Cayman and QCAD Used Canada Crypto Week as a Shop Window
Canada Crypto Week 2026 packed Rebel with banks, Cayman and Hong Kong pitches, and QCAD’s official badge, then the founder stepped back as lead.
Canada Crypto Week ran July 20 to 26, 2026, and the rooms that mattered were not the ones on the public poster. Cayman Finance poured rum in the VIP cabana, Invest Hong Kong sent its Canada head, and Stablecorp’s QCAD wore the official stablecoin badge while banks, law firms, and compliance shops filled the stages at Rebel Entertainment Complex and Cabana Pool Bar.
The sixth edition of the week wrapped around the ninth Blockchain Futurist Conference on July 21 and 22. After the recap video landed, founder Tracy Leparulo said Toronto 2026 was her last Futurist as lead organizer.
The Sixth Week Ran Through Rebel and Cabana
Canada Crypto Week is the umbrella. Futurist is the paid hub. The week billed more than 50 independent events, conferences, meetups, and classes, with Web3TO opening the calendar on July 20. Official recap copy put thousands of people through the waterfront rooms and pointed to a festival layout: three stages, an outdoor cabana, live robots, and crypto payments on site from EukaPay.
Pre-event materials also listed an NFT gallery with 50 displays from more than 100 artists, plus Play-to-Earn races, a VR bay, and blockchain voting. Side programming kept the NFT and community brands on the map, from Pudgy Penguins and a Bored Ape meetup to Doginal Dogs and Solana’s lounge. The earlier Canada Crypto Week briefing had already flagged two additions that set the tone for the floor: Agentic Day and an invite-only Compliance Breakfast.
THE WEEK ON THE GROUND
- July 20, 2026: Web3TO Toronto Conference opens Canada Crypto Week.
- July 21, 2026: Futurist day one at Rebel and Cabana; Agentic Day by Hello Agentic; inaugural Cayman-Canada Summit; Cayman Finance rum bar opens in the VIP cabana.
- July 22, 2026: Futurist day two; Compliance Breakfast with VerifyVASP, Inca Digital, XReg Consulting, Crystal Intelligence, and Cloudburst Technologies.
- July 21 to 22, 2026: ETHToronto, the fifth ETHWomen, SheFi, and House of Intelligence programming sit on or beside the main site.
- July 27, 2026: Untraceable posts the Toronto recap and points to Futurist Florida on November 17 and 18.
The official wrap is on the conference channel, and it is the cleanest public record of what the floor looked like.

Cayman, Hong Kong, and the BVI Came to Sell Jurisdiction
Cayman Finance did not buy a booth and hope. It ran a two-day rum bar for VIP pass holders, with steel drums and a tropical set inside the cabana, and it put Haymond Rankin, associate director for banking, fintech, and virtual assets, on the speaker list. The same week it partnered with Blockchain North on the first Cayman-Canada Summit, a curated, approval-based room on July 21 for capital, structuring, governance, treasury, and cross-border work. Cayman Enterprise City, the Blockchain Association of the Cayman Islands, DM Financial, Hash Directors, and ShoreLabs sat on that invite.
Hong Kong’s pitch was quieter and just as direct. Christopher Chen, head of Invest Hong Kong Canada, was on the Futurist roster, matching the week’s listed workshop that billed Hong Kong as a global hub for digital assets. The British Virgin Islands showed up too. Elise Donovan, CEO of BVI Finance, shared the bill with Kishelle Blaize Cameron of the BVI Financial Services Commission. Cayman counsel from Maples and Carey Olsen, plus ShoreLabs SEZC, rounded out a corridor of offshore names that had little to do with card-game nights.
WHO RENTED THE PRIVATE ROOMS
- Cayman Finance: VIP rum bar on July 21 and 22, plus Rankin on the main speaker list.
- Cayman-Canada Summit: Invite-only session on July 21 with Blockchain North, Cayman Enterprise City, and BACI.
- Invest Hong Kong: Workshop on the week’s slate and Chen on the Futurist stage.
- BVI Finance and the BVI commission: Donovan and Cameron on the published roster.
- Compliance Breakfast: VerifyVASP’s Amanda Wick, XReg’s Nicky Gomez, and Cloudburst’s Michael O’Connor among the hosts on July 22.
That mix is the product. A Canadian week that still prints ape and penguin side events now sells fund formation, VASP licensing chat, and a path to another country’s rulebook. Canadian advocacy groups on the same floor kept repeating a plainer worry, that the country trains founders and then watches them leave for San Francisco. The Cayman room is one answer to that leak. It is not a community meetup.
