Guild Wars 3 Hits PS5 as ArenaNet Splits the Series
ArenaNet is building Guild Wars 3 for PC and PS5 as a smaller action MMO beside Guild Wars 2, with a fall 2027 beta.
ArenaNet will put Guild Wars 3 on PC and PlayStation 5, the series’ first console release, with a public beta scheduled for fall 2027. There is still no launch date, and no Xbox version has been announced.
A closed Gamescom demo in early September showed why that console slot is doing more than adding a platform, because the new movement system already caps large fights at about 20 players so the action stays readable. That choice is how the Bellevue studio keeps Guild Wars 2’s giant battles in one game and builds a different MMO in another.
Guild Wars 3 Lands on PC and PS5
Colin Johanson, ArenaNet studio head and Guild Wars 3 game director, unveiled the game at Summer Game Fest on June 5, 2026. It is the studio’s first new title since Guild Wars 2 in 2012, a 14-year gap, and the first time any Guild Wars game has been built for a home console.
Steam lists the release as to be announced and names ArenaNet as developer and publisher. The store page already carries a 65 GB install size and Windows 10 64-bit as the floor. Players can wishlist it there and on the PlayStation Store, and the studio is taking newsletter sign-ups for a shot at the fall 2027 beta.
Johanson’s on-stage line was that the game should “usher in an entirely new type of MMO experience.” The debut trailer and setting details spend more time on cliffs, gliding, and a spirit mount than on a skill bar, which is the point.
A Thousand Years Before the First War
The new game is set more than a thousand years before the original Guild Wars, in the Tyrian region of Orr, while that land is still a wild frontier rather than the cursed ruin Guild Wars 2 players know. Rival guilds fight over how to protect or strip the country, and the player joins the Vaelwardens, a guild sworn to the land, the people beyond the city walls, and the nature spirits called Vael.
Every character rides a Seeker, a Vael spirit that is both a mount and a link to Orr’s magic. Johanson has described the era as high fantasy and low tech, which lets the studio throw new players into Tyria without a 21-year lore exam. Later Steam posts promised more on the Six Gods and the capital, Arah, and a July 23, 2026 post framed the Vaelwardens as the oldest guild in Orr, already close to collapse.
The Gamescom slice pushed that clock even further into myth. Combat designer Kevin Stocker ran the demo through a ruined temple of Dhuum, in a time when Grenth has only just taken his place, so the map is still littered with wrecked shrines and holdouts who want the old god back. Veterans get a familiar country; everyone else gets a wilderness that does not assume they finished Eye of the North.
Why ArenaNet Split the Franchise in Three
The quieter half of the June reveal was a promise that Guild Wars 3 would not eat its older siblings. Johanson, Guild Wars 2 game director Josh Davis, and Guild Wars Reforged game director Stephen Clarke-Willson went on camera the next day and said the studio would keep building all three games. Johanson’s line in that video was blunt: “We are not replacing your favorite games.”
He was answering a scar the studio still owns. When Guild Wars 2 shipped, most of ArenaNet moved with it and the original game slipped into maintenance, which he now says cost them the chance to keep exploring that older design. If they were repeating 2012, he said, Guild Wars 2 work would have stopped more than a year before the new announcement. Instead the plan is three live titles on three timelines, each meant to feel like a different kind of online game.
THE GUILD WARS SPLIT
- June 5, 2026: ArenaNet reveals Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest for PC and PlayStation 5, with a fall 2027 beta.
- June 6, 2026: Johanson, Davis, and Clarke-Willson commit to running Guild Wars Reforged, Guild Wars 2, and Guild Wars 3 at the same time.
- June 16, 2026: Johanson publishes the four design rules for the new game, including buy-to-play and a mid-scale combat target.
- Early September 2026: A hands-off Gamescom demo shows momentum combat and a large-fight cap of about 20 players.
- September 15, 2026: Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity is scheduled to close, after which Davis’s team turns to foundation work rather than a new expansion.
