Google Plants a Gemini Overlay on Windows PCs

Google released a Gemini app for Windows 10 and 11 on September 10, 2026, opened with Alt+Space. Erin Pettigrew, Director of Product Management for the Gemini App, posted the launch as a desktop overlay, not a browser tab.

That shortcut is already how Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT pop their own companion windows. Google just walked onto the same keys and brought Gmail, Drive, and its paid agent with it.

The Shortcut Everyone Already Bound

Pettigrew’s post tells people to press Alt+Space at any time to Gemini over your active work, then drop back into whatever they were doing. The pitch is a fact-check on a document or a few title ideas for a slide deck, without hunting for a tab. The company also put the client on a Windows 10 and 11 download page and called the build lightweight and quiet.

The Gemini app account posted the same overlay line the hour the blog went up.

A Windows install still does not answer the question people keep asking of Gemini, which is what the models do better than the other agents already living on the PC. The client answers a different one: how fast you can summon it. On Windows, that fight is already crowded.

WHO BINDS ALT+SPACE ON WINDOWS

Google Search got those keys first. Vinay Mahagaokar, Group Product Manager for Search, wrote in April that the Google app for desktop uses Alt+Space to find web results, local files, installed apps, and Drive documents, with screen sharing and Lens on top. Gemini is now a second Google client reaching for the same combo on the same OS.

What You Get Without a Google AI Plan

The window will look familiar if you have used Claude or ChatGPT on a desktop. A left sidebar holds chats, a search bar sits in the main pane, Notebooks group threads, and a Library stores documents and media the app has made. You can connect Google Docs and Gmail so the chat can pull from mail and files.

On a paid Google Workspace login that did not include a Gemini AI add-on, the model picker still offered Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 Flash, and 3.1 Pro, plus a toggle Google labels Extended thinking for harder problems. Image generation in the app uses Nano Banana. That is enough to draft, summarize, and make stills without buying the AI plan.

UNLOCKED ON A WORKSPACE LOGIN

• Chat models: Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 Flash, and 3.1 Pro, with an Extended thinking switch.

Video is a different gate. Gemini Omni, the video model, sits behind a Google AI subscription, and Google’s footnote on the Windows post also requires users to be 18 or older. Spark, the agent, shares that same footnote.

Gmail and Drive Open Inside the Overlay

The dedicated workspace is where Google stops pretending this is only a faster website. Pettigrew says you can hand multi-step jobs to Spark or ask Gemini to draft a project summary by pulling from Gmail and Google Drive. That is the Gemini hold on Gmail and Drive moved onto a Windows hotkey, so a Copilot PC can still live in Google’s mail and files.

Microsoft still owns the OS hooks Copilot can reach. Google owns the inbox a lot of those same people actually read. If your day already runs through Workspace, Alt+Space that opens Gemini is more useful than a Copilot pane that wants Word and Outlook. If your day runs through Microsoft 365, the reverse is true, and this app will feel like a second chat box.

Google did not claim the models run on the PC. It called the app lightweight and quiet and said more native desktop tools will roll out over time, which is a tell that this first Windows build is still a client sitting on cloud models.

Enable Spark Only With a Google AI Plan

Spark is the piece that turns the overlay into something that keeps working after you close the lid. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, the Gemini app, and AI Studio, introduced it on May 19, 2026 as a cloud agent on Gemini 3.5 that stays on Gmail, Docs, Slides, and other Workspace tools even when the laptop is shut. You can set recurring jobs, teach it skills, and ask it to turn raw notes into a Doc and a kickoff mail. Google says it asks before high-stakes steps such as spending money or sending mail.

The Windows footnote is blunt: Google AI subscription required, availability varies, 18+. The public 24/7 personal AI agent page is the product home for that agent. Omni began rolling to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra members in May. Google is making a parallel agentic Gemini bet on Pixel phones; the Windows app is the PC version of that same handoff, minus a free ride.

Gemini Ships Less Than Mac Users Already Have

Mac users have been pressing Option+Space since April 15, 2026. Michael Friedman, Group Product Manager for the Gemini App, launched that client with window sharing, including local files, so you could point Gemini at a chart and ask for the three biggest takeaways. Nano Banana and Veo sat in that first Mac build. The Mac app is listed for Gemini users 13 and older.

The July 29, 2026 Mac update went further. Long-press the Fn key and Gemini can drop cleaned dictation at the cursor, stripping ums and mid-sentence corrections. An opt-in screen-aware mode can read highlighted files or text and drop the rewrite back into the same app, the example being an executive summary with a TL;DR on top. Voice in English went global on Mac that day, with more languages promised later in 2026.

GEMINI’S PATH TO THE DESKTOP

The Windows launch post never mentions Fn-key dictation, screen-aware reasoning, or sharing a live window. Pettigrew only promises more native desktop capabilities over time. Until those land, a Mac with Gemini can see the screen and type into other apps; a Windows PC gets a summonable chat that still wants you to paste.

The Copilot Key, Now Optional

Microsoft already taught Windows users to hit Alt+Space for Copilot Quick View. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Windows app uses the same combo for its companion window and lets you change the hotkey when another program has grabbed it. Microsoft has also said the OS hands a contested shortcut to whichever app is open first or sitting in the background. Install Gemini and leave Copilot running, and the “instant” overlay becomes a race at login.

On September 10, 2026, the same day Gemini arrived, a Windows 11 Release Preview build added a setting to remap the hardware Copilot key to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key. Copilot still has Alt+Space. The dedicated key is no longer sacred. Google did not need a Copilot+ PC or an NPU mention to sit on that layer; it needed a download and two keys.

ChatGPT at least documents a settings toggle when the shortcut collides. Google’s Windows post does not. Power users who already bound Alt+Space to Copilot, ChatGPT, or the Google Search desktop app will find out which client won the moment they press the keys.