QCAD Wore the Official Badge on a Thin Market
Stablecorp and QCAD joined as a leading sponsor and the Official Stablecoin Partner of Canada Crypto Week. CEO Kesem Frank and COO Ahad Ahmed were both on the Futurist list. On March 23, 2026, Deloitte Canada said it would take QCAD rails for Canadian banks, with work aimed at collateral that moves at any hour, inter-bank clearing, cross-border transfers, and on-chain treasury. Soumak Chatterjee, Deloitte Canada’s financial services and payments leader, said stablecoins give the country’s payments stack a real opening. Frank said the Canadian digital dollar only works if people trust the reserve and the rails they already use.
The listing does not yet match the badge. Coinbase’s QCAD page on September 13, 2026 showed a price of CA$1.00, a circulating supply of 1.8 million tokens, and a QCAD market cap on Coinbase of CA$1.77 million, with 24-hour volume of CA$174.35 and an all-time high of CA$1.02. Tetra Digital Group, whose founder Didier Lavallée also spoke in Toronto, has been pushing a rival Canadian-dollar token, CADD, across Ethereum, Base, and Tempo. Two CAD coins were in the building. Neither is a household payments rail.
They are racing a statute that is already on the books. Bill C-15 received Royal Assent on March 26, 2026 and enacted the Stablecoin Act. The federal Stablecoin Act framework puts non-bank issuers under the Bank of Canada, demands 1:1 high-quality reserves in the reference currency, at-par redemption, and a public redemption policy, and bars interest or yield. Draft regulations are still being written. Finance Canada has said that work runs 12 to 18 months from early 2026, with the framework due in force in 2027.
HOW THE NEW CAD COINS SIT AGAINST THE ACT
| Piece | Who backs it | Where it stood in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| QCAD | Stablecorp, with Deloitte as a bank-facing partner | Official week sponsor; Coinbase listing at CA$1.77 million on September 13 |
| CADD | Tetra Digital Group / CAD Digital | Issued across Ethereum, Base, and Tempo; pitched as payments kit, not agent hype |
| Stablecoin Act | Bank of Canada for non-bank issuers | Law as of March 26, 2026; operating rules aimed at 2027 |
Banks sit outside that registry on purpose. Federal, provincial, and foreign financial institutions that already live under prudential rules are not the Act’s target. That split is why a rum bar full of counsel and a Deloitte slide can share a cabana with a CA$1.77 million token and both feel like the main event.
Coinbase Canada and Tetra Split the Agent Timeline
Agentic Day, presented by Hello Agentic and founder Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, was the week’s public AI product. House of Intelligence, co-hosted with House of ZK, tried to put institutions in the same sentence as autonomous software. On the floor, the argument was narrower: when, if ever, do agents pay?
Eric Richmond, country director and CEO of Coinbase Canada, put the wait in months. He said stablecoins are the money layer autonomous software can actually use, and that old payment rails cannot keep up with tools such as Claude and OpenAI’s Codex.
You can’t really have traditional rails interact in a seamless fashion with these AI agents.
Eric Richmond, CEO, Coinbase Canada, Blockchain Futurist Conference
Lavallée took the other side of the same evidence. He said the tech can work and that blockchain is a better pipe for sub-cent micropayments, then declined the rest of the pitch.
I don’t think the real use cases at scale are here. I think it’s proving out that the technology can work. Agents, in terms of payments, I think it’s buzzworthy. It gains a lot of attention, but today there’s not a tremendous amount of use cases.
Didier Lavallée, founder and CEO, Tetra Digital Group, Blockchain Futurist Conference
Richmond also said Coinbase wanted derivatives for Canadian permitted clients within weeks of the show and CIRO dealer status in early 2027. Tetra’s bet is the CAD token itself. The split is commercial, not philosophical. One firm is selling an everything-exchange that needs agents to spend. The other is selling settlement and does not want to wait on a software story that still needs a human in the loop.
Which Institutions Took the Rebel Stages?
The conference’s own site now lists a 250-plus speaker roster and 150-plus sessions, broader than the 200-speaker, 100-session counts in earlier releases. Charles Hoskinson of Input Output Group was billed as virtual. Marc Boiron of Polygon Labs, Don Tapscott of the Blockchain Research Institute, and Luca Netz of Pudgy Penguins sat nearer the marquee. The names that match the shop-window week are the banks, the market venues, and the people who write the rules.
