Battlefield 6’s Top Gun Crossover Breaks the Promise DICE Made by Name
Battlefield 6’s August 18 Top Gun crossover lands months after designers vowed no Nicki Minaj style skins, and as its Steam player count slides 95%.
Electronic Arts confirmed Top Gun is joining Battlefield 6 on August 18, adding F-14 Tomcats and three voice acted movie characters to the shooter. It is the first outside franchise to cross into the series since Battlefield 6 launched in October 2025.
A year earlier, the game’s own designers said this was exactly what Battlefield would never do, and they used Nicki Minaj as the example.
A Grounded Shooter Gets an F-14 and Three Movie Stars
In a joint statement, Electronic Arts and Paramount Games Studio detailed a meticulously crafted knockout Top Gun crossover arriving inside Season 4’s second phase. Three Top Gun: Maverick actors are reprising their roles with full voice work: Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Lewis Pullman as Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd, and Charles Parnell as Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates.
| Season 4 Phase | Release Date | What Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Pacific Front | July 21, 2026 | Tsuru Reef map, Dynamic Wave System, CB90 and RHIB boats |
| Phase 2: Top Gun | August 18, 2026 | F-14 Tomcat, F/A-18 Super Hornet, Wake Island’s return, Carrier Strike mode |
| Phase 3: Tidal Strike | September 15, 2026 | Season ending collection event tied to naval contracts |
Phase 2 also folds Wake Island back into rotation and introduces Carrier Strike, a mode built around sinking or defending an aircraft carrier. Battlefield REDSEC, the franchise’s free to play spinoff, gets its own jets only Gauntlet mission and a new aircraft carrier point of interest.
Battlefield’s official account previewed the news with the weekend post teasing wingmen and the date, telling fans to “tag your WSO”, aviator slang for the backseat weapons officer that Goose and Rooster have played across the film franchise. “Season 4 is our biggest update yet and is the perfect opportunity for players old and new to dive in,” said Byron Beede, general manager of Battlefield. Executive producer Ryan McArthur said “Battlefield’s unmatched sense of scale is the perfect way to bring Top Gun’s iconic and cinematic aerial combat to life.”

The Nicki Minaj Line
Before Battlefield 6 launched, its designers spent months distancing the game from Call of Duty’s celebrity crossovers, often reaching for the same name to make the point.
“I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.”
Shashank Uchil, Battlefield 6’s design director, made that promise in 2025 remarks that promised a grounded identity free of celebrity crossovers. He wasn’t alone.
- Matthew Nickerson, senior console combat designer: “We’re not chasing trends. We’re not chasing other products,” he told IGN in 2025.
- Alexia Christofi, a DICE producer, said what mattered most was that “things feel grounded,” in comments given to Comic Book Review.
- Buhl, a Battlefield Studios developer, contrasted the approach with rivals: “We’re pretty happy with where we are. We are a gritty, grounded, realistic shooter.”
Call of Duty had spent the prior years adding Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg and cartoon characters as playable skins, the exact path Battlefield’s team held up as what it wouldn’t do. “Despite multiple promises to avoid those sorts of crossovers, Battlefield is in fact moving in that direction,” gaming outlet ComicBook wrote after the Top Gun reveal.
Is EA Leaning on Top Gun Because Battlefield 6 Is Slipping?
EA has never said so directly. Steam data tells a harder story: Battlefield 6’s concurrent player count on that platform peaked at 747,440 during its October 2025 launch weekend, then fell nearly 95% from its Steam peak by the following summer, and the Top Gun update lands as the studio’s biggest single content bet since launch.
That decline covers only Steam, the one platform where numbers are public. EA has not released cross platform totals for PS5 and Xbox. Total sales tell a rosier story: Battlefield 6 and REDSEC had sold over 7 million copies in three days, EA said at launch, and analytics firm Alinea Analytics later put combined lifetime sales near 26 million. The season also lands months after EA laid off an undisclosed number of Battlefield developers and closed a roughly 55 billion dollar buyout that took the company private, ending the quarterly earnings scrutiny it faced as a public studio.
- 747,440 concurrent Steam players at October 2025 launch, an all time high for the franchise.
- Roughly 37,000 concurrent players on Steam by mid-2026, about a 95% drop from that peak.
- 26 million combined copies sold across Battlefield 6 and REDSEC, per Alinea Analytics.
- $8.03 billion in EA net bookings for fiscal 2026, a company record partly credited to Battlefield 6.
Fans Split Between Closest Fit and Slippery Slope
Players split into two camps within hours of the reveal. One Reddit user argued that “if we’re going to collab with things, Top Gun is pretty close to Battlefield,” framing the film as the least objectionable outside property the series could have picked.
Others weren’t as forgiving of the principle. “This is a slippery slope,” one user wrote on X, warning the move could open the door to further crossovers, ComicBook reported. That outlet’s own coverage raised the fear directly: if Top Gun succeeds, could Rambo or G.I. Joe follow, franchises with far less business inside a shooter built around real world weapons and tactics.
The unease isn’t really about Top Gun’s fit. Both properties lean into grounded, military flavored action, and even skeptics admit the crossover makes sense on paper. What unsettles part of the fanbase is that Battlefield had positioned itself as the one shooter that doesn’t do this at all, and now it does.
Call of Duty Already Ran This Experiment
Call of Duty tested this exact scenario first. In 2023, Activision added Nicki Minaj as a playable Warzone operator for hip hop’s 50th anniversary, complete with two bubblegum pink weapons that shoot paint. Reaction was loud and split: some players called it the best thing to ever happen to the franchise, while others said it was the stupidest skin they’d seen in the game’s history.
Six months before Battlefield’s own reveal, a different studio used the identical joke as a selling point. Bulkhead, developer of the upcoming tactical shooter WARDOGS, posted a rival shooter’s own no Nicki Minaj pledge in February 2026: “No Battlepass. No Pay to Win. No Nikki Minaj Skins.”
The phrase has become shorthand across the genre for one thing: a promise not to become Call of Duty. Battlefield’s designers used it first. Now they are the ones breaking it.
Wake Island Returns With New Company
Wake Island is one of Battlefield’s most reused classic maps, and on August 18 it returns rebuilt for Carrier Strike, with an F-14 available to fly and Bradshaw’s voice on the radio. By September 15, when Phase 3 closes the season, Rooster’s voice will have spent a month coming out of a jet flying over a beach Battlefield players have stormed for years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Maverick himself playable in Battlefield 6?
No. The confirmed voice acted characters are Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd (Lewis Pullman) and Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates (Charles Parnell). Tom Cruise has long declined to license his Maverick likeness to video games, and EA’s announcement doesn’t include him.
Does Battlefield REDSEC get the Top Gun crossover too?
Yes, though not identically. REDSEC gains a new aircraft carrier point of interest and a jets only Gauntlet mission, while the reimagined Wake Island map and the Carrier Strike mode are tied to owning the full Battlefield 6 game.
What time does the Top Gun update go live on August 18?
EA has not published an exact rollout time or time zone for Phase 2. Only the calendar date is confirmed so far, the same pattern Phase 1 followed on July 21.
