Apple App Store Korea Hit 38 Trillion Won Mostly Fee Free
Apple’s App Store facilitated 38.1 trillion won in South Korea last year, 85 percent from real-world goods where developers pay no commission.
Apple’s App Store facilitated 38.1 trillion won ($26.8 billion) in billings and sales across South Korea in 2025, more than double the level five years earlier, according to a joint study by Analysis Group and Seoul National University professor Michael Lim (Lim Jae-hyeon). Real-world goods and services made up 85 percent of that total, and Apple collected fees on fewer than 10 percent of the transactions.
The figure, released Thursday via Apple, is not Apple’s own take. It measures economic activity flowing through apps on the platform. Most of the money never generates a commission.
The 38.1 Trillion Won Breakdown
Researchers estimated three main buckets for the Korean App Store ecosystem last year. Physical goods and services led by a wide margin. Digital goods and services and in-app advertising trailed far behind.
| Category | Amount (trillion won) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Real-world goods and services | 32.3 | 85% |
| Digital goods and services | 3.7 | 10% |
| In-app advertising | 2.1 | 5% |
| Total | 38.1 | 100% |
Apple only charges commission on digital goods and services sold through its own in-app purchase system. Physical commerce, external digital purchases, and ads sit outside that cut. The result is that developers and merchants kept the proceeds on more than 90 percent of the activity measured in the new Korean App Store ecosystem study.
Nearly 12 million people visited the Korean App Store in an average week. Domestic iOS users downloaded apps more than 670 million times across the year.
Physical Commerce Runs the Numbers
Inside the 32.3 trillion won real-world total, general retail dominated. Food delivery and pickup ranked second, a pattern the global Analysis Group work also flagged for Korea. Travel grew fastest among the physical categories, followed by grocery and general retail.
- General retail: 17.8 trillion won, roughly 47 percent of physical activity
- Food delivery and pickup: 6.1 trillion won, 16 percent
- Travel: 4.3 trillion won, 11 percent
- Grocery: 3.5 trillion won, 9 percent
- Ride hailing: 0.6 trillion won, about 1 percent
These flows show apps functioning as everyday storefronts for Korean consumers who already live on mobile commerce. Grocery runs, meal orders, and trip bookings move through the same interface as games and streaming. The App Store becomes infrastructure for physical spending rather than a pure content marketplace.
Digital categories still grew. Mobile games, streaming services, and enterprise apps drove the 3.7 trillion won digital bucket. Photo and video editing plus education apps also posted strong gains as users turned to tools for creation and learning.
Korean Developers Hold the Home Market
Local studios and individuals punch above their weight inside South Korea. Apps from Korean developers accounted for about 60 percent of downloads by domestic users and nearly 50 percent of the sales those users generated.
Domestic developer revenue from Korean users rose 56 percent between 2020 and 2025. That local stickiness matters in a market where foreign apps compete hard for attention and wallet share.
Seventy-six percent of Korean developers recorded downloads outside the country. Those earning international revenue averaged sales in more than 30 foreign App Store storefronts. The platform turns a strong home base into a ready export channel.
Games and Small Teams Stretch Worldwide
Game developers saw the clearest global tilt. Roughly 85 percent of their App Store downloads came from users outside South Korea. Worldwide users downloaded Korean-developed apps 1.17 billion times in 2025.
HAEGIN’s social game Play Together crossed 230 million cumulative downloads within five years. More than 90 percent of players found it organically through the App Store. The studio uses Game Center leaderboards and achievements to keep engagement high.
From the early days of Play Together’s launch, we were able to confirm almost immediately that the App Store increases the game’s visibility and provides opportunities to reach players outside of Korea.
Lee Chang-yoon, head of business development at HAEGIN, said the worldwide features and recommendations helped build the community and drive five-year growth.
Small developers as a group saw App Store revenue climb 85 percent over the same five years. Sketchsoft’s Feather, a 3D drawing and modeling app built for iPad and Apple Pencil, won a 2025 Apple Design Award. It has reached more than 100,000 paid users across 156 countries since its 2024 launch.
