VCT Pacific Bans Crypto Sponsors, but Riot Keeps One Exception
Riot Games keeps crypto sponsors off VCT Pacific Stage 2 broadcasts, even as Coinbase runs a narrower deal across VALORANT’s global tournaments.
Plat Chat’s Stage 2 power rankings for VCT Pacific, published this week, graded Asia’s best Valorant rosters on recent form, ACS leaders and roster moves. Search the whole document for the words token, blockchain or exchange, and you will find nothing.
Riot Games has kept crypto sponsorship out of every Pacific broadcast in 2026, from the Kickoff bracket through this month’s qualifiers. What the rankings do not show is that Riot already has a blockchain partner elsewhere in the same game. Coinbase became VALORANT’s exclusive cryptocurrency exchange partner in 2025. Pacific just never made the guest list.
Twelve Teams Are Fighting for Four Tickets to Shanghai
VCT Pacific Stage 2 runs July 16 through September 6, with group play out of Seoul before the Playoffs move to Busan for a roadshow finale. Riot set the total prize pool at $250,000, the same purse the region played for in 2025.
The qualification math changed this season. Twelve Pacific teams split into two groups of six for a single round robin. Only the top two finishers in each group advance straight to Playoffs now, a drop from the top four that used to qualify automatically.
Everyone else falls into Play-Ins, and for the first time, four Challengers teams get a direct route in after Riot scrapped its old Ascension events. The new path runs like this:
- Group Stage, two groups of six teams, single round robin, best of three across four weeks. Top two in each group move straight to Playoffs.
- Play-Ins, the remaining eight Pacific teams plus four Challengers qualifiers in a double elimination bracket. The top four advance.
- Playoffs, eight teams in Busan, double elimination, best of three except the Lower Final and Grand Final, which step up to best of five.
- Champions 2026, the top two Stage 2 finishers qualify directly for Shanghai. Two more spots go to teams with the most Championship Points banked across the season.
Riot terminated Talon Esports’ Pacific partnership on November 18, 2025, then handed the vacant slot to Full Sense three weeks later. SLT’s roster changed ownership too, rebranding as Varrel that December. Paper Rex, last year’s Stage 2 champion, has already clinched a Champions berth through Championship Points alone, with a top two finish in Stage 2 still open as extra insurance.
Coinbase’s Deal Covers Every VALORANT Stage Except This One
Riot named Coinbase as its exclusive blockchain exchange partner for global esports in 2025, a deal that started with VCT Masters Toronto and now runs through League of Legends Worlds and VALORANT Champions. Coinbase’s own announcement promised fans custom segments and in-game cosmetic rewards, delivered through broadcasts rather than the games themselves.
Riot’s head of global esports partnerships, David Mulhall, told GAM3S.GG, a web3 gaming outlet, that the company stays selective with sponsors and will keep the Coinbase relationship going only as long as it adds value for players and viewers. He also noted Coinbase has held a steadier reputation than other firms in the sector. Neither company has plans to add crypto wallets, NFTs or token rewards to actual gameplay.
None of that has touched Pacific. VCT Pacific Stage 1 ran six weeks across Seoul and Ho Chi Minh City without a blockchain sponsor, logo or NFT drop anywhere on the broadcast, according to Crypto Briefing, a cryptocurrency news outlet that tracks esports sponsorship deals. The Last Chance Qualifier Playoffs that fed this month’s Stage 2 field opened the same way on July 8, zero crypto branding in sight.
The FTX Hangover
The caution traces back to one very public collapse. FTX built a wide sports and esports sponsorship portfolio in 2021 and 2022, including a naming deal tied to TSM’s League of Legends team, before the exchange fell into bankruptcy amid fraud charges. Teams that had leaned on exchange money spent the following year scrambling for replacements.
Crypto Briefing has described Riot’s approach since as one built around competitive integrity, keeping the league’s name away from an asset class still shadowed by volatility and regulatory uncertainty. Traditional sponsors haven’t blinked. Demand for esports sponsorship inventory hasn’t dried up, it has just shifted toward companies with steadier balance sheets.
Southeast Asia’s Crypto Habits Don’t Show Up on Screen
Pacific’s broadcast sits on top of some of the most crypto active retail markets anywhere. The Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia consistently rank among the world’s top countries for cryptocurrency adoption, per Crypto Briefing’s reporting, yet none of that appetite reaches the tournament’s sponsor board.
Fan tokens elsewhere in esports haven’t made a strong case for themselves either. Crypto Briefing found that esports fan tokens stayed flat through this year’s EMEA Last Chance Qualifier, writing that the calm “reads less like validation and more like irrelevance.” Peer reviewed research on sport fan tokens has raised a similar flag, describing the products as a hypercommodification of fandom rather than genuine fan ownership.
