Chewy Turns Vet Clinics Into the New Pet Aisle
Chewy leads pet AI citations at 14% after stitching clinics, pharmacy, and insurance into answers supermarket food brands cannot buy.
Chewy holds a 14% share of pet-brand citations inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, the most of any name in 5WPR’s Pet Industry AI Visibility Index 2026. The April ranking ran more than 60 owner prompts across food, retail, insurance, services, and pet tech, and it credits Chewy’s pharmacy, telehealth, insurance, and new veterinary clinics for covering almost every query a pet owner types.
The Farmer’s Dog is second at 9%, the default answer on fresh dog food. Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Royal Canin still own the vet-recommended food prompts. Pedigree, Iams, Beneful, and the other supermarket bags that once filled the aisle now show up mainly when someone asks for the cheapest option.
Chewy Takes 14% of Pet AI Citations
5WPR, the New York communications firm, published the index in April 2026 after scoring 25 brands on estimated citation share in Q1 2026. The test set was 60-plus pet-owner prompts across six categories, including “best dog food for senior dogs,” “where to buy pet prescriptions online,” “Hill’s vs Royal Canin prescription diet,” and “best pet insurance for French bulldogs.”
Share is the share of brand mentions across that mix, not a food-only score and not a clinical ranking. About 29% of citations sat with ranks 16 through 25 and with names that did not make the list. Chewy’s own catalog, roughly 4,000 partner brands and 190,000 products and services, is only part of why it leads. The index also counts Chewy Pharmacy and compounding, Connect With a Vet telehealth, CarePlus insurance sold with Trupanion and Lemonade, and Chewy Vet Care clinics.
That is a retailer being named on food, refill, insurance, and “where do I take the dog” prompts in one brand. No other pet company in the study is cited across that many surfaces.
HOW THE APRIL INDEX RANKED THE CATEGORY
| Rank | Brand | Category | What the models use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chewy | Retail | Default store, pharmacy, telehealth, insurance, clinics |
| 2 | The Farmer’s Dog | Fresh food | Default “best fresh dog food” answer |
| 3 | Hill’s Science Diet | Traditional food | Vet-recommended and prescription diets |
| 4 | Purina Pro Plan | Traditional food | Performance nutrition and prescription diets |
| 5 | Royal Canin | Traditional food | Breed-specific and prescription diets |
| 6 | Blue Buffalo | Traditional food | Premium “natural” kibble, adjacent to the vet trio |
| 7 | Amazon | Retail | Chewy alternative on shopping prompts |
| 8 | Petco | Retail | In-store care and a distant second omnichannel name |
| 9 | Rover | Services | Dog walking and sitting, almost uncontested |
| 10 | Trupanion | Insurance | Direct vet pay across 50 states |
PetSmart, which still runs more than 1,500 North American stores, sits at 19. Whisker owns automatic litter boxes at 25. Pedigree and Iams do not appear in the 25 at all.
The Clinic Purchase Is a Prompt-Coverage Play
On April 8, 2026, Chewy said it would acquire Modern Animal and its 29 clinics, a membership vet chain with 24/7 virtual care and more than 100,000 member families. The company said the buy would add more than $125 million in annualized run-rate revenue and grow Chewy Vet Care from 18 to 47 locations at a stroke.
Modern Animal perfectly complements our strategy to become the preeminent end-to-end pet health ecosystem, utilizing both owned and asset-light models. We are acquiring a high-growth platform with positive 4-wall EBITDA at the clinic level, a best-in-class operating engine, and over 100,000 member families.
Sumit Singh, CEO, Chewy, April 8, 2026 announcement
5WPR called that closing the year’s biggest citation event in the category, because “where should I take my dog for routine care” starts returning Chewy as Modern Animal is folded in. The models already named Chewy for prescriptions and online vet chat. Physical clinics extend the same name into a query that used to belong to whoever the owner already knew down the street.
THE MODERN ANIMAL CLOCK
- April 8, 2026: Chewy agrees to buy Modern Animal, adding 29 clinics to 18 Chewy Vet Care sites for a combined 47.