That split is the actual product plan. Guild Wars Reforged stays a small-team, mostly instanced game. Guild Wars 2 keeps map-wide metas, megaserver crowds, and World vs. World. Guild Wars 3 is being aimed at the space between those poles, which is also the scale at which a DualSense-friendly action game can still be read in a fight.
Guild Wars 3 lands near the middle of the MMO spectrum, which supports the goals we have for our movement and combat systems. While it fits the definition of an MMORPG significantly more than Guild Wars Reforged does, it doesn’t try to replicate the large-scale gameplay pillars that so uniquely define Guild Wars 2. This ensures that all three of our games can coexist as different experiences on different timelines, telling different stories about the world of Tyria.
Colin Johanson, ArenaNet studio head, Guild Wars 3 philosophy post
He was even more direct in later interviews: if the studio is going to make another game, it should not be Guild Wars 2 again. The numbered sequel is a new design on purpose, not a coat of paint on the 2012 combat loop.
About 20 Players Is the Combat Cap
Johanson and Stocker started from a Guild Wars 2-style movement kit, then found the interesting fights were the ones that kept glide speed, wall-run speed, and fall speed inside the attack itself. Stocker called the wall-run slam and the attacks out of gliding the pieces that made the system click. In the demo, a Warrior’s aerial hits grew in damage and radius with how far and how fast he fell, so running up a cliff and dropping on a target was the rotation, not a cutscene.
The same slice showed group play that is closer to an action game than a tab-target raid. A Warrior braced a shield as a springboard so a Necromancer could vault off it and come down with a scythe. Stocker’s Warrior kicked an enemy into a wall for extra damage, then later into a drop. Spider webs slowed both movement and swings until fire burned them off, which also freed a wrapped ally. Conditions were staged as physical facts on the body, not only as icons in a buff bar.
The Gamescom build put three professions on screen: Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger, each using the same movement verbs in a different way. Stocker said Warriors want to stay close and slam down, while the Ranger leans on hanging aerial hits. Johanson said roles will be more clearly drawn than they were in Guild Wars 2, closer to a tank, healer, and damage split, because the smaller fights need people who can actually hold a job.
HOW THE THREE GAMES DIFFER
| Game | Place on the timeline | Fight scale ArenaNet is selling | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars Reforged | Original Guild Wars era | Small party, mostly instanced | PC |
| Guild Wars 2 | 2012 to now | Map-wide metas and giant PvP | PC |
| Guild Wars 3 | More than a thousand years before Guild Wars | About 20 players in a large fight | PC and PlayStation 5 |
Johanson put the cap in plain numbers. At most, out in the open world, you would probably see about 20 players in a large combat scenario, he said, because past that point the high-fidelity movement and combat stop being visible. Around 20 players is the sweet spot; anything beyond that and the combat does not hold up as well. You can play alone and bump into people, or stack groups, but the really large scale stays what Guild Wars 2 is about, and he said the studio wants to keep supporting that game for decades.
That is also why World vs. World is not on the Guild Wars 3 plan. Large-scale PvP is being treated as a Guild Wars 2 pillar, not a feature to clone. Some form of smaller PvP is still in the works, with modes not locked. Cities can still feel crowded; the open world is being phased so a pretty vista does not turn into an unreadable blob. Base groups were described in the demo talks as starting at four, with raids on the list for later, all still under that about 20 players ceiling for a big encounter.
Stocker was honest about why so few online games attempt this. Getting action combat to feel good with other people in the instance is a hard technical problem, he said, which is a large part of why the genre still leans on huge ability bars. ArenaNet is betting a DualSense and a mouse can share the same language if the verbs are run, slide, leap, wall-run, and hit on the way down.
No Subscription and No Battle Pass
Eleven days after the trailer, Johanson put the commercial rules in writing. Guild Wars 3 will be buy-to-play at release. There will be no subscription fee. He went further and treated paid battle passes and paid seasonal tracks as a subscription with better branding, which he said is not how a Guild Wars game should hold a player’s time.
