That single-SKU choice is not an accident of inventory. It is what a budget phone looks like when the memory inside it has gotten dramatically more expensive to buy.

The pitch is a 5,500mAh battery, an IP64 rating, and military-grade drop certification, aimed at first-time buyers and budget upgraders who do not want to think about a charger every night. But the same week research firms tallied a memory chip shortage that has pushed mobile DRAM (dynamic random access memory) prices up by double-digit percentages and thinned India’s entry-level phone segment to a fraction of its former size. The T5e’s stripped-down spec sheet reads differently once you know that.

Vivo Undercuts India’s Cheapest Phone Tier

The T5e is the fourth phone in Vivo’s T5 series, joining the T5 Lite 5G, T5 Pro 5G, and T5x 5G. Unlike those three, it skips 5G entirely and runs as a dual-SIM 4G handset, a deliberate downgrade that keeps the bill of materials low.

Why Is Every Phone’s Memory Getting More Expensive?

Mobile memory prices have been climbing for more than a year, and the reason has almost nothing to do with phones. Average selling prices rose 10.4% to a record $302 over the same period, driven by what IDC called persistent memory cost inflation.

One SKU Is Cost Engineering, Not Philosophy

Vivo frames the T5e as a phone built for durability and battery over flashy specs. Read against the memory data, it looks more like the only viable way to hit Rs 13,999 at all.

A single 4GB and 64GB configuration means Vivo negotiates one memory order, not three or four. Choosing LPDDR4X over LPDDR5X, even as that older chip itself gets pricier, still buys a real discount against the newer standard. Xiaomi felt it too. Higher prices across the Redmi A7 and the POCO C71 and C75 made the sub-Rs 20,000 band the weakest-performing price tier for both Realme and Xiaomi during the second quarter, according to Counterpoint’s tracker. It fits a wider pattern already visible in the numbers: a separate tally found India’s smartphone shipments sinking 13% as chipmakers post record profits.

Vivo itself is not immune to the squeeze. Its own Y and T series saw multiple price hikes in the second quarter that weighed on demand and produced a double-digit sales decline year over year, even as the brand held the top overall spot in India with roughly 18% market share, down from 19.2% a year earlier. Premium momentum around the V70 masked weakness underneath. MediaTek, not Unisoc, still supplies the chipsets in about half of India’s phones, a reminder of how small a player Unisoc remains in this fight.

Whether Rs 13,999 Survives the Rest of 2026

Nothing about the memory market suggests this pressure eases soon. Counterpoint expects the shortage to persist into 2027, and Gartner has separately warned that rising memory costs will keep pushing shipments down while shifting buyer demand toward pricier, premium phones.

Global smartphone shipments are projected to fall 12.9% in 2026 to about 1.12 billion units, per IDC, the sharpest contraction the industry has logged in years. Prachir Singh, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, described the underlying condition bluntly: an affordability squeeze driven by sharp memory-led cost inflation and currency pressure that has forced phone makers to raise prices across their key models.
