iOS 27 Public Beta Speeds Up Old iPhones but Gates Its New Siri AI

Apple pushed the iOS 27 public beta to iPhones on July 13, its widest device rollout in years. The update installs on anything already running iOS 26, back to the 2019 iPhone 11. But Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant that headlines the whole release, will not work on most of those phones.

Reaching Siri AI’s best features means owning specific recent hardware, joining a waitlist, and living outside the European Union or China, where Apple has confirmed the assistant will not launch at all. Apple’s other big pitch, a claimed list of more than 40 performance fixes reaching phones as old as the iPhone 11, only partly holds up once independent testers time it with a stopwatch.

iOS 27 Reaches Back to the 2019 iPhone 11

The first public beta became available through the free Apple Beta Software Program on July 13, days after Apple seeded the third developer beta on July 6. Anyone can enroll with an Apple ID, then switch it on from Settings, General, Software Update, Beta Updates.

Apple confirmed the update supports every iPhone that already runs iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 series and the second and third generation iPhone SE. That is one of the broadest support windows Apple has offered in years, keeping seven year old hardware in the update cycle instead of cutting it loose.

The release also loosens up Liquid Glass, the translucent interface Apple introduced last year to mixed reviews. A new system wide slider lets people dial down the transparency effect that some users found hard to read in bright light.

Beyond Siri, the beta spreads smaller changes across apps most people already open every day.

None of that needs a waitlist or a specific chip. Siri AI does.

The Hardware Wall Inside Siri AI

Apple rebuilt Siri from the ground up for iOS 27, giving it a standalone app, a conversation history, and the ability to search across Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders and Calendar instead of admitting it could not find anything. Apple built the underlying Foundation Models in collaboration with Google, drawing on technology behind Gemini, part of an AI strategy Apple undersold at its own keynote.

None of that runs everywhere. Apple Intelligence, the umbrella system Siri AI depends on, needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Anything older gets the visual polish and the speed gains, not the assistant.

Even inside that compatible group, there is a second tier. The most capable version, with a customizable voice pace and expressiveness plus the sharpest on-device dictation, needs 12GB of unified memory. Only the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max currently carry that much.

Even qualifying hardware does not switch Siri AI on by itself. Apple is rolling the feature out through a waitlist, and early testers describe a system that can already read a flyer, pull a barcode from the Camera app and turn it into a Wallet pass, and import events straight onto a calendar.

No Siri AI for the EU or China

Apple confirmed that Siri AI will ship with no timeline for European availability, citing its standoff with regulators over the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a law that forces large platforms to open core services to rival companies. Apple says regulators’ interpretation of that law would force it to give any AI system nearly unlimited access to a user’s device, along with the power to act on it without ongoing oversight.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said that in the company’s statement, adding that Apple still hopes to find a path forward with regulators.

The restriction covers all 27 European Union member states. The UK, no longer part of the bloc, keeps Siri AI on schedule. Mac and Vision Pro owners in Europe keep it too, since macOS and visionOS sit outside the DMA’s device list. Apple separately confirmed that Siri AI and its newer Apple Intelligence features will not launch in China at all.

Watch owners lose out as well. Siri AI on watchOS 27 needs a paired iPhone already running Siri AI, so the EU exclusion reaches wrists along with pockets.

Do Apple’s Speed Claims Hold Up?

Apple says iOS 27 makes apps launch up to 30% faster, gets new photos into the Photos app up to 70% quicker, and speeds AirDrop transfers by as much as 80%, part of a list of more than 40 documented performance changes. Independent testing backs some of those numbers and falls well short on others.

Apple based its headline 30% figure on internal testing on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, comparing one unit running iOS 26.4.2 against an identical unit running the iOS 27 beta. Much of the gain reportedly comes from a rebuilt CPU scheduler, the system component that decides how processing power gets divided moment to moment, tuned all the way back to that 2019 phone.

Google Maps beat Apple’s own claim by a wide margin. AirDrop, the transfer Apple said would run 80% faster, saved single digit percentages on a small file and well under a minute on a nearly seven gigabyte video. Stacey Ford, Apple’s VP of OS Program Management, made the 80% claim on stage during the keynote; real files on real Wi-Fi told a smaller story.

The real gains are still there. Marketing slides and stopwatches, though, do not always agree.

Two Years Late, and Still Wearing a Beta Badge

Apple first promised an AI powered Siri at WWDC in June 2024, aiming for iOS 18. That version slipped to spring 2025, then to spring 2026, then folded entirely into iOS 27’s September launch, roughly two years behind the original promise.

The wait already cost Apple money. The company settled a lawsuit over Siri AI features that iPhone 16 buyers said were promised and never delivered on schedule.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that internal builds were, at times, slow enough that engineers believed a delay of several months would be needed, and that Siri sometimes defaulted to ChatGPT instead of Apple’s intended Gemini partner during testing. Internal test versions of iOS 27 reportedly still label the rebuilt assistant a beta experience, complete with an option to leave the beta entirely, an echo of how Apple badged the original Siri when it debuted in 2011 before quietly dropping the label two years later.

Mike Rockwell, Apple’s Siri engineering chief, called the new engine “a completely modern architecture” with room to grow, speaking to press after the keynote. Federighi described its agentic abilities, tasks Siri completes on its own across multiple apps, as experimental for now.

What September Locks Into Place

More developer and public betas will follow roughly every two weeks, building toward a release candidate expected around Apple’s next keynote. Outlets tracking the pattern point to Wednesday, September 9 for that event, with iOS 27’s general release following on Monday, September 14.

That keynote is where Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone, with pre-orders projected to open September 11 and phones reaching stores September 18. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo projects Apple will ship 7 to 8 million foldable iPhones in the second half of 2026, but only 500,000 to 1 million ready in time for the September quarter, against 20 to 22 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units in that same window.

A customizable Camera app interface and a system letting Siri AI hand requests to outside chatbots were both tested internally but never reached the WWDC stage.