THE FINANCE BENCH IN TORONTO
| Person | Role | Why they were in the room |
|---|---|---|
| Davies Beller | Head of digital assets, TD Securities | Bank desk on tokenized markets |
| Brian Ford | Head of business solutions and digital assets, ATB Financial | Provincial bank with a digital-asset brief |
| Elena Litani | Head of value added services, Visa Canada | Card network watching stablecoin checkout |
| Eve Lam | Executive director, Morgan Stanley | Institutional seat |
| Chaddy Huussin | Executive director, JPMorgan Chase | Same |
| Alejandra Dito | Digital assets partnerships, Mastercard | Card network on the added-speaker wave |
| Naveen Maher | Chief compliance officer, Robinhood Canada | Broker compliance, not a token launch |
| Rachel Lam-Denisov | Payments-strategy compliance, Wealthsimple | Retail platform under existing rules |
| Peyman Pardis | COO, Kraken Canada | Exchange with a Canadian entity |
| Richard Carleton | CEO, Canadian Securities Exchange | Listed-market voice; also Tetra’s non-executive chair |
| Jasraj Hallan | MP for Calgary East, Conservative shadow finance minister | Parliament on the same bill as the rum bar |
| Brad Bradford | Toronto city councillor and mayoral candidate | Host city politics |
| Roy E. Ben-Hur | Digital assets leader, Deloitte | The QCAD bank channel on stage |
| Nisrine Labcir | Innovation lead, Interac | Domestic payments incumbent |
Interac, Visa, Mastercard, and two of the big Canadian banks sharing air with VerifyVASP is the tell. The program still had BlastWheels races and a Pepe Muskoka lounge. The speaking clock went to payments, policy, and people who can say no.
Tracy Leparulo’s Last Toronto as Lead Organizer
Leparulo founded Untraceable in 2013 and built Futurist into Canada’s longest-running Web3 show. Emerald Holding bought the conference series in 2024, a deal PitchBook dates to May 7 of that year, and she announced the sale from the stage during that summer’s edition. Untraceable itself stayed hers. Co-founders Mahyar Akhbari and Laura Leparulo remain in the story she tells about the nine Toronto editions.
On July 27, quoting the recap video, she closed the Toronto chapter in public.
What a journey 💖
Following the acquisition, @futurist_conf 2026 was my final Blockchain Futurist Conference as the lead organizer ✨
For the past nine editions, this community has been such a huge part of my life. Thank you to every attendee, speaker, sponsor, partner,… https://t.co/3UxavLdory

Florida is next, November 17 to 18, 2026. The Canadian week she leaves behind is no longer a builder camp that happens to invite a bank. It is a sales floor for CAD tokens that are still small, for a Stablecoin Act that is law but not yet live, and for islands that already have a VASP playbook. The penguins and the rum can share a cabana. Only one of those is paying for the room.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did Canada Crypto Week 2026 take place?
The week ran from July 20 to 26, 2026. Extra listings and registrations sat on luma.com/canadacryptoweek, and the organizers also pointed people to CanadaCryptoWeek.com for submissions and the full grid.
What is the difference between Canada Crypto Week and Blockchain Futurist Conference?
Canada Crypto Week is the six-year-old umbrella of 50-plus independent gatherings across the country. Blockchain Futurist Conference is the nine-year-old paid flagship, now an Emerald Holding property, that occupied Rebel and Cabana on July 21 and 22 and hosted many of the week’s side activations on site.
What is QCAD and who issues it?
QCAD is a Canadian-dollar stablecoin issued by Toronto-based Stablecorp. Reserve assets sit in the QCAD Digital Trust, an Ontario trust, and the firm’s own site plus the trust’s SEDAR+ profile are the public documents for those reserves and terms.
Has Canada passed a stablecoin law?
Yes. The Stablecoin Act came in through Bill C-15 and received Royal Assent on March 26, 2026. It covers domestic and foreign non-bank issuers that make fiat-backed coins available to people in Canada, treats those issuers as money services businesses for anti-money-laundering rules, and gives the finance minister national-security powers to block or condition issuance. Banks and other prudentially regulated institutions are out of that registry on purpose.
Who acquired the Blockchain Futurist Conference?
Emerald Holding, a large B2B trade-show operator, bought the Futurist series in 2024 as an asset purchase that also covered side brands including ETHToronto, ETHWomen, and Canada Crypto Week. Leparulo has said Untraceable remains her company even after that sale.
