Big Walk Bets You Will Find a Crew Without Matchmaking
House House’s Big Walk blocks solo and random queues on purpose. Join codes, crossplay and Reddit LFG groups are already filling the gap at launch.
Big Walk will not let you get far alone and it will never drop you into a lobby of strangers. The co-op adventure from House House, the studio behind Untitled Goose Game, and publisher Panic launched August 4, 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 as a friends-only experience built around proximity chat and shared puzzles.
That restriction is the whole point. The developers bet players would organize lasting groups instead of relying on random matchmaking, and the first days of codes flying across Reddit plus strong review scores suggest the wager is landing.
You Start a Session or Join With a Code
You can load into the open world by yourself. Progress stops almost immediately because every meaningful puzzle needs collaboration. PC Gamer’s Shaun Prescott put it plainly after hands-on time: it is pointless to go far alone unless you only want the scenery.
There is no public matchmaking and no server browser. To play you either host or join.
- Host starts the session and becomes the keeper of the save; progress lives with that host.
- Friends on the same platform friends list (Steam, PlayStation Network, Nintendo) can see the active game and join directly if space remains.
- Anyone else uses a short Join Code the host generates. On PS5 and Switch 2 the code is often the only practical route. The code appears in the corner of the host menu before launch and later under Session Details.
- Mac App Store players lack Game Center friend lists, so they rely on codes.
The official FAQ on matchmaking and join codes walks through every step and notes the host must already be loaded into the world before others connect. A password option exists and can be changed mid-session.
House House Designed the Barriers on Purpose
The studio is blunt. Big Walk is “entirely about teamwork and talking.” Everything is built for cooperative multiplayer. A single-player mode was never on the table.
Big Walk is a long-form cooperative game. It’s made to be played with the same group over multiple sessions, so it doesn’t make sense to throw strangers together randomly. We think it’s a much better experience to organize and play Big Walk with people you know, or people you want to know better.
That is the developers speaking in their own FAQ. Outside voice programs such as Discord are explicitly disallowed. Proximity voice and matching proximity text chat are the only supported channels. Voices and readable text fade with distance, muffle through walls, and crackle through walkie-talkies. Tools like laser pointers, megaphones, flares, binoculars and gestures fill the gaps when speech is blocked. Playing in the same physical room is discouraged because real-world audio breaks the systems.
Kotaku’s reviewer celebrated the refusal to dilute the design with a solo path or random queues, arguing the game is stronger because it demands real coordination. The bet is that the friction produces better stories than a quickmatch queue ever could.
Strangers Still Line Up on Reddit
Plenty of players opened the game only to find their regular friends uninterested. X posts and library screenshots of the lonely install are common. The internet filled the gap immediately.
The r/BigWalk daily Looking for Group thread for 5 August 2026 drew more than 500 comments in a day. Players posted fresh codes, platform, region, mic requirements, preferred group size and progress markers such as “black tower” or “new 4+ group.” Newcomers asked for patient hosts. Mid-run groups recruited replacements after disconnects. Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking lobbies formed alongside English ones. Some hosts left machines running as dedicated sessions.
Community notes make clear these groups are player-run and not endorsed by the studio. Public Discord invites are barred from the thread; details move to DMs. The result looks less like classic random matchmaking and more like the multi-session crews House House wanted. People who started as strangers are already planning return sessions on the same save.
Stats from launch window
- 500+ comments on a single daily LFG thread within roughly a day of release
- 2-12 player sessions actively recruiting across platforms
- Cross-region joins common once a code is shared
The same pattern appears on Switch 2 and PlayStation forums. The absence of a matchmaking button did not stop play; it changed how groups form.
Player Count Rewrites Parts of the Island
When a host creates a session they pick a 2-player, 3-player or 4+ version of the world. Some layout and challenge details shift to match the minimum expected group size. The setting is a floor, not a hard ceiling: extra players can still drop in later.
