Amazon Prime South Africa is now a R59-a-month membership that combines Prime Video with free delivery benefits. Amazon says subscribers can start with a 30-day trial, then pay R59 a month or R399 a year, with Prime Day access scheduled for June 23 through June 29, 2026 in its South Africa Prime launch details.

It arrived after Showmax shut down on 30 April 2026, MyBroadband reported. EWN quoted technology commentator Arthur Goldstuck saying Prime Video had previously cost R79 a month on its own, and EWN wrote that subscribers would pay less than that previous standalone streaming price while also receiving delivery benefits.

What the R59 Membership Includes

Amazon’s launch page lists Prime benefits across shopping, video, deals and gaming. The South African plan includes unlimited fast free delivery on eligible items, Prime Video, Prime Day access, early deal access and Amazon Luna.

For Prime Video, Amazon says members get unlimited streaming of Amazon Originals and international licensed movies and series. Its launch page names Reacher, Duplicity and The Summer I Turned Pretty as examples.

  • 30-day free trial: Amazon says customers can sign up for a local Prime trial before the paid membership starts.
  • R399 a year: the annual membership option Amazon lists alongside the monthly price.
  • Prime Day access: South African Prime members get exclusive access during June 23 through June 29, 2026.
  • Amazon Luna: members can get free downloadable PC games each month and one free monthly Twitch channel subscription.

The Delivery Promise Has City Limits

The delivery rules are attached to Prime eligible items. Amazon says those items span categories including everyday essentials, groceries, electronics, home, sporting gear and kitchen.

Same-Day Delivery has a specific local condition. Amazon says it is unlimited and free for all orders placed before midday in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, with no minimum spend.

Amazon also lists unlimited free Next-Day Delivery with no minimum spend. The launch text puts both delivery speed and streaming inside the same membership.

How the Bundle Compares

EWN and TechCentral both placed the Prime bundle against the old standalone Prime Video price. TechCentral wrote that the full Prime bundle costs R59/month or R399/year, while standalone Prime Video had been R79/month.

Netflix’s South Africa page lists a streaming plan range for South Africa that starts at US$8.99 and runs to US$26.99/month. For related product coverage, see generative AI content personalization.

Showmax Closed Before Prime Day Arrives

Canal+ posted a Showmax discontinuation press release on March 5, 2026. It said MultiChoice, part of Canal+, was announcing the forthcoming discontinuation of Showmax after a comprehensive review of streaming activities.

The release said Showmax’s substantial annual losses had proved unsustainable and that the decision would not involve retrenchments. On 30 April 2026, MyBroadband reported that Showmax had stopped accepting new subscribers from 31 March 2026 and that MultiChoice set 30 April 2026 as the shutdown date.

EWN connected that closure to Amazon’s launch through Goldstuck’s comment on timing. Goldstuck told EWN the timing could not have been better in terms of Showmax closing at the end of April.

Goldstuck Names Netflix

Goldstuck’s Netflix line was direct. EWN quoted him on the price pressure this way:

At that price, I think Netflix is in trouble.

Goldstuck, identified by EWN as a technology commentator, said viewers who explore Prime Video will find a wide choice of viewing. EWN put that comment after he described Prime Video as part of the monthly Prime subscription.

His examples included Last One Laughing South Africa, the comedy series hosted by Trevor Noah, and Last One Laughing Naija, hosted by Nigerian comedian Basketmouth. EWN also reported that he signed up to watch Spider-Noir and called the series one of Prime Video’s standout offerings.

Online Retail Was Already Scaling

World Wide Worx’s 11 Sep 2025 report gives the retail backdrop for Prime’s delivery side. The online retail growth forecast for South Africa was produced with Mastercard, Peach Payments and Ask Afrika.

The report stated the market figures this way:

  • R130-billion: expected online retail turnover by the end of 2025, according to World Wide Worx.
  • R96-billion: online retail turnover reached in 2024, the study said.
  • 150,000 products: the catalogue World Wide Worx described at Amazon South Africa’s May 2024 site launch.
  • R150-billion: World Wide Worx’s projection for online retail by 2027.

The same report said Amazon launched its South African site in May 2024 with a catalogue of 150,000 products. It also said Amazon had expanded into groceries, pet food and health supplements and opened a walk-in seller centre in Cape Town in January 2025.

Rahul Jain, CEO of Peach Payments, said the focus for the next few years would be deepening consumer relationships. He said convenience and speed brought consumers online during the pandemic, and that loyalty would be built on experience.

Prime Day Brings the First Sales Event

Amazon’s launch page gives Prime Day a date for South Africa. It says Prime Day is coming to South Africa from June 23 through June 29, 2026, and that local Prime members will have exclusive access.

The same launch page says Prime members get exclusive deals and discounts on thousands of items. It also says members get early access to special deals during deal events like Black Friday.

Amazon’s launch page puts shopping, entertainment and gaming benefits inside one membership.
