How Snoop Dogg Brokered Tupac’s Role in Stranger Than Heaven
RGG Studio confirmed a January 15, 2027 launch and Tupac Shakur as character Amaru, with Snoop Dogg revealing he brokered the Amaru Entertainment estate deal.
Publisher Sega and developer RGG Studio confirmed January 15, 2027 as the Stranger Than Heaven release date at Summer Game Fest 2026 on Friday, alongside a cast reveal that included Tupac Shakur as a named character called Amaru. His estate, Amaru Entertainment, approved the portrayal, confirmed no AI was used in the character design, and retains ongoing supervision over every aspect of his depiction. Pre-orders opened the same day.
Snoop Dogg’s attachment to the project, confirmed in May as the voice of a smuggler named Orpheus, runs considerably deeper than a voice acting credit. Standing onstage at the Los Angeles event with RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama, who flew from Japan for his first visit to America in 20 years, Snoop addressed the Tupac deal, plugged his gaming label Death Row Games, and introduced his son Cordell Broadus as a fellow cast member.
The Character Named Amaru
Tupac plays a narrative character in the game, not a cosmetic skin or an Easter egg. The character is named Amaru, a word drawn directly from Tupac Amaru Shakur’s own middle name, which his mother Afeni Shakur chose to honor the eighteenth-century Peruvian revolutionary Tupac Amaru II. The estate she founded in 1997 after his death carries the same name. In Sega’s official press release distributed through Games Press, the studio committed to building the character “without the use of AI, including his character design based on archival footage and photographs,” with Amaru Entertainment maintaining “ongoing supervision.”
In the trailer, Tupac’s character steps out of shadow in an open-chest kimono and a distinctive paisley bandana. Sega says more details on the character’s narrative role in the story will come at a later date.
The game also features the likeness of Bunta Sugawara, the Japanese actor who died in 2014, with his estate’s permission. Takashi Ukaji voices the character while Sugawara’s likeness appears on screen. Two posthumous castings in one game, both estate-approved and both built without generative AI, represent something new for the studio, and in that respect point to a deliberate production choice.
Snoop’s Architecture
The Broker
Snoop Dogg joined the project publicly in May 2026, announced during an Xbox Partner showcase as Orpheus, a character the official cast description calls “a cutthroat and charismatic smuggler.” His character intercepts the two protagonists at sea in the game’s opening and becomes the figure who moves them into Japan’s criminal underworld. The announcement at the time treated his involvement as a celebrity cast addition. Friday’s event told a different story.
Speaking from the SGF stage alongside Yokoyama, he addressed how the Tupac deal came together:
The Tupac estate and my son and myself, we work very closely together.
The commercial context behind that statement is specific. Snoop acquired Death Row Records in 2022, and with it the masters of Tupac’s two 1996 albums, All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati. Death Row Records pays artist royalties to Amaru Entertainment under that arrangement. By the time the game’s licensing deal was being structured, the two parties already had an active financial relationship through those music rights. The Amaru Entertainment name gives complete control over Tupac’s name, image, and likeness for licensing purposes, and RGG Studio’s approach to that estate went through someone who already had the working relationship.
The Builder
Cordell Broadus also has a character in the game: “The Veiled Stranger,” whose significance in the fifty-year story hasn’t been detailed publicly. Both father and son appeared onstage with Yokoyama in Los Angeles, presenting the project as a multi-member family collaboration rather than a single contracted performance.
He also used the stage to flag Death Row Games, the gaming label Snoop and Cordell launched in 2023 to support minority creators within Fortnite’s UEFN ecosystem. An update would be coming “in the next few months,” he told the crowd. The brokering of the Tupac estate deal happened through a commercial relationship Snoop maintained with Amaru; the SGF stage then served as a platform for the gaming business he and Cordell have been building separately. Both outcomes came from the same moment.
A Fifty-Year Road Through Japan
The story follows Makoto Daito, voiced by Yu Shirota, a Japanese-American orphan who stows away from San Francisco to Japan in 1915 after losing both parents, persecuted for his mixed heritage on both sides of the Pacific. On the ship, he meets Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka), another mixed-heritage stowaway. The two are caught by Orpheus and pressed into service on arrival in Japan. Over the next five decades, through five cities and five distinct eras of a rapidly changing country, Makoto builds something that outlasts him.
| Year | City | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| 1915 | Kokura, Fukuoka | One of the world’s largest foundries, a smoke-scorched industrial town built on forge work |
| 1929 | Kure, Hiroshima | Japan’s largest naval arsenal, a port town shaped heavily by yakuza presence from its earliest years |
| 1943 | Minami, Osaka | Western Japan’s biggest entertainment district, running against the backdrop of wartime mobilization |
| 1951 | Atami, Shizuoka | A seaside resort town at the center of Japan’s postwar tourism boom |
| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo | Kamurocho, the fictional neighborhood central to every Like a Dragon game that follows |
By 1965, Makoto founds the Tojo Clan, the yakuza organization at the core of every Like a Dragon title. The studio’s head said in May 2026 the game works without any prior knowledge of that franchise; the origin story is background for returning fans rather than a requirement for new players.
The Stage and the Street
New Combat
RGG Studio’s two previous combat approaches, the arcade brawling of the Yakuza series and the turn-based system from the Like a Dragon games, are both replaced. Players control Makoto’s left and right sides independently, assigning strikes to the corresponding buttons. Both triggers held together execute a grab; alternating them runs the combination. Footage from the May Xbox Presents deep-dive shows a physically grounded system, without the heat actions and flash finishers from the studio’s earlier work.
Moral choices appear in combat for the first time in the studio’s output. One visible sequence shows Makoto standing over a downed opponent with two prompts on screen: “Show him mercy” or “Show him no mercy.” How many choices appear across the full story, and what they affect in Makoto’s arc across five decades, has not been disclosed.
The Showbiz System
Music is a core mechanic, fitting for a game built around a smuggler played by a rap producer and a cast that performs the title track. As Makoto moves through each era’s city, he records environmental sounds and stores them as material for composition. The raw inputs include:
- The rumble of passing trains
- A neighbor snoring through a wall
- The clatter of weapons during a street fight
- The sweep of a broom across pavement
Those recordings feed a full management layer: Makoto scouts singers by listening in on street conversations, recruits performers, composes original music from his field recordings, and runs live shows, setting setlists, band arrangements, and production design including lighting. Game director Mikonobu Abe described Makoto as having “a keen ability to find the music in everyday life.” The theme song, also titled “Stranger Than Heaven,” is performed by Snoop Dogg, Ado, Tori Kelly, and Satoshi Fujihara of the band Official HIGE DANdism, all four of whom portray characters in the story.
Editions and Platforms
The game ships on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and PC via Steam. It’s a Day One Xbox Game Pass title and an Xbox Play Anywhere release. A Collector’s Edition announced Friday includes the base game for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, a Deluxe Upgrade DLC code, an exclusive 12-inch vinyl record featuring the main theme and other standout tracks, a SteelBook case, and a collector’s box. Digital standard and deluxe editions are also available to pre-order now across all platforms.
The project first appeared publicly at The Game Awards in December 2024 under the working title Project Century. Yokoyama approved that announcement after seeing the Kokura chapter, which the team completed in roughly two to three months of development. The official game name was announced in June 2025. A dedicated Xbox Partner showcase in May 2026 brought the first detailed look at gameplay and cast, and the Summer Game Fest reveal trailer on June 5 delivered the full cast and the release date. The game lands January 15, 2027.
