WCE App Update Adds Route Assistant to Force Google and Apple Maps onto the Highway
Most Malaysian drivers who have tried to plot a Klang-to-Taiping run already know the problem. Type the destination into Google Maps or Waze, and the app pushes you onto the North-South Expressway (PLUS) by default, even when the parallel West Coast Expressway (WCE) would be faster, quieter, or simply preferred. The 233 km tolled corridor has been bleeding share to that routing habit for years, and on Monday WCE shipped its answer: a refreshed mobile app with a built-in Route Assistant that bounces drivers into Google Maps or Apple Maps with a WCE-routed itinerary already loaded.
The feature itself takes a single tap. The context around it is the bigger story. The Route Assistant arrives in the same four-week window as the May 1 launch of Touch ‘n Go (TNG) eWallet PayDirect at every WCE toll plaza, the March 18 opening of Section 4 between Klang and the Federal Highway, and a separate expansion of the WCE rest-area network. Read together, the three moves describe a concession finally putting the digital, payment, and physical pieces in place to make the highway a genuine PLUS alternative rather than a quieter cousin.
Route Assistant: A One-Tap Override for Google and Apple Maps
The Route Assistant sits inside the updated WCE mobile app and does one specific job. A user picks a destination from the in-app list, taps the button, and the app hands the routing request to either Google Maps or Apple Maps with WCE waypoints pre-loaded. The downstream navigation app then turns those waypoints into turn-by-turn directions, which means drivers keep the navigation interface they already trust while the route itself has been forced through WCE.
Waze, owned by Google but operated as a separate routing product, is not supported at launch. That is a real limitation for the segment of Malaysian drivers who use Waze almost exclusively for highway routing because of its crowdsourced hazard alerts. WCE has not committed to a Waze integration timeline, and the technical fix is non-trivial: Waze’s deep-link URL scheme handles destinations cleanly but does not accept multi-waypoint routing the way Google’s intent system does.
The Route Assistant is paired with two complementary tools. Live CCTV viewing lets a driver pull current camera feeds from points along the WCE alignment before leaving home or a rest stop. The Traffic Update module pushes notifications for major accidents, temporary closures, and disruptions in real time, sourced from WCE’s traffic management centre rather than crowdsourced reports.
Why a Toll Highway Needs Its Own App in 2026
A driver in 2026 should not, in theory, need to install a separate app to be told which highway to use. The fact that WCE has built one is a tell about how routing software shapes physical infrastructure outcomes.
The Routing-App Default Problem
Google Maps and Waze pick routes using a blended objective function that weights travel time, historical congestion, road class, and toll cost. For most Klang Valley-to-northern Perak trips, the longer-established PLUS corridor wins that calculation by default because it has more data history, denser CCTV-fed traffic signals, and a route geometry the algorithms have been tuning against for a decade longer. WCE, which only opened its first section in 2019 and added Sections 1 and 2 in late 2024 and early 2025, is comparatively under-indexed.
The Competitive Math for WCE
PLUS carries roughly 1.8 million vehicles a day on average across its network, with peak-day volumes climbing past 2 million during festive periods. WCE has not published comparable daily traffic figures, but the gap is wide enough that even single-digit-percent share migration from PLUS would meaningfully shift WCE’s toll revenue. A Class 1 vehicle pays about RM0.16 per kilometre on WCE, which makes a Banting-to-Taiping trip price-competitive with the equivalent PLUS routing while bypassing the Klang Valley bottlenecks between Nilai and Sungai Besi.
The Full Feature Set Inside the Updated WCE App
Beyond the Route Assistant, the refresh adds five tools aimed at trip planning, payment clarity, and on-route services. Each one targets a friction point that the routing apps either skip entirely or surface poorly.
- WCE Assistant, an artificial-intelligence-powered (AI) chatbot for travel and highway questions answered without leaving the app
- Toll Rate Calculator, which takes an entry plaza, an exit plaza, and a vehicle class and returns the exact fare
- EV charging navigation for the four operational charging locations along the alignment
- Service-point directory covering rest and service areas, toll plazas, and emergency phone numbers
- Tourism layer for attractions, historical landmarks, hotels, and restaurants near WCE exits, each tappable into a navigation handoff
The tourism layer is the surprise inclusion. It is also the one most likely to bring non-commuter drivers onto the route. WCE passes within easy detour distance of Kuala Selangor’s fireflies, Sekinchan’s paddy fields, Lumut’s ferry terminal to Pangkor, and Taiping’s heritage quarter, all of which the in-app guide can route to.
Three May Launches That Change the WCE Equation
The app update did not arrive in isolation. It is the third of three operational changes that landed within ten weeks of each other, each one removing a specific objection drivers have used to skip WCE.
PayDirect at Every Toll Plaza
On May 1, WCE became the first end-to-end interstate highway in Malaysia to support TNG eWallet PayDirect at every toll plaza along the alignment. PayDirect deducts toll charges directly from a linked TNG eWallet balance, which removes the top-up friction that has irritated SmartTAG users for years. Eligible PayDirect users also get an SOS Balance credit line of up to 24 hours when the eWallet balance is short at the gantry, which neutralises the most common cash-flow failure mode at a toll lane.