- April 23, 2026: Chewy’s clinic deck tells investors it wants about 60 sites by the end of fiscal 2026, with Modern Animal dense in Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
- May 21, 2026: The deal closes. Chewy’s later 10-Q lists a $399.8 million purchase price, $378.0 million in cash net of cash acquired, and $221.6 million of goodwill.
- September 9, 2026: Chewy reports fiscal second-quarter results and says Modern Animal performed ahead of the plan baked into guidance.
Investors still argue the clinics as a customer-acquisition bet, because Chewy says about 40% of Chewy Vet Care clients are new to the retailer and spend about $900 in year one, roughly five times a typical Chewy customer. The index is doing different math. It is counting how often the Chewy name is an acceptable answer, not how much those visits add to a $3.33 billion quarter.
Why Vets Still Decide Which Kibble AI Names
Hill’s, Purina Pro Plan, and Royal Canin sit third through fifth because the models copy the same authorities vets copy. 5WPR traces those citations to veterinary-school nutrition curricula, prescription-diet distribution, and clinic dispensing, then to the editorial layer that repeats those names, from veterinary college pages and AAHA material to PetMD and review sites.
The report’s line is blunt enough to quote: new brands cannot buy their way onto that surface. Blue Buffalo, the General Mills brand, earned adjacency with a decade of “natural” positioning and a 2025 fresh line aimed at the DTC leaders, but not parity. Orijen and Acana hold a high-protein niche. Everyone else is fighting over leftover mentions on “best food” prompts.
That is why a supermarket endcap no longer maps to an AI answer. The training and retrieval stack is reading clinics and curricula, not the pet aisle at Walmart. Hill’s parent is Colgate-Palmolive, Purina Pro Plan sits inside Nestlé Purina, and Royal Canin sits inside Mars Petcare, three firms that spent years inside exam rooms. The models are repeating that history.
A separate 5W veterinary index, run on 65-plus care prompts in the same Q1 2026 window, found the same gravity on the clinic side. Banfield Pet Hospital took 11.5% of veterinary citations, VCA 10%, and BluePearl 6%, a 27% to 30% combined share for Mars Petcare’s hospital brands, while about 80% of independent practices had zero citation share in their own metro. Chewy’s clinic push is an attempt to put a fourth consumer brand on a surface those three hospital names already occupy.
Grocery Aisle Brands Shrink to Price Queries
The brands that built the 1990s and 2010s supermarket run are the ones falling out of the answer box. 5WPR lists six names that once owned Petco and PetSmart shelf sets and now lose share “at an alarming rate,” even on “affordable dog food,” unless the prompt is explicitly about price, in which case the models often add a nutrition caution.
NAMES THE MODELS NOW TREAT AS PRICE PROMPTS
- Pedigree: Mars’s mass-market dog food, absent from the top 25, cited when the user asks for the cheapest bag.
- Iams: Mid-tier dog and cat food from the same parent, also off the ranked list in this index.
- Beneful: A Nestlé Purina sub-brand that the firm’s other research flags as weakly cited next to Pro Plan.
- Kibbles ‘n Bits: A former aisle staple that now appears, when it appears, on bargain queries.
- Alpo: Another legacy wet and dry line pushed into the same price bucket.
- Rachael Ray Nutrish: Celebrity-branded kibble that 5WPR groups with the same decline.
A category that minted billions a decade ago is becoming invisible for every prompt except the one that starts with “cheap.” Advertising spend does not repair that, because the citation sources 5WPR tracked, from AVMA pages to Reddit’s r/dogs and r/puppy101, do not treat those bags as a serious answer to “what should I feed.”
Mars’s problem is fragmentation. Royal Canin holds rank 5 on breed-specific and prescription queries, while Pedigree, Iams, Nutro, Cesar, and Whiskas, all in the same corporate portfolio, do not crack the upper tier of this index. Scale in the warehouse does not add up to scale in the answer.
PetSmart’s Stores Rank 19th in the Index
PetSmart’s problem is the spinoff. 5WPR notes that the chain still has one of the largest physical footprints in the business, more than 1,500 stores, and still ranks a small fraction of Chewy’s citation share. After PetSmart separated Chewy as a public company, shopping and advice prompts in the test set went to Chewy first, then Amazon, then Petco. PetSmart landed 19th, behind Fi the smart-collar brand and even behind Nom Nom and Ollie.
