calls memory pricing a 100-year flood; Parekh guides September gross margin to 46.5%.
  5. August 2026: Pegatron tells investors Pro models stay in September and the standard iPhone 18 moves to the first quarter of 2027.
  6. September 1, 2026: Ternus becomes CEO.
  7. September 9, 2026: Surprise and shine, with the regular iPhone 18 not expected in the room.

A split fall-and-spring iPhone year was already in circulation in 2025, when the foldable was added to a lineup that could run to six models and strain a single factory wave. The memory crunch is what made the cheap phone, not the foldable, the one that lost. Apple still gets a richer mix in its biggest quarter. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron still get paid at AI-era rates. The mid-tier slot in Apple’s own stores, through winter, is last year’s iPhone 17.

Pegatron does not see that parts market back in balance until 2028. The first-quarter 2027 iPhone 18 will arrive in the middle of that wait, not at the end of it.