Two players get a tighter co-op focus. Near the 12-player cap the tone becomes a chaotic mess by design. The Steam page listing 2 to 12 players describes both ends of that spectrum and notes the game has a hand-crafted beginning, middle and ending while still working as a place to hang out.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum players for real progress | 2 |
| Maximum players | 12 |
| World variants | 2-player, 3-player, 4+ |
| Platforms at launch | Steam (Windows/Mac), PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 |
| Cross-play | Yes, all platforms |
| Launch price (Steam) | $19.99, 25% off to $14.99 through mid-August |
| PS5 availability | Day-one PlayStation Plus Essential |
Host choice of variant happens at session start. If attendance will be spotty, the FAQ advises picking a lower number so the world stays fair for whoever shows up.
Crossplay Keeps Mixed Hardware Groups Alive
Friends do not need matching boxes. Full cross-play lets Steam, PS5 and Switch 2 players share the same session via friends list or Join Code. That removes one common excuse for empty lobbies.
The host still owns the save. When the host ends the session everyone else drops. Continuing later requires the same host to fire the game up again. Automatic cloud-style handoff between different hosts is not part of the design. Groups that want multi-week campaigns therefore pick a reliable host early.
Accessibility options include challenge skipping (host-enabled), full rebinding, FOV adjustment, motion-reduction overlays, hold-versus-toggle controls and the ability for characters to carry one another. Text chat fully substitutes for voice if a player has no microphone; the same distance and item rules apply.
Early Scores Back the Social Gamble
On Steam the game sits at Very Positive, with 89 percent of 2,345 English reviews positive shortly after launch. Metacritic’s PC score has hovered in the low-to-mid 90s with universal acclaim labels once a dozen-plus critic reviews landed, putting it among 2026’s strongest openers according to roundups. User scores are more mixed, which is common when a game demands coordination and working microphones.
Reviewers who finished sessions with friends repeatedly praise the proximity systems and the way tools force creative communication. The same pieces note the obvious cost: anyone without a willing group or the willingness to LFG will bounce. House House accepted that trade-off. The Big Walk official site from House House still frames the game as a place to hang out and get lost with close friends.
Six years of development produced a title that refuses the usual live-service safety nets. Launch data so far shows players meeting the studio halfway. Codes keep circulating, return sessions are forming, and the review aggregate rewards the stubbornness.
If your friends list is quiet tonight, the daily Reddit thread and platform Discords are already full of people in the same spot. Grab a code, pick a mic or lean on text chat, and treat the first session as a tryout for the multi-day crew the game actually wants.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you play Big Walk completely solo?
No. You can walk around the starting area alone, but puzzles and progression require at least one other player. The developers state the entire game is designed for cooperative multiplayer and offer no single-player campaign or AI companions.
Does Big Walk have online matchmaking or a server browser?
No. There is no random matchmaking. Sessions are private by default and joined only through platform friends lists or a host-generated Join Code. The studio says the long-form structure is meant for the same group across multiple sessions.
How do you join a friend’s Big Walk session?
If you are already friends on Steam, PlayStation or Nintendo networks, the active host game usually appears in a friends menu. Otherwise the host shares a short Join Code shown in the host menu and under Session Details. Enter the code after selecting Join Game. The host must already be loaded into the world.
How many players can join one Big Walk world?
Sessions support 2 to 12 players. The host chooses a 2-player, 3-player or 4+ world variant at creation; some challenges and layout details adapt. Extra players beyond the chosen floor can still join later.
Is Discord or other outside voice chat allowed?
No. The FAQ forbids talking outside the in-game proximity voice and text systems. Outside chat removes the intentional communication limits that drive puzzles and tools. The game will not ban you for it, but large parts of the design stop making sense.
Which platforms support Big Walk and is there crossplay?
It launched on Steam for Windows and Mac, PlayStation 5 (including day-one PlayStation Plus Essential) and Nintendo Switch 2. Full cross-play works across all three. No other platforms are planned.