THE FOUR RULES JOHANSON PUT ON PAPER
- Buy-to-play: Players buy the game and come back when they want, including after a long break for an expansion.
- No extra drip fee: The studio is promising no monthly fees and no battle pass on top of that purchase.
- No pay-to-win: Cash can buy looks, account services, and convenience, not a power edge over someone who spent time instead of money.
- A new Hall of Monuments: Guild Wars 2 accounts will carry rewards into Guild Wars 3 as credit for years already played.
He framed the whole list as a 21-year studio habit that started when Guild Wars launched in 2005 without a monthly bill. The new wrinkle is the battle-pass era, which he argues turned “optional” tracks into another way to make people feel late if they skip a month. “We don’t want to keep people hostage,” he said later, and he wants people to return because they like the game, not because a pass is about to expire.
Horizontal gear is meant to survive the jump. Once you have top-tier equipment, it is supposed to stay top-tier, with the chase moving to looks, account rewards, and new things to do, the same bet Guild Wars 2 has made for years. That is easy to print and hard to ship, and nobody outside ArenaNet has played an economy that proves it yet.
Guild Wars 2 Pauses Expansions After September
The cost of the split lands on the game that is still paying the bills. NCSoft’s Guild Wars 2 quarterly revenue table puts the title at KRW 32,625 million for the first quarter of 2026, after Visions of Eternity landed in late 2025. That is a healthy live MMO, not a dead one being put out to pasture, which is why the next year of scheduling is going to sting for people who buy every expansion on day one.
Visions of Eternity is scheduled to finish on September 15, 2026 with the Leyspring Hollows map, then a staggered raid, fractal, and Convergence drop in the weeks after. Davis said there will not be a new Guild Wars 2 expansion in the next stretch of development, because trying to build one in parallel with a Guild Wars 3 launch would leave both games thin. Annual expansions are the target again once the new game is out; they are not the plan for the year in between.
WHAT GUILD WARS 2 GETS INSTEAD
- Foundation year: After September 15, 2026, Davis’s team is spending nearly a full year of foundation work walking back through each era of the game.
- Hall of Monuments 2.0: The first link to Guild Wars 3 is due later in 2026, rolled out in stages across old expansion regions.
- Older fights: Named work includes a pass on the Zhaitan encounter in the personal story, plus performance and a physics-based rendering upgrade.
- Player list: ArenaNet opened a quality-of-life forum and asked the live community what to fix while the expansion machine is off.
Johanson put the franchise around 24 to 26 million players when he was asked, in Cologne, why the sequel still carries the Guild Wars 3 name instead of a fresh label that might be easier to sell on PlayStation. The number is his, not a live concurrent count, but it explains the branding. The studio would rather drag a 14-year-old PC audience onto PS5, and a new console audience back onto Steam, than start a fourth mythology from zero.
Fall 2027 Is the First Public Test
Everything above is still a studio talking. The only people who have seen Guild Wars 3 move are press and creators in a closed Gamescom room, with no recording, and a 15- to 20-minute slice piloted by Johanson and Stocker. On September 11, 2026, the official Guild Wars 3 account posted a recap of those conversations and pointed to a YouTube playlist of the same interviews, which is useful color and a poor substitute for the combat those people actually watched.
Thanks to everyone who joined us at Gamescom for an early look at #GuildWars3. We've put together some of the reactions and conversations from those who attended.

Players who could not get to Cologne are still waiting on footage of wall-runs that feed a sword swing, and a reaction montage does not close that gap. Wishlist pages and a newsletter for the fall 2027 beta are the whole public loop until ArenaNet decides the alpha is stable enough to show. Pricing, day-one expansion plans, and whether Xbox ever joins the party remain unsaid.
Between now and that beta, Guild Wars 2 still has a finale to ship on September 15, 2026, then a year of repairs, while Guild Wars 3 has to prove that about 20 players, a Seeker, and a controller-native combat system can carry a numbered sequel. The series is finally going to PlayStation. The fight size is the part that will decide whether that was a port, or a different game with the same last name.
