Sonos Stakes Its Comeback on ChatGPT and New Speakers

Sonos opened pre-orders on September 1 for the $449 Ace Ultra headphones and $699 Beam Ultra soundbar, and named its software Sonos 27. Both products go on sale September 29.

The ChatGPT hook enters early access on September 8. Custom agents that would give each room a voice do not ship until 2027.

A Name for the Operating System

Sonos spent the event in New York City insisting it is not a speaker company. Brandon Holley, senior director of product development, put it in one line: “What we actually are is an audio operating system.” The company then printed that claim on the software, calling it Sonos 27, and said it will reach every product that already runs the S2 app.

Tom Conrad, the chief executive who took over after the 2024 app collapse, has been aiming at this language for months. On the July 29 earnings call he told investors that conversational computing is moving into the home, and that the fight over who owns the best model is the wrong fight. Access to strong models will be everywhere, he said, and the differences will narrow. The lasting value, in his telling, sits in hardware that can talk across rooms and in software that already knows the shape of a house.

This is just the start of what our audio operating system can do.

That is a large claim for a company that still sells bars, subs, and cans. It is also a confession. The May 2024 app rewrite was supposed to modernize the same stack. It shipped to everyone at once, stripped out basics, and followed Conrad into the job. Naming the audio operating system Sonos 27 is how the company now describes two decades of work. The new boxes are how it gives that pitch something to hold.

The installed base is the reason the pitch matters. Conrad’s third-quarter figures put 53 million connected devices in more than 17 million homes. The newsroom’s own boilerplate says those homes span more than 60 countries, with 100-plus streaming services already wired in. Opening that many rooms to outside models is a bigger move than a midsize soundbar.

The Ace Ultra Joins the House

The first Ace, which went on sale in June 2024, could swap TV audio with a compatible soundbar over Bluetooth. It never joined Wi-Fi as a zone. Owners who spent years grouping kitchens and bedrooms got a premium pair of cans that lived beside the system, not in it. Holley has now described the Ace Ultra as the headphone that product was supposed to be.

Headphone Engine 2 is the hardware that closes the gap. One press sends whatever is playing on a nearby Sonos speaker into the cups. Another press sends it back. The phone can sit in another room. Sonos calls the feature headphone linking, and it is an Early Access extra exclusive to Ace Ultra when the headphones ship on September 29. TrueCinema still retunes the sound when the cans pull a movie off a compatible bar.

ACE AND ACE ULTRA

The $449 Ace Ultra headphone listing also adds two colors, blue agave and beige sand, on top of black and white. A three-minute charge is rated for three more hours. Lossless audio runs over Bluetooth with Qualcomm aptX on a supported phone, or at 16-bit/48 kHz on USB-C. The Ultra is 10 grams heavier than the original Ace, which Sonos lists at 312 grams, and the ear cups are a little roomier.

Holley said the ten-microphone Adaptive ANC is twice as effective as the Ace at “the frequencies that really matter.” The company cites 65 Hz, a typical HVAC rumble, where it claims 2.2 times the canceling, and 120 Hz, the airplane-drone band, at 1.8 times. It did not publish a figure for cafe chatter. Adaptive EQ is supposed to patch leaks from glasses, hair, and jewelry. Those are lab claims until reviewers get units after September 29.

$699 for a Compact 7.1.2 Soundbar

Beam Ultra is the midsize bar rebuilt around height. Sonos put nine custom drivers in the chassis, including two that fire at the ceiling, and rates it as true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos. The Beam Gen 2 it replaces was a 5.0 bar. It virtualized Atmos with a faster chip and no up-firing drivers, and it launched at $449 before later list prices climbed. The Ultra is just under four inches longer than that Gen 2, still compact, in black or white matte.

A redesigned center channel, with a new waveguide and four levels of AI speech enhancement, is the dialogue pitch. Night Sound still tamps down late-night peaks. Trueplay tunes the bar to the room. It groups with the rest of the system over Wi-Fi, and it also takes Bluetooth and HDMI eARC. Add a Sub when the bass runs out, or slide portable speakers behind the sofa when the movie is the point.

SONOS SOUNDBAR LINE

At $699 the Ultra sits $400 under Arc Ultra and $480 over Ray. It is the first Beam that can throw height from real drivers instead of a software trick. In-person demos of that directional effect still leave the usual question: a treated room is not a living room with a ceiling fan and a rug. Units are not in homes yet, so that question stays open until late September.

Can ChatGPT Run a Sonos System?

Yes. Sonos 27mcp, in early access on September 8, lets ChatGPT and other models that speak the Model Context Protocol find a Sonos system and run it, including grouping rooms and starting playback, without opening the app. All products that work with the current app can be controlled that way. Sonos Voice, now branded Sonos 27voice, is a separate in-house assistant for music and mood, opt-in this fall, English first, with no subscription in the company’s own recap of the event.

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data, the same idea as a USB-C port for models. Sonos is hosting that interface so a chatbot you already use can treat the house as one of those tools. Atty Eleti, product lead for ChatGPT Voice at OpenAI, said people will be able to ask ChatGPT to play music anywhere in the home from a phone or computer “without leaving the conversation they’re having.” OpenAI’s ChatGPT Model Context Protocol documentation is the developer-side match for that claim.

