Galaxy Z Fold 8 Looks Like a Tablet Without a Pen

Neither the Galaxy Z Fold 8 nor the Fold 8 Ultra works with Samsung’s S Pen, two years after the company pulled the sensor layer that made the stylus possible. Samsung unveiled both phones on July 22, 2026, in London and put them on sale on August 7. The wide Fold 8 even uses a 4:3 inner screen, the first Samsung book foldable that is shaped like a small tablet.

That is the canvas older Folds sold as a notepad. On these two phones it only takes fingers, voice, and on-screen AI.

No Digitizer in Either Fold 8 Phone

Samsung’s Japanese support page, updated September 11, 2026, is blunt. The Fold 8 Ultra cannot use the S Pen, and neither can the Fold 8, the Fold 7, the original Fold, or the Fold 2. Compatible models stop at the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Fold 4, Fold 5, and Fold 6. Buying an S Pen Fold Edition or an S Pen Pro and pairing it will not change that. There is no holster and no software toggle to turn the feature on.

The Fold 8 Ultra is the tall book-style flagship. It has an 8.0-inch inner panel (2,504 x 2,256), a 6.5-inch cover, a 5,000 mAh battery, and a 200 MP main camera. Unfolded it is 158.4 x 143.2 x 4.1 mm and 215 g. Folded it is 8.9 mm thick. It starts at $2,099.99.

The Fold 8 is the new short, wide model. It has a 7.6-inch inner panel at 1,848 x 2,448, a 5.5-inch cover, a 4,800 mAh pack, and dual 50 MP cameras. Unfolded it is 123.9 x 161.4 x 4.5 mm and 201 g. Folded it is 9.7 mm. It starts at $1,899.99. Both phones use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Android 17 with One UI 9, seven years of updates, 45W wired charging, 20W wireless charging, and an IP48 rating. Peak brightness is 3,000 nits.

Samsung’s U.S. newsroom copy never mentions a stylus. It calls the Ultra Galaxy’s slimmest Z Fold design yet and a workspace for “maximum productivity.” The missing pen is an omission, not a line item.

The Wider Fold 8 Is the Tablet You Cannot Write On

The irony sits in the new shape. Samsung designed the Fold 8’s 4:3 inner screen around reading, games, and film, then left handwriting off a panel that is finally the right proportions for a page. The wider, squat Fold 8 design is the first Galaxy Fold that feels like a compact tablet in the hand, which is exactly when a pen would have earned its keep.

WHAT THE 4:3 SCREEN IS BUILT FOR

• Cover chores: The 10:16 cover is meant for messages, social feeds, and short video without opening the phone.
• Open canvas: Unfolded, the 4:3 panel is pitched for games and films that fill a squarer page than last year’s tall Fold.
• Reading mode: Rotate the same panel and Samsung says it suits articles and e-books without a second device.

None of those jobs needs a stylus. Annotating a PDF, signing a form, or sketching on a 7.6-inch page does. That is the work the Fold 6 still does with an S Pen Fold Edition and the work these two phones will not do at all.

Flex Titanium, a titanium-alloy film plus a thicker support plate, is the structure Samsung used to keep the crease shallow while cutting thickness. The Ultra is 0.1 mm thinner unfolded than the Fold 7, which was already 4.2 mm. The wide Fold 8 is Samsung’s lightest Z Fold at 201 g. The company spent the engineering budget on the hinge, the glass, and the battery mix, not on a pen sensor.

The Sensor Layer Samsung Stripped in 2025

S Pen support arrived on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021 and stayed through the Fold 6. Those phones used a dedicated digitizer under the inner display, an electromagnetic layer that powered a passive stylus with no battery and no Bluetooth. The S Pen Fold Edition had a rounded, retractable nib so a hard point would not puncture the plastic inner sheet. It never worked on the cover screen. Note and S Ultra pens use a different frequency and can pop a warning if you hold them near a Fold panel.

Samsung cut that layer on the Korea-only Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in October 2024, then on the global Fold 7, which went on sale July 25, 2025. Folded thickness fell from 12.1 mm on the Fold 6 to 8.9 mm on the Fold 7, a 3.2 mm drop. Weight fell from 239 g to 215 g. Samsung said owners who actually used the Fold stylus were few, and that pulling the layer let it thicken the ultra-thin glass and free space for a sleeker body. The Fold 8 series keeps the same choice. The Ultra matches the Fold 7’s 8.9 mm folded depth and shaves another 0.1 mm unfolded.

