Apple’s iOS 27 Beta Gives AirPods Custom EQ and Early Firmware Bugs
Apple’s iOS 27 public beta adds AirPods custom EQ, GymKit sync and Siri AI support, but early testers report bricked cases and shaky noise cancellation.
Apple’s iOS 27 public beta arrived July 13, 2026, and AirPods got their biggest firmware update in years a day later, custom EQ included. The same beta firmware is already bricking charging cases and scrambling noise cancellation for some testers.
Custom EQ has topped AirPods wish lists for years, and it finally works, but only on earbuds built around Apple’s H2 chip. The firmware that delivers it has no progress bar or manual trigger, and it nearly bricked one reviewer’s charging case entirely.
Custom EQ Headlines A Long List Of Changes
The new equalizer lets listeners tune mids, highs and lows to their own preference, replacing the flat, one size fits all tuning AirPods have shipped with since 2016. It runs on AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2.
The update also rebuilds the AirPods settings menu, folding noise control, transparency mode and accessibility tools into a single screen instead of scattering them across several. A new Adaptive mode slider lets listeners dial the mix between noise cancellation and transparency in real time, and a companion Off mode kills adaptive features entirely to stretch battery life on long flights or workdays.
AirPods now also talk to the rebuilt Siri AI running on Gemini when paired with a compatible iPhone, tying the earbuds into the feature Apple built its whole iOS 27 launch around.
A handful of smaller changes round out the update:
- Head gesture controls let testers accept or decline calls with a nod or a shake, though several beta testers say the decline gesture barely registers.
- Streamlined navigation puts AirPods settings and accessibility tools closer to the surface of the Settings app.
- Switching audio between iPhone, iPad and Mac happens faster, with fewer dropped handoffs.
- AirPods Pro 3 now support Precision Finding through the Find My app on Apple Watch.
None of these are flashy on their own. Together they read like Apple finishing homework it left undone for years.

Which AirPods Actually Get These Features?
Only AirPods built around Apple’s H2 chip get the new features, and even among those, GymKit fitness syncing and Precision Finding are reserved for AirPods Pro 3 alone. Everyone running an older model, including the original AirPods Max, is locked out of the entire update, echoing how iOS 27 gates its flashiest Siri AI features to newer iPhones.
Custom EQ settings live on the earbuds themselves rather than on the iPhone, which is why the original AirPods Max, built on the older H1 chip, cannot run it no matter which iPhone it pairs to.
GymKit used to require an Apple Watch as a middleman. iOS 27 lets AirPods Pro 3 sync heart rate data straight through the iPhone instead, closing a gap that fitness-focused users have complained about for years.
| AirPods Model | Custom EQ | GymKit Heart Rate Sync | Public Beta Firmware |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | Yes | No | Yes |
| AirPods 4 (ANC) | Yes | No | Yes |
| AirPods Pro 2 | Yes | No | Yes |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| AirPods Max 2 | Yes | No | Yes |
| Original AirPods Max | No | No | No |
AirPods Max 2 owners are testing beta firmware for the first time ever. Owners of the original AirPods Max, first sold in 2020, get nothing from this update at all.
The Update Nobody Can Rush
There is no button that says update now. Testers turn on beta firmware by opening Settings, tapping Bluetooth, selecting the info icon next to their AirPods, and switching on AirPods Beta Updates.
From there, the earbuds have to sit charging, within range of the paired iPhone, before anything downloads. Apple’s own language says firmware installs once AirPods are in their case and nearby the phone, without specifying how long that takes. Testers and outlets tracking the rollout say it can run to a few hours, since AirPods lack the straightforward update option built into other Apple devices.
That opacity has produced a smaller, running mess of its own. Several outlets have listed the third developer beta’s firmware build as 9A5314b for weeks, while testers’ own devices display 9A314b instead, a mismatch beta testers have flagged repeatedly on comment threads without a clean explanation ever surfacing. iOS 27’s parallel developer beta 3’s own build number at least carries a version string nobody disputes.