WHAT SONOS 27 ACTUALLY ADDS

• Sonos 27mcp: Early access on September 8, built so outside models including ChatGPT can discover and control the system.
• Sonos 27voice: In-house assistant for music and mood, early access this fall, English first, on products that have a microphone.
• Custom agents: Up to 10 user-built personas, each with a model and a voice, promised as a full product in 2027.

Conrad’s line on models is the policy underneath those three bullets. If the models converge, Sonos wants to be the house they plug into, not the company that bets the brand on one assistant. The newsroom named ChatGPT. Stage demos also showed Gemini and Claude behind sample agents. Native Google Assistant support is still missing from the pitch, so Gemini’s path in is the protocol, not a built-in wake word.

2027 Is When Custom Agents Arrive

The part of the event that sounded like science fiction is also the part with no ship date this year. Custom agents, previewed on stage, let a household build up to 10 assistants inside the same system. Each one gets a summon phrase, a voice, a personality, and a choice of model. When they exist, they are supposed to run anywhere Sonos 27voice is on.

Holley offered a moody detective reading the morning news and a coach whispering goals at wake-up. The stage set used a French chef, a music curator, and a trivia champion, sometimes on different speakers in the same home. Nick Millington, chief innovation officer, said the smartest home is not run by one do-everything assistant, and that people should pick or create the right agent for each job.

That is a 2027 product. Shipping the protocol in September and the personas next year is how Sonos avoids another all-at-once dump. It is also how the company asks customers to trust a software story again while the headline hardware is a soundbar and a headphone. Voice stays opt-in. MCP stays early access. The detective in the kitchen stays a slide.

Move 2 and Play as Instant Surrounds

Sonos Fabric is the name for products sensing each other and changing jobs. Two features ride on it this fall, and both are the practical version of the OS talk, because they move sound without a setup wizard.

NEW FABRIC TRICKS THIS FALL

• Portable surrounds: A pair of Move 2 or Play speakers can become wireless rears, starting September 8, then go back to being portables when the credits roll.
• Positioning: High-frequency sound senses where those speakers sit and assigns the surround role, with no extra step in the app.
• Headphone linking: Ace Ultra pulls audio from the closest speaker, Early Access on September 29, still exclusive to that model.

A single Play or Move 2 is not enough. The feature needs two. Once they are in place they configure themselves, which is the point of the positioning work. For anyone who already owns those portables, movie night no longer requires a second pair of dedicated surrounds sitting on shelves all year. For anyone who does not, it is another reason the $699 bar is a start, not a finished theater.

Headphone linking is the other half of that mobility. The system is supposed to notice the nearest speaker and hand the stream to the cups, then hand it back. Sonos says this is the start of more handoff features and then stops. No second date, no second product.

Why the App Is Rolling Out in Pieces

Because the May 2024 app shipped as a single cutover and broke basics like volume, alarms, and queue edits. The new Home, System, and Search tabs, a pin-able room sort, and an iOS virtual volume knob you twist with two fingers start on September 8 as a navigation change inside the app people already have. System health views and presets follow later this fall. Lockscreen volume and play/pause started returning on August 17.

Conrad has been previewing that tone since the July call. He said the company watched new owners and long-time ones use the app at home, then rebuilt how you move through it, and that this is not a new app. Community feedback, including the Sonos subreddit, is part of the public story. The virtual knob is a small flourish. The returning lockscreen controls are the plainer tell: features that vanished are being put back on a calendar, not rediscovered in a rewrite.

THE ROAD FROM THE APP TO OPEN HOUSE

1. May 7, 2024: The rebuilt Sonos app ships worldwide and immediately loses core controls.
2. July 25, 2024: Then-CEO Patrick Spence apologizes that “too many of you have experienced significant problems.”
3. January 13, 2025: Spence leaves. Tom Conrad, a Pandora co-founder who had been on the board since 2017, takes over.
4. July 29, 2026: Conrad reports Q3 revenue of $375 million, up 9%, and adjusted EBITDA of $44 million, up 24%.
5. August 17, 2026: Lockscreen volume and play/pause begin returning.
6. September 1, 2026: Open House in New York. Ace Ultra and Beam Ultra pre-orders open.
7. September 8, 2026: App navigation, portable surrounds, and Sonos 27mcp early access start.
8. September 29, 2026: Both products go on sale. Headphone linking early access starts on Ace Ultra.
9. 2027: Custom agents are planned as a full product.

The money on that list is the part the comeback narrative usually skips. Fiscal 2026 was already guided to 6% to 8% revenue growth before anyone heard a Beam Ultra. The September event is not a rescue drop from a shrinking company. It is a growing one putting an OS name, a ChatGPT pipe, and a 2027 agent roadmap on top of a base that still remembers the last software night.

September 8 is the first live software test, opt-in, on the speakers people already own. September 29 is when a $449 headphone can take a room’s audio with a button, and when a $699 bar with real height drivers shows up under the TV. The personas that would make the house answer in a chef’s voice stay on the 2027 slide.
