The push, backed by a $25 million philanthropic fund and a multi-year partnership with Canadian health AI company Signal 1, is moving tools that once lived in research papers into live clinical workflows, from head CT scan triage to emergency department staffing.

The pressure behind it is demographic. Cutting the Hours That Pile Up

The case for AI inside a hospital network gets sharper when the metric is hours. A recent AI discharge pilot at Trillium reduced discharge times by an average of 12 hours, easing pressure on the hospital and improving the experience for both patients and the care team, according to the foundation’s announcement. Separately, the discharge readiness predictor helps patients safely get home up to one day sooner than they would otherwise, freeing up beds for the next person waiting.

He and his wife Sarita committed $25 million to the effort through the foundation.

A New Hospital Built Around an Innovation Hub

Trillium’s AI push is also a construction project. The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children is a $13.9 billion build, the largest hospital project in Canadian history. The Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be Ontario’s first hospital dedicated to women’s and children’s health. The new facility is designed to stand 22 storeys tall with more than 950 beds, replacing the current Mississauga Hospital and expanding the network’s capacity.

Construction is well underway.