When Beta Firmware Breaks
For Mahmoud, a writer who tests Apple hardware for Macworld, the firmware nearly ruined a $249 pair of AirPods Pro 3. He installed the developer build right after WWDC in June and watched the case’s status light stop flashing and its battery reading disappear from his iPhone. The case, he wrote, was completely dead.
He got it working again only after letting both the case and the earbuds drain fully and recharge from empty, a fix that will not work for every failure and one he called a possible $249 problem, since he could not order a replacement case alone where he lives.
Other testers describe smaller but stubborn glitches. One wrote on MacRumors’ forums about flying with build 9A314b active:
I’m sorry Apple but the noise cancelling in this build 9A314b SUCKS!
The poster, mid flight at 38,000 feet, said the cancellation rolled in and out unpredictably, sometimes letting the plane’s engine noise through entirely. Others on the same threads report erratic volume, slow responses during calls, and an adaptive mode that plays a repeating volume change chime even when nothing has changed.
None of that squares with how calm the rest of iOS 27 has looked in testing. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman described the wider update’s focus on reliability as Snow Leopard-like rather than feature heavy, and he has reportedly run all three developer betas without a crash. The instability, so far, is concentrated in the earbuds, not the phone.
Apple Still Commands Almost A Quarter Of The Earbuds Market
None of the bugs appear to be slowing AirPods down commercially. Apple captured 23% of the global TWS market in the first quarter of 2026, according to research firm Smart Analytics Global, with Xiaomi second at 11% and Beats third at 8%.
Apple’s lead looks wider by revenue. The company took 44% of global true wireless stereo (TWS) wholesale revenue in the same quarter, helped by AirPods’ premium pricing, even as total shipments across the category grew just 4% year over year.
Market researcher 6Wresearch values the wider AirPods market at roughly $18.6 billion in 2024, and expects it to surpass $28.4 billion by 2031, growing at a 6.2% annual rate through the decade. That is the business iOS 27’s firmware bugs are landing on, a still growing, still dominant product line Apple can afford to test in public.
Camera AirPods Are Already In Apple’s Pipeline
Apple is already working on the next hardware jump. MacRumors reports, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that camera equipped AirPods are planned for late 2027, arriving alongside a 20th anniversary iPhone and a new foldable model. Apple has not confirmed either product.
The cameras reportedly will not take photos. Instead, they are expected to feed information about a wearer’s surroundings to Siri, which would make the earbuds Apple’s first wearable AI product.
A bricked case is a minor annoyance for earbuds that only play music. It becomes a bigger liability once AirPods are expected to watch a room and report back to an AI assistant.
For now, the more modest work continues. Apple’s general release anticipated around September 14 follows a release candidate expected near the company’s September 9 keynote, with AirPods firmware included in that rollout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which AirPods models support custom EQ, and how many profiles can I save?
Custom EQ works on AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, all of which use Apple’s H2 chip. Only one custom sound profile can be saved at a time, so switching styles means overwriting the existing profile rather than storing several side by side.
Is it safe to install the AirPods public beta firmware?
Beta trackers recommend installing it only on a spare pair set aside for testing, never on a daily driver pair, since Apple provides no manual rollback tool if something goes wrong. A Macworld reviewer’s AirPods Pro 3 case froze completely after a beta install and only recovered after a full battery drain and recharge, a fix that will not work for every failure.
How do I turn on AirPods beta firmware updates?
Testers first need a free account in Apple’s Beta Software Program before the option appears. From there, open Settings, tap Bluetooth, select the info icon beside the connected AirPods, and switch on AirPods Beta Updates, then leave the earbuds charging near the paired iPhone until the update installs on its own.
Will the beta firmware hurt my AirPods’ battery life?
Testers should expect somewhat worse battery life along with occasional connection drops while running the beta, a pattern typical of pre release AirPods firmware and one flagged by outlets tracking the rollout closely. Apple has not published formal release notes acknowledging the tradeoff.
Why doesn’t custom EQ work on the original AirPods Max?
The EQ profile is stored on the earbuds’ own chip rather than on the iPhone, and the original AirPods Max shipped with the older H1 chip, which cannot hold it. Because the limit is physical rather than a software choice, there is no indication a future update will add EQ support to that model.
