Microsoft’s next Surface Pro and Surface Laptop began shipping on June 16, 2026, both built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 processors. The Surface Pro 12th Edition (13-inch) starts at $1,499, and the Surface Laptop 8th Edition (13.8-inch) starts at $1,599, with the 15-inch version at $1,699.

For the first time since the original Surface RT in 2012, Microsoft pushed its consumer Surface line all-in on ARM in one wave, and the entry price for the laptop is $600 higher than the 7th Edition that launched in 2024.

The New Surface Lineup at a Glance

Microsoft’s June 16 announcement introduced three new devices at once. The Surface Pro 13-inch runs on the Snapdragon X2 platform, ships in Platinum, Black, and Dune finishes, and pairs a 13-inch touchscreen with a 1440p Quad HD camera and an ultrawide field of view. The Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and Surface Laptop 15-inch each ship with a choice of Snapdragon X2 Plus (10-core) or Snapdragon X2 Elite (12-core) chips, with up to 64 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a new Jade colorway on the 13.8-inch.

The starting configuration for the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch pairs the Snapdragon X2 Plus with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. A Snapdragon X2 Elite variant costs $100 more than the X2 Plus base, and a 64 GB configuration is only available in a Black finish, per Notebookcheck. Both laptops include a removable SSD.

The Performance Story Behind Snapdragon X2

The move to Snapdragon X2 is the headline. Microsoft says the new Surface Pro 13-inch delivers up to 53% faster graphic performance than the previous generation, measured using the 3DMark Steel Nomad benchmark in April 2026 against the Surface Pro 13-inch (11th Edition) with Snapdragon X Elite. The Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and 15-inch deliver up to 58% more graphics performance than the 7th Edition, per Microsoft’s own tests on 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite.

Battery life also climbs. Microsoft rates the Surface Pro 13-inch for up to 15.5 hours of local video playback, the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch for up to 20 hours, and the Surface Laptop 15-inch for up to 19 hours. Active web browsing trims those numbers to 16 hours on the 13.8-inch and 14 hours on the 15-inch. The full spec sheet and benchmark disclosures are in Microsoft’s launch announcement for the new Surface Pro and Laptop.

  • 53% faster graphics on Surface Pro 13-inch vs the 11th Edition (3DMark Steel Nomad)
  • 58% more graphics performance on Surface Laptop 13.8 and 15-inch vs the 7th Edition (3DMark Steel Nomad Lite)
  • 20 hours of local video playback on the 13.8-inch, 19 hours on the 15-inch, 15.5 hours on the Pro

Why the New Surface Laptop Starts at $1,599

The $1,599 starting price for the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch is the largest jump in the device’s history. The 7th Edition Surface Laptop launched in 2024 at $999, and Microsoft raised that to $1,499 a few months before the 8th Edition arrived, per Wired. The new starting price is $100 more than that recent hike and $600 more than the 2024 launch. The 13.8-inch ships with 512 GB of storage in the US; the 256 GB configuration is an international SKU not available in the US, per the same report.

The Surface Pro 12th Edition has tracked a similar curve. It started at $999 in 2024, went to $1,199 in early 2026 when Microsoft cut the 256 GB model, and now starts at $1,499. The starting price does not include the detachable Surface Pro Flex Keyboard, the same arrangement Microsoft used with prior Pro generations. The bigger ARM bet behind the new lineup also has a longer history: Microsoft’s prior $900 million Arm write-down with the original Surface RT is the ghost that sits next to any new Windows-on-ARM launch.

A Sharper 15-inch Display and the No.1 Laptop Camera

The 13.8-inch Surface Laptop keeps the same 2,304 by 1,536 resolution as the 7th Edition, but now runs at a 120 Hz refresh rate with 600 nits of peak brightness. The 15-inch Surface Laptop gets a sharper screen, with pixel density jumping from 201 PPI to 262 PPI, the largest density change in the Surface Laptop line. Both panels are LCD; rumored OLED variants for the 13.8-inch did not ship.

Color options for the laptops add one new finish. The 13.8-inch now comes in Platinum, Black, Dune, and a new Jade colorway. The 15-inch ships in Platinum, Black, and Dune only.

Microsoft is also calling the Surface Laptop’s camera the No.1 ranked laptop camera by DXOMARK, based on commissioned testing in April 2026 of the 13.8-inch model with Snapdragon X2 M10, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. The claim applies only to devices with the same camera hardware, firmware, and settings as tested, and rankings can change. The current list is on the DXOMARK laptop ranking.

The Surface Pro 13-inch includes a 1440p Quad HD front-facing camera with an ultrawide field of view, paired with an optional OLED display upgrade that Microsoft says delivers deeper blacks, higher contrast, and greater color accuracy. The new haptic touchpad on the Surface Laptop, and the Slim Pen on the Surface Pro, add subtle haptic feedback across Windows 11 and select apps.

Microsoft’s Repair and Recycling Push

Microsoft built the new Surface lineup around repairability and efficiency. The new Surface Repair Tool walks users through guided repair workflows for the battery, display, touchpad, and motherboard from a single screen, with replacement parts available through Microsoft and iFixIt. The enclosure on the Pro 13-inch and both laptops is made from 100% recycled aluminum alloy, with 100% recycled rare earth metals in the magnets, validated by UL.

All three new Surfaces are ENERGY STAR certified and outperform the ENERGY STAR efficiency baseline by at least 50%. Microsoft is also pre-pinning Affinity, a professional design, photo, and publishing app, to the Start menu on consumer devices, with an opt-in install required for the Business lineup.

The Rest of Microsoft’s 2026 Surface Plan

The Snapdragon X2-based devices are the first wave. Microsoft has said the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch ARM laptop built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip and positioned as its most powerful Surface Laptop ever, will arrive later this year with no announced price. The RTX Spark Dev Box, an AI-developer machine designed for sustained local compute, is also planned for 2026.

Surface for Business versions of the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop will go on sale on July 14, 2026. For US consumers, Microsoft is running a hero offer from June 16 through June 30 that includes:

  • A free Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard with a Pro purchase
  • A free Surface Arc Mouse with a Surface Laptop 13.8-inch or 15-inch purchase
  • 50% off Microsoft Complete for added protection
  • A trade-in plus-up of up to $900 on an old device