Section 4 Opening Plugs the Klang Gap
Section 4, a 4.5 km stretch connecting the WCE alignment to the Federal Highway and bypassing the Grand Sepadu interchange on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), was launched on March 18. The opening matters because it shortens the WCE on-ramp for drivers leaving Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and central Klang. Before March 18, those drivers had to detour through congested interchanges that often erased WCE’s time advantage before the meter even started.
The App as the Glue Layer
The app is the connective tissue that makes the other two changes visible to drivers. PayDirect is invisible if a driver never gets to a WCE plaza. Section 4 is invisible if Google Maps does not surface it. The Route Assistant solves the discovery problem; PayDirect solves the payment friction; Section 4 solves the access geometry. Each move on its own would have been incremental; together, they read as a coordinated digital-and-physical campaign.
Where the 11 Sections Stand Today
The WCE alignment runs 233 km from Banting in Selangor to Changkat Jering near Taiping Selatan in Perak, split into 11 numbered sections. Eight are open to the public; the remaining gaps fall on either side of the Klang Valley and around Tanjong Karang, and they are what stand between WCE and a fully through-routed alternative to PLUS.
| Section | State | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Section 1 (Banting to SKVE) | Selangor | Open (Aug 2024) |
| Section 2 (SKVE to SAE) | Selangor | Open (Jan 2025) |
| Section 3 (SKVE to NKVE/FHR2) | Selangor | Construction, near-Klang opening targeted early 2027 |
| Section 4 (NKVE link to Federal Highway) | Selangor | Completed |
| Section 5 (Bukit Raja Selatan to Utara) | Selangor | Open (Dec 2019) |
| Section 6 (Bukit Raja Utara to Assam Jawa) | Selangor | Open (Nov 2023) |
| Section 7 (Assam Jawa to Tanjong Karang) | Selangor | Construction, end-2026 target |
| Sections 8 to 11 (Hutan Melintang to Taiping) | Perak | All four open |
Six rest and service areas are operational, with four more targeted to come online by the end of this year. EV charging is live at four toll plazas: Taiping Selatan southbound, Trong, Assam Jawa, and SAE. Two additional petrol stations are working through the approval pipeline.
We want to ensure that WCE users not only enjoy a smoother and safer journey, but also have convenient access to accurate information at all times.
That was Lyndon Alfred Felix, managing director of WCE Holdings, framing the app refresh as part of an ongoing digital push. The app has logged close to 20,000 downloads to date, a small number against PLUS’s daily traffic but a usable beachhead for a concession that is still building route familiarity.
What Drivers Should Check Before the Switch
The updated WCE app is live on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. A few practical points to weigh before relying on it for a real trip.
- Waze users will still need to fall back to Google Maps or Apple Maps for the Route Assistant handoff, at least until Waze support ships
- PayDirect requires linking a physical TNG card to the eWallet before it works at WCE gantries; the link-up happens inside the TNG eWallet app, not the WCE app
- Cash is not accepted at any WCE plaza; the corridor is fully electronic across Touch ‘n Go, SmartTAG, RFID, and PayDirect
- Section 3 is still closed, so drivers planning a through-route from southern Selangor to the Federal Highway area should verify the latest section status inside the app before departing
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the WCE Route Assistant and how does it work?
The Route Assistant is a feature inside the updated West Coast Expressway mobile app that lets drivers route to a destination through WCE with a single tap. It opens either Google Maps or Apple Maps with WCE waypoints already loaded, so the navigation interface stays familiar while the route itself is forced through WCE rather than the default PLUS Highway.
Does the WCE app support Waze?
No. At launch the Route Assistant supports only Google Maps and Apple Maps. WCE has not confirmed a timeline for Waze integration, though Waze is the dominant routing app for many Malaysian drivers, which makes its absence a meaningful gap.
Can I pay tolls on WCE using TNG eWallet PayDirect?
Yes. WCE became the first end-to-end interstate highway in Malaysia to support TNG eWallet PayDirect at every toll plaza, effective May 1, 2026. PayDirect deducts toll charges directly from the eWallet balance and includes a 24-hour SOS Balance credit line for eligible users if the balance runs short at the gantry.
How many WCE sections are open to drivers?
Eight of 11 sections are currently open. Sections 1, 2, 5, and 6 are open in Selangor, and Sections 8 through 11 are open in Perak. Sections 3 and 7 remain under construction, with a stretch near Klang targeted to open in early 2027.
Where can I charge an EV along the WCE?
Four operational EV charging locations sit along the alignment: Taiping Selatan southbound, Trong, Assam Jawa, and SAE toll plazas. The WCE app’s service-point directory routes drivers to each location and lists rest and service areas alongside them.
Where can I download the updated WCE app?
The updated WCE app is available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The refresh adds the Route Assistant, live CCTV viewing, the Traffic Update push system, an AI-powered WCE Assistant chatbot, a toll rate calculator, EV charging navigation, and a tourism layer covering attractions near WCE exits.
If Sections 3 and 7 open on the current end-2026 and early-2027 schedule, the next version of this article will be about whether the Route Assistant is even necessary anymore, because by then the routing apps may have enough WCE history to surface the corridor on their own.