Paris Opens a Door That Riot Keeps Shut
The Esports World Cup took the opposite bet. The 2026 edition moved from Riyadh to Paris with a record $75 million prize pool, up 20% in two years, and organizers used the relocation to let licensed blockchain firms sponsor events for the first time. Coinbase and Bitget now run prediction markets tied to EWC matches under France’s PSAN licensing regime, though on-site activations and direct token integration are still banned.
The industry hasn’t forgotten why those guardrails exist. FTX’s $210 million naming deal with the Miami Heat became the era’s cautionary tale once the exchange collapsed. Team Heretics defended its Esports World Cup VALORANT title this month and already runs its own fan token for merchandise and engagement perks, an odd fit given the tournament’s own ban on token use at the venue.
Not every publisher is testing that water. The XSE Pro League’s Counter-Strike 2 event in Guangzhou wrapped its $1 million tournament this month with zero blockchain sponsors of its own. Traditional brands are the ones landing marquee placements instead. Hisense’s RGB MiniLED sponsorship at the FIFA World Cup is the kind of deal crypto exchanges are still chasing at major gaming and sports events alike.
Who Is Paying for the Pacific Broadcast?
Traditional brands still cover nearly all of it. VCT Pacific Stage 2 draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands per broadcast, and companies like Intel, Acer Predator and Yakult have underwritten past seasons. Coinbase remains the only crypto name anywhere near VALORANT esports, and even that deal stops at the regional border.
VCT Pacific Stage 2 in 2025 ran on seven sponsors in total: Intel, Acer Predator, ZOWIE, SHARP, Pulsar, NTT e-Sports and Yakult. Not one of them touches crypto.
| Crypto Company | Where It Shows Up | What It Is Allowed To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | VALORANT and League of Legends global events (Masters, Champions) | Broadcast segments and cosmetic giveaways, no wallets or NFTs |
| Coinbase and Bitget | Esports World Cup 2026, Paris | Prediction markets and jersey branding, no on-site activations |
| Chiliz (CHZ) | Traditional football clubs expanding into esports | Fan token platform, volume spikes fade fast after majors |
| TH token | Team Heretics only, not sanctioned by any tournament | Merchandise access and fan perks for one organization |
VCT Pacific Stage 2 in 2025 pulled a peak audience of 426,922 viewers on grand final day. The figure comes from Esports Charts’ tournament tracking dashboard.
- 426,922 peak viewers watched the Pacific Stage 2 grand final on August 31, 2025.
- 17.5 million hours watched across the full event.
- 155,947 average viewers over 113 hours of total airtime.
That audience is exactly why traditional brands keep renewing. EA’s own pitch to advertisers claims 120 million players across its in-game ad network, a reminder that gaming’s ad budgets increasingly flow through platforms built for Fortune 500 spending, not token treasuries. Crypto firms remain free to bid for that inventory. None have shown up on a VCT Pacific broadcast yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does VCT Pacific Stage 2 end and what comes next?
VCT Pacific Stage 2 runs through September 6, 2026, with Playoffs held in Busan. The top two finishers move straight to VALORANT Champions 2026 in Shanghai, which runs September 24 through October 18 with a $2.25 million prize pool, more than nine times Stage 2’s purse.
Does Riot Games have any cryptocurrency sponsors in Valorant esports?
Yes, one. Coinbase has been VALORANT and League of Legends esports’ exclusive blockchain and cryptocurrency exchange partner since 2025, covering global events like Masters and Champions with segments such as an Econ Report breaking down in-game economies. Riot has said there are no plans to add wallets, NFTs or token rewards to actual gameplay, and the deal has never extended to a Pacific regional broadcast.
Why did the Stage 2 qualification format change this year?
Riot scrapped its old Ascension events for 2026 and gave Challengers teams a direct route into Stage 2 Play-Ins instead. The four non-franchised slots go to the Pacific Last Chance Qualifier champion plus the top finishers from the SEA, South Asia and Oceania circuits, a wider funnel than the region has used before.
Are esports fan tokens still worth anything to holders?
Not much, based on recent trading. Fan tokens tied to esports organizations stayed flat through this year’s high profile qualifier matches, and analysts covering the sector note that trading spikes around major tournaments tend to be modest and fade quickly without an actual product launch behind them.
Which VCT Pacific teams are drawing the most attention in Stage 2?
Paper Rex enters as the team to beat after already clinching a Champions berth through Championship Points. Gen.G, meanwhile, parted ways with player Lakia for a second time this season, a roster change Plat Chat’s power rankings flagged as one of the region’s more surprising storylines heading into Stage 2.