HOW THE PEN LEFT THE FOLD LINE

1. 2021: The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first Fold with S Pen support on the inner display, using a separate Fold Edition or S Pen Pro.
2. Fold 4, Fold 5, Fold 6: The digitizer stays. The stylus is still a case accessory, not a silo inside the hinge.
3. October 2024: The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition ships thinner, without the sensor layer.
4. July 25, 2025: The Galaxy Z Fold 7 goes global at 8.9 mm folded and 4.2 mm unfolded, with no S Pen.

A Fold 8 software update cannot restore S Pen input. The sensor is missing from the stack. That is why Apple’s Pencil plan, Honor’s Magic-Pen, and Motorola’s Moto Pen Ultra land as hardware comparisons, not as features Samsung can switch on from Seoul.

Honor, Motorola, and Apple Still Ship a Pen

Thinness was the stated reason. It is not a law of physics at 4.1 mm. Honor’s Magic V5, on sale since July 2, 2025, unfolds to 4.1 mm and folds to 8.8 mm at 217 g, and Honor advertises pen support on both screens. The Magic-Pen is a 15 g Bluetooth stylus with Type-C charging, a 140.2 mm barrel, and 4,096-level pressure and tilt writing. Honor lists it for the Magic V2, V3, V5, and V6. It is sold separately. A tap on a dark panel can wake a note sheet, which is a trick the old Fold S Pen never offered on a cover display.

Motorola’s Razr Fold undercuts the Fold 8 Ultra at $1,899 and takes the Moto Pen Ultra, a $100 active stylus that works on the cover and the inner 8.1-inch panel. Motorola often bundles the pen on its own store. The accessory charges in a USB-C case, has a shortcut button, and can fire the shutter. The Razr Fold is about a millimetre thicker than the Fold 8 Ultra. That is the trade Samsung refused to make.

Apple went the other way on September 9, 2026. Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, starts at $2,000 for 256 GB. It uses a 5.4-inch cover and a 7.6-inch inner display, the same squat family as the Fold 8. Apple said the USB-C Apple Pencil will work on both screens later in 2026, not on the October 23 on-sale date. Pre-orders open October 16. The Pencil is a separate accessory and does not live in the hinge. Even so, the first iPhone that folds is being sold with a stylus path. The eighth Galaxy Fold generation is not.

STYLUS SCORECARD ON 2026 FOLDABLES

Samsung still wins on weight and on the Ultra’s camera stack. It does not win the pen. Two Fold generations without a digitizer also mean there is no mid-cycle fix if buyers start asking for one after they see a Pencil on a 7.6-inch iPhone.

Notes Now Live on the Tab and the S26 Ultra

The S Pen did not leave Samsung. It left the Fold. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the current Samsung phone that still ships with stylus support. The Galaxy Tab S11 and Tab S11 Ultra include an S Pen that needs no charge, docks on the long edge, and keeps 4,096 pressure levels. Samsung dropped Bluetooth from that tablet pen after finding air gestures went unused. The tablet is now the clean note-taking product in the lineup. The Fold is the pocket tablet that does not write.

Won-Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s Mobile Experience division, said in February 2026 that the company was “working on a more advanced technology within S Pen to come up with a new structure of display, so the penalty of having S Pen is diminished,” and that the S Pen “will continue to be one of the core technologies.” The Fold 8 series shipped five months later without that structure. Whatever Choi was describing did not make the 2026 book foldables.

Owners who want handwriting on a Samsung foldable are left with a Fold 6, if they can still find one, or with a two-device kit: a Fold 8 for the pocket and a Tab S11 for the desk. That split is the quiet product decision inside the missing digitizer. Samsung did not kill the pen. It parked it on products that can hide the extra layer more easily than a 4.1 mm foldable.

Moon Leaves the Door Open for a Slimmer Pen

Our decisions are always shaped around the priorities that we have for that generation of foldable phones, and for this generation, our priorities were about offering foldables that were slimmer, lighter, and basically more portable devices that also offer large viewing experiences.

He added that Samsung will “explore and consider various more innovative technologies that incorporate a digitizer and S Pen in an even slimmer form factor.” A European filing published April 1, 2026, shows one path: digitizer sensing wires in the support plate that already sits under a foldable panel, including in the flexible sections. That would put the sensor in a plate Samsung is already paying for, instead of in a separate sheet. A patent is not a shipping date. It is evidence the lab has not closed the file.

Until that plate, or Choi’s new display structure, shows up in a phone you can buy, the Fold 8 series is a closed case. The wide model is the best writing surface Samsung has put on a Fold, and it has no pen. Honor kept one at 4.1 mm. Motorola kept one for $100. Apple put Pencil on its first foldable and said the software will follow later in 2026. Samsung spent the millimetres on titanium and battery chemistry, and the 4:3 page stays a finger screen.
