Huawei’s Nova 16 SE Leak Shows Its Chip Bet Paying Off
Leaked Kirin 8020 and 8500mAh battery specs for Huawei’s Nova 16 SE suggest its sanctions-era chip strategy now runs at full production scale.
Huawei is preparing to launch the Nova 16 SE next month, and leaked specifications point to a Kirin 8020 chipset, an 8500mAh battery and a 1.5K LTPS OLED display. Huawei has not confirmed any of it yet.

Benchmark trackers have linked it to the Kirin 9020, the chip powering this year’s mainline Nova 16 series, which launched June 1, 2026, describing the two as built from closely related silicon. That pattern, a shared design spread across a flagship-adjacent chip and a budget one, only works at scale if the fab behind it is producing far more than a single premium model needs.
SMIC’s 7-Nanometer Output Is Climbing Fast
That is exactly what industry data shows happening. A semiconductor analysis newsletter estimated SMIC’s 7-nanometer-and-below capacity climbing from 45,000 wafers a month at the end of 2025 to 60,000 this year and 80,000 by 2027. Huawei is also building fabs of its own outside the reach of export controls and working with SMIC on process technology, which could push real output even higher.
Mobile World Live reported, citing Taiwan’s Economic Daily, that Huawei is preparing to move a 3-nanometer, gate-all-around chip design to SMIC sometime this year. If that holds, it frees the current 7-nanometer line for exactly what appears to be happening now: pushing older flagship silicon down into cheaper phones instead of retiring it.
Huawei’s China Market Share Hits a Multiyear High
The timing lines up with Huawei’s sales numbers. China’s smartphone shipments fell 4% year over year in the first quarter of 2026 as memory shortages pushed up costs across the industry, according to Counterpoint Research. Huawei still posted its highest share of the Chinese market in five years, with unit shipments climbing from 13 million to 13.9 million year over year, putting it ahead of Apple’s 21% share in the same quarter.
The momentum held into the next quarter. Preliminary Counterpoint data reported in early Q3 put Huawei’s Q2 2026 China share at 23%, its highest since late 2020, even as the overall market shrank another 2%. Huawei’s Mate 80 line contributed to that run, with the standard Mate 80 outselling the pricier Pro Max through the first half of 2026. A chip strategy that started as a sanctions workaround now looks like it is running at full-line volume rather than boutique scale.

Honor, spun off from Huawei’s device business in 2020, is not tied to domestic silicon and can freely use MediaTek’s chip instead.