CEO Kim Yong-gwan credited the broader developer tools and the reduced commission track for letting a small team reinvest savings into new features spanning 3D printing, spatial computing, and AI.
Apple’s Developer Academy at POSTECH has graduated more than 1,000 learners who have released over 400 apps. Those programs sit alongside ongoing Meet with Apple sessions and access to more than 250,000 APIs.
Where the Commission Lands
Apple’s standard rate on digital goods and services remains 30 percent. Most developers selling digital items qualify for the 15 percent Small Business Program rate if prior-year proceeds stay under $1 million. The program covers the large majority of digital sellers.
South Korea was the first country to force alternative payment options. Developers can use the South Korea external purchase entitlement for a separate binary sold only on the Korean storefront. Apple still takes a 26 percent commission on those external flows. The entitlement cannot mix with standard in-app purchase inside the same app binary.
Because physical goods, ads, and many external digital purchases sit outside commission entirely, the 90-percent-plus fee-free share holds even after the regulatory changes. The structure keeps Apple’s cut concentrated on a minority slice while the platform carries far larger commerce volumes.
Hardware costs continue to shift elsewhere in Apple’s business, from memory-driven MacBook pricing to upcoming iPhone launch pricing splits. The services and platform side, by contrast, keeps emphasizing the fee-light bulk of activity.
The Platform Story Apple Wants Told
Tim Cook framed the Korean results as proof of the original App Store idea. “Korean developers are the best example of the values the App Store has aimed for from the beginning. They take great ideas, build something wonderful, and grow them into successful businesses,” he said. “The Korean developer community is made of dynamic entrepreneurs, creators, and companies, and Apple is proud to keep supporting them as they create their best work through the App Store and our powerful software and hardware ecosystem.”
The same Analysis Group team produced the broader 2025 global estimate of a global App Store $1.4 trillion total. Physical goods made up $1.1 trillion of that worldwide figure. Digital goods hit $149 billion and in-app ads $151 billion. Korea’s heavy physical weighting and food-delivery emphasis fit the regional pattern the global report already noted.
Consumer-facing AI apps grew billings four times faster than the rest of the top 100 globally. Korean developers already lean into creation tools and games that can absorb those features. The local report does not break out AI specifically, yet the academy curriculum and small-team examples already point that direction.
Apple hardware faces its own cost cycles, including the Apple hardware cost pressures elsewhere tied to memory. The App Store numbers give the company a cleaner narrative of partnership and developer success in one of its most advanced mobile markets.
The 38.1 trillion won total will be cited as Apple strength. The finer print shows Korean merchants, game studios, and small teams capturing most of the value while using the store as distribution and discovery rails. That split is the lasting feature of the 2025 snapshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much of the 38.1 trillion won did Apple keep as commission?
Apple collected fees on less than 10 percent of the measured activity because it only charges on digital goods and services sold through its own system; physical sales, many external digital purchases, and in-app ads generate no commission for the company.
Who produced the South Korea App Store ecosystem report?
The study was conducted jointly by economists at Analysis Group, led by Dr. Juliette Caminade, and Professor Michael Lim (Lim Jae-hyeon) of Seoul National University’s business school, with Apple providing support but the authors retaining the conclusions.
What share of Korean App Store downloads come from local developers?
Apps developed in South Korea accounted for roughly 60 percent of all downloads by domestic users in 2025 and nearly 50 percent of the sales those users generated on the platform.
How successful are Korean game developers outside the country?
About 85 percent of downloads for Korean game developers came from users outside South Korea, and Korean apps overall were downloaded 1.17 billion times worldwide last year.
What is the reduced commission for small App Store businesses?
Developers with under $1 million in prior-year proceeds across all apps qualify for a 15 percent commission on paid apps and in-app purchases instead of the standard 30 percent rate under the Small Business Program.