Banfield hospitals inside some PetSmart stores help on narrow local-care queries, the report says, but they do not lift the PetSmart name on “what should I buy.” Petco, which kept in-store Vetco partnerships, at least shows up at rank 8. Tractor Supply was in the retail set and did not make the top 25.
The pattern is ugly for anyone whose advantage was square footage. Models cannot walk a store. They can read Chewy’s product pages, Be Chewy and PetMD explainers, insurer roundups, and now clinic locations under one string, Chewy. A 1,500-store map does not survive that compression unless the brand also publishes the pages the engines retrieve.
The Farmer’s Dog Owns Fresh Food Answers
The Farmer’s Dog is the other winner, and it won on a narrower field. 5WPR says the brand is the default on “best fresh dog food” almost across the board, with $1.2 billion in annualized net revenue as of early 2024 and more than $10 million in monthly profit while staying private. Freshpet, the listed refrigerated brand, posted $975 million in 2024 net sales and ranks 14th, the retail-fresh name rather than the AI-fresh name.
The citation base, per the report, is heavy brand advertising, veterinary-adjacent write-ups, and a subscription funnel that produces first-party reviews at scale. Ollie, Nom Nom, Sundays for Dogs, JustFoodForDogs, and A Pup Above compete in the same fridge and still do not take the top prompt. 5WPR’s comparison is to a category-defining app that later rivals never unseat: the second brand can live, it just does not become the answer.
That split matters for how to read Chewy’s 14%. Chewy is not beating Hill’s at being vet food, and it is not beating The Farmer’s Dog at being fresh food. It is being named when the prompt is a shopping, refill, insurance, or care question that used to scatter across five companies. The food specialists keep their lanes. The retailer that bolted lanes together keeps the intersection.
A $399.8 Million Clinic Buy Barely Moves Quarterly Sales
Fiscal second-quarter results, released September 9, 2026 for the period ended August 2, 2026, show how small the clinics still are on the income statement. Net sales were $3.33 billion, up 7.3% from a year earlier, or 5.7% if SmartPak and Modern Animal are stripped out. Active customers were 21.7 million. In June, Chewy had guided about $70 million of 2026 net sales from Modern Animal against a full-year sales range later lifted into the mid-$13 billions. The clinics can be “ahead of plan” and still round into noise next to Autoship bags of kibble.
Chewy’s April 23 clinic deck is more ambitious about unit economics than about near-term mix. Mature Modern Animal sites, it says, run about twice industry revenue per location, with EBITDA margins above 20% at maturity. Chewy Vet Care’s own target is target $3.5 million in clinic revenue against an industry band of $1.5 million to $2.5 million, plus a 15% to 20% lift in net sales per active customer after a first clinic visit. Combined clinics were aimed at about 60 by the end of fiscal 2026, with about $290 million of embedded revenue at steady state.
CLINIC MATH VERSUS THE P&L
- Cash out the door: $399.8 million to buy Modern Animal, more than half of it booked as goodwill.
- Revenue in the door: more than $125 million run-rate at announcement, about $70 million of 2026 sales in the June guide.
- Customer overlap: about 40% of Chewy Vet Care clients are new to Chewy, which is why the company talks clinics as a funnel.
- Citation overlap: 5WPR already treats the 47-clinic map as coverage on care prompts Chewy did not own when it was only a warehouse.
The mismatch is the point people arguing about pet healthcare TAM keep missing. A 47-clinic chain does not have to move a $3.33 billion quarter to change what ChatGPT says when a new puppy owner types a question at 11 p.m. It has to exist, publish, and share a brand string with the pharmacy and the food reorder. 5WPR’s warning in the same April report was that brands that skip that work in 2026 will not be cited in 2028.
Chewy is now the cited name on the intersection of those prompts, with a clinic group that still barely shows up in net sales. Pedigree still sits on the shelf. The shelf is no longer where the question gets answered.
